The newly established 42-acre (17 ha) zoological gardens was formally opened as the Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens in honor of Queen Victoria.The major attraction at the opening was the white elephant of King Thibaw, the last king of then Burma, whom the British had exiled to India only 20 years earlier.In 1908 the Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens Act was passed giving the establishment a legal recognition.The zoo was vandalized and looted during World War II. In 1951, the then Burmese government changed the name to “Rangoon Zoological Gardens and Parks.” In 1962, the zoo’s area was enlarged to the present size of 69.25 acres (28.02 ha). Yangon Zoo was improved customer service, hygiene, maintenance, and skill of zookeeperafter private company handles it from government. So, I just want to give rating- 4 stars to Yangon Zoo especially good customer service.

Yangon Zoo was better than I expected as far as animal treatment. They have lots of tigers and it was great to feed the elephants! Also, the number of deer they have is impressive. The monkeys are also cute and playful, making them fun to watch!

This zoo is wonderful break away from the bustling city. There are an immense diversity of animals, birds, and reptiles, which are in cages extremely close to the public; it is truly exciting to be so close to tigers and jaguars, for example. The zoo uses many original buildings that are well maintained and over 100 years old. Some facilities seem small, but Im no expert on the matter. The place is very clean. Be sure to use your map, as the zoo is expansive.

Everyone should come and visit here. Its becoming more beautiful and you can have a lots of fun and exciting things in here. Spend your weekends with your family in this garden will give you pleasant times. Bike riding is also fun. Make sure you meet the Stegosaurus inside the garden although I havent met 😁. So Ill go there next time.

In order to fit with the modern-day, Zoo Management should update(renovate) not only the Car Parking area but also the walkway to make it more comfortable to all of the visitors. And I hope to see them in more smart places for all kinds of zoo animals.

Pioneers, Pet & Animal in Myanmar is very cute and can be found here in many wildlife.Elephant Mo Mo is the oldest in the garden and She is very clever.

Its a small zoo within the city, with a variety of animals to see. Most of the animals are not looking well, except for the elephants who seemed to enjoy the small pieces of pre-cut sugar cane stems which can be purchased for 1,000 MMK (for 5 small pieces). The place lacks maintenance although you can see some people cleaning up some areas or watering the plants. Still, it looks a bit unclean.

It is not expensive to get in but there is a separate price for tourists (around £1). Animal cruelty is rife here. The elephants were so distressed and the cages are too small. It was interesting seeing the animals but at what extent? Some of the animals were difficult to watch as they were clearly upset. Particularly the elephants and the big cats. They were all visibly frustrated and distressed. The cats were trying to get into each others cages to fight each other. It was sad.You can feed the hippos and the elephants and there are a few animal shows. The gardens are beautiful and the kids playground area is pretty good too. There are some awesome wooden models of dragons and other creatures that were really impressive.it isnt a hugely busy place so its relaxing to walk around and there are no crowds.

A historical place to visit in Yangon. It is a nice place to hangout with friends, family, kids, classmates and colleagues sometimes. We can learn many things from this place including wild animals, many types of snakes, tigers, lions, different kinds of monkeys, various types of birds, lovely elephants.Basically it is quite crowded on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. If you have enough free time to spend your day, you should go on weekdays and non-public holidays.There are many big, aging trees which make the whole Zoological Garden cooler. Some of the families spend their days below the trees because kids are also able to play on the ground freely.There are restaurants and food stalls in the garden. However some may be expensive and you may also concern with some street foods. One of the best way is to cook at home the night before you are visiting to the garden.Have you visited to Yangon Zoological Garden now and before? How was your experience? Good to spend time with children at weekend, wide car parking

It was a great experience walking around and watching the animals. It was my first visit to a zoo so I did enjoy it a lot, but it was also heart-breaking to see the situation of some animals. The water they were staying in was super dirty, they were not adequately fed. But its a huge area with lots of different animals.

Good place to relax and spend time with family and friends. But it need a good maintenance and cleanliness.

I enjoy a lot in Yangon Zoo. The place was nice, good size, cheap and not too many people, like other Zoos in Asia. Animals was social and came close to people, many of them.

Currently only accepting private tour of the zoo to ensure maximum social distancing with all the hand washing stations admit pandemic so you could help support the zoo feed adorable animals that are living there. Very educational for the children. Majestic tigers, local elephants and their behaviors, nearly endangered Myanmar star tortoises and local reptiles are a few of the highlights.

Plenty of animals, cage bars were mostly tight so it was really difficult to try to get good pictures. Happened to be there to see tigers getting fed, which was a new experience for me. Entrance cost was very cheap, 2000 kyat if I can recall.

Need more cleaning, the air of environmental have bad smell near some animals. Good for families and children.

The Yangon Zoo. Once a popular place in SE Asia, but due to low maintenance and damaged facilities, now a day even danger for younger kids. A lot of area need a upgrade. With the flow of Income, that’s easy to cover the expense and cost of renovations.

