The monastery was entirely rebuilt by lord Smbat of the House of Orbelian, a branch of the Liparitids who were expelled to Armenia in the late 12th century from Georgia. Liparitids were themselves a branch of the Mamikonians. Smbat was the ancestor of the Armenian princes of Syunik. A Georgian inscription around the drum attests his name. The monastery has a gavit and various service buildings scattered around the site.
I adore this monastery! It is situated near the river Dzoraget. Its location is perfect! The monastery itself was built in the 7-13th centuries AD.The Georgians may claim that this is a Georgian church. But its not! It has several Georgian inscriptions and Georgian crosses on its walls. One of them is right under the dome, which makes it really unique. And the other is on the Southern wall. These inscriptions tell us about the renovations undergone by the Zakarid rulers. And these rulers were not Georgian.Getting to the monastery is not easy, because the road to it is in terrible condition! I was hitchhiking there and one of the employees of the hydropower plant right next to the church took me there. I also swam in Dzoraget river. And that was an amazing experience!
