The Sabarmati ashram is sited between a prison and a crematorium, and Gandhi believed that a satyagrahi has invariably to go to either place. Mohandas Gandhi said, This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for truth and develop fearlessness, for on one side are the iron bolts of the foreigners, and on the other the thunderbolts of Mother Nature.

If you are visiting Ahemdabad, this place must be in your list. You get to know so much about Mahatma Gandhi. Not everything is present in our text books. You can spend time at the bank of Sabarmati River. You can have a real time experience how Mahatma Gandhi would have lived there. Everything was so neat and clean. Best part is that you do not have to pay a single rupee to experience all this.

Simple, beautiful and kept to preserve its essence, the Sabarmati Ashram is worth a visit to take a good long trip into Indias journey for freedom by Gandhi, his wife and all those who joined the movement from time to time. The charkhas of different types were a revelation. I wasnt aware until this trip that there were upgrades in the charkhas models. additionally, the seating area overlooking the Sabarmati is calming, meditative and helps you take a dip into the awakening silence from where big decisions of Indias freedom sprung.

And it has a collection of original letters/docs as well as multiple charkhas promoted by Gandhiji. Also its very peaceful, good energy environment to sit and spend time with your thoughts! Not to mention, the souvenir shop is a must visit. Very creative, beautiful items crafted by orphan kids who live/study in the Ashram. You can buy bags, plant holders, t-shirts, diaries, bookmarks, key-chains etc etc.Pro-tip: Dont miss the original Dandi Bridge which is just a few meters away from the Ashram. Very peaceful and quiet place and extremely well preserved with the unique style of the Ashram as it was during Gandhijis stay pre-independence. Visiting here can give the feeling of time travel into the past to observe the type of lifestyle 100 years ago. Its makes you feel refreshed and drowns that annoying city noise and pollution. Cold breeze from the Sabarmati river definitely adds to this experience. It is here that the first movement of independence was started by Mahatma Gandhi towards Dandi to break the irrational salt pact. Mohandas and Kusturba Gandhi spent a major part of their life in this Ashram. Also there are local heritage historic Khadi shops and artefacts if you want to buy souvenirs. Highly recommended if you are visiting Ahmedabad.A few quotes from M. K. Gandhi:An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.Where there is love there is life.Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans needs, but not every mans greed.Hate the sin, love the sinner. In a gentle way, you can shake the world.Action expresses priorities. If you dont ask, you dont get it.The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service of others. In a gentle way, you can shake the world.

Photo gallary, his residence, Magan Niwas, collection of various Charkhas (spinning wheel) and a soothing stoppage under trees alongside Sabarmati riverfront are major attractions. Do not forget to visit Abhay Ghat; a memorial dedicated to Moraraji Desai which is at walking distance from Ashram.

Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram) is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, adjoining the Ashram Road, on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 4 miles (6.4 km) from the town hall. This was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi who lived at Sabarmati (Gujarat) and Sevagram (Wardha, Maharashtra) when he was not travelling across India or in prison. He lived in Sabarmati or Wardha for a total of twelve years with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and followers, including Vinoba Bhave. The Bhagavad Gita was recited here daily as part of the Ashram schedule. It was from here that Gandhi led the Dandi march also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930.In recognition of the significant influence that this march had on the Indian independence movement, the Indian government has established the ashram as a national monument.Visited this place in summers with family and had an amazing experience over all, one get to know very much about Gandhijis life and the struggle behind the freedom of IndiaThere is a lot of greenery around and one can get peace by sitting here. Thanks for reading ❤️
