Superb museum located inside famous 1920s Amsterdam School-designed social housing block. Excellent, though not huge, display space details history of Amsterdam School as movement in interwar Dutch art and architecture and design, as well as temporary exhibitions, with many authentic, original items on view. 45-minute tours of building in the afternoons on the hour, including one at 3:00 PM in English. English tour led by Bjorn was especially good and informative, even for me, a historian of modern architecture at the Univ of Edinburgh. Staff are very friendly and courteous. Highly recommended, esp for architecture or modern art enthusiasts!

Beautiful building of the “Amsterdam School” of architecture. Take the guided tour, it is very worthwhile and gives a good overview not only of the architecture, but also the social context of moving from slums to social housing. The Amsterdam school is a sister movement to Art Nouveau, and influenced not only architecture but also art and furniture.

Built by the people for the people! Socialist housing organisation Eigenhaard build this big block of appartments just east of Amsterdam Central Station, in the old harbour district know as Spaarndammerbuurt. The museum offers a guided tour in Dutch and English which teaches you about the origins of a lot of details about the building. The tour takes you through the integrated Post office and finishes inside one of the many tiny apartments.Want to see what Dutch social housing was like, start in 1900, start here!

Public housing block from the 1920s with great architectural details. Surrounded by a whole quarter of housing projects from the same Era, this one stands out due to the surprising construction details. If you take the guided tour, be prepared to do it again but with another guide, as they all have their own focus on specific parts of the history of the building.Recently restored with better matching stonework.

Het Schip is a gorgeous architecture museum about the Amsterdam School in Amsterdam West - it is actually located inside a prime example of the Amsterdam School, the social housing block called The Ship (Het Ship). Built by architect Michel de Klerk in 1919 of signature red brick. The museum has a great hourly inside and outside guided tour, a museum floor you can also self guide on very well, and a nice museum cafe for coffee or lunch time dishes. Very friendly volunteers run the show here. Paid for parking is possible on the curbside essentially during museum hours.

This is the best place to go to read up on the typically Dutch variant of Art Deco, the Amsterdamse School. Offers informative tours that give you an insight on not just the architecture from one of the culturally richest period in history, but also on the social movement that occampanied it. Including the way people lived and decorated the interior.

Nice museum, not very known, about the life conditions of the workers in Amsterdam in the beginning of the 20th century. The building itself is quite unique and special, and is worth a visit, due to the curvy shapes and the mix of functional and decorative elements. They also have some explanations and guides tours starting every hour, about how workers lived before the Amsterdam Municipality started supporting this kind of social housing.By the end of the tour you can also see some examples of Urban furniture designed by the architects of the Amsterdam School. This architects conceived the building as part of the neighborhood, and designed also the urban spaces surrounding the buildings, and as result of this interest came some of this postboxes, electric closets, or signs.

The best museums are those that manage to turn a dry subject into something fascinating and leave you with a different perspective on the world. Im a recent transplant to Amsterdam, currently living in the South of Amsterdam, and I would describe my interest in architecture as passing. My girlfriend, though, is much more interested, so we checked out this museum.I think what I most liked about this place is that they assumed almost no foreknowledge of Amsterdam School Architecture at all, and really drew a clear line between the history of the city, to the moment in time that precipitated the movent, to the particulars of the style. This wasnt just about describing the shape of the columns or the placement of flying buttresses or things like that; I rather, it was all about understanding WHY the architects made the decisions they did, why they choose the materials they did, etc. No longer was architecture just a peculiar way of building, it was a clear expression of a political and economic movement, properly framed in a context I could understand. After leaving, I started to notice things about the buildings in my neighborhood I never saw before, and my morning commute became far more interesting than it had been previously. Hell, now I actually want to learn more about the style and find more buildings exhibiting it, so you could say it changed my perspective. The entrance price of €12.50 includes a guided tour by an enthusiastic and friendly guide, and theres an English language tour available daily at 15:00. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the whole place was very clean and well-maintained. If youre at all interested in modern architecture or early 20th century social movements, you cant miss this gem of a museum in Amsterdam!

A place that you must see. Too rarely visited by tourists. Work of Michel de Klerk, carefully restored between 2015 and 2018. There are some similarities between Gaudis projects and Het Schip. However, Gaudi built buildings and gated estates for manufacturers, church and financiers - Het Schip is a workers palace, designed as housing for ordinary working people. The people united will never be defeated! Long live socialism!