Usually I feel guilty visiting zoos, however we decided to visit whilst wandering around Yangon. I really wish we hadn’t.I found it incredibly depressing and left feeling utterly heartbroken. The animals are living in awful conditions and it is so sad to see. The majority of enclosures are far too small, dirty / damp and dark and don’t offer anything to the animals in form of entertainment or stimulation. Animals were pacing back and forth in their cages as they had nothing else to do and no space to run around / fly. We were especially saddened to witness the utterly heartbreaking cry from one of the tigers who was limping around his cage in pain. Asian elephants were chained so they weren’t even able to take a step. The red panda enclosure was next to a child’s play area where they had loud music playing. There was also a lot of litter, some of which was inside the enclosures and being played with by the animals.It is sad to see animals caged for our enjoyment, especially in such deplorable conditions. It is a shame as the zoo has a lot of space and offers beautiful gardens, yet very little of that is dedicated to the animals themselves.Avoid this place unless you want to leave feeling heartbroken for the animals and completely disappointed that you have contributed to it.

U can borrow bicycles to look around. Animals are so adorable💚 U can feed them too.. There are many benches to rest. Food stans are also there. Entrance fees are not expensive. Animals are parts of the nature💚🌞🌞 Ahh.. U cant find Giraffe there😪 and male lion too☹

A nice place to visit for kids. If you are a foreigner, you should visit there. It cost around 2 USD for each and 1 USD for car parking. Although theres a few animals, but still a nice place to visit. Btw if you can wake the snakes and crocodiles up, you will win lottery.

It is over 100 years old ancient Zoological garden. Nice to visit with family. Especially, kids are always love to go there.

It is a vast area with various kinds of animals from birds to elephants. Sometimes, there are entertainments there just like magic show or circus. The entrance fee is 1000 mmk for one local people. There are also small restaurants and shops inside the zoo. We can take YBS 28, 36, 87, 29, 12, 61 etc and get off at Kyauk Tine bus stop to get to the zoo. You can rent bike, mini cars, small boats there. It is more lively at weekends.

It has a lot my childhood memories and although numbers of display have been in decline, I still love the place.

Contrary to other reviews, most animals here are kept in terrible conditions. Please do not support such cruelty! If you love animals you would not want to see elephants in painful chains (reaching for food due to starvation), bears with clipped nails and infected wounds (from attacks or mistreatment), monkeys rocking back and fourth as a result of psychological harm and enclosures which generally are filthy and/or have no natural habitat (trees/leaves/grass) whatsoever. A few animals are amongst the lucky ones, but most are in a living hell!

Nice place to visit with friends or family, One of the biggest and oldest Zoological garden more than 100 year in Myanmar. Located near Kantawgyi lake and near Shwe dagon pagoda. You can feel pleasure when you saw your kid enjoy with animals.

Very sad place, one that exemplifies the hardships not only imposed on animals but also on the Burmese people who suffered through a misfortunate series of regimes. One can see the remnants of the colonial interests in exhibiting exotic animals as well as the newer but equally disturbing animal cages set up through the last four decades. The animals appear completely depressed, some absolutely emaciated and others Ill or injured. The White Rhinos had puncture wounds on their backs that were bleeding. The Nile Crocodile lay in a small muddy pool of water that was half a meter deep and not even long enough to fit its own length.The visitors were largely Burmese who also understood that this was not a place of happiness but one of circumstance.Times are changing: It would be encouraging to see some improved international efforts to rehabilate the country, this zoo is an example of that need.

I love this place.

I wanted to take phots at the zoo and went there.Although I am happy to go zoo in my childhood, I dont really like their management.Animals are kept in dirty places, air is not good to breathe, hippos are kept in unclean water.Im really sorry to see them.If you are a foreigner, I would not say you to visit zoos in Myanmar.There is not very much animals and atmosphere is not so nice if you are an animal lover.I hope there will be a lot of improvement with zoos with the help of public in the future.Thanks.5 stars reviews are kept in the top.So i will give it 5 star and want you to see my opinion.

A nice, green, shady and clean area with a very affordable entrance fee. Decent selection of animal species. Unfortunately, the cages and exhibits are too small. I dont really know how to objectively rate this place as Im not a big zoo fan and we got there by mistake. :) :) :)

The elephants are perpetually hungry, so feeding them is one of the pastimes here. This zoo is a simple way to pass your time in Yangon if you have nothing to do.

Animal shows are a bit of a turn off for me. Living conditions for the animals are quite poor but the best selection of animals is quite impressive. The zoo is over 100 years old which is fascinating. However, a renovation is required.

Good for children because this place is the only place in Yangon for them to see animals. Foreigners also should come and see the different species of animals from their countries. The main entrance is blocked by the taxis and food stalls.

Oldest and Largest zoo near Kandawgyi lake in Yangon.

Still a good place for children. You can see birds mostly. Lions, monkeys, elephants, giraffe, deer, snakes, chrocodiles, fishes, hippopotamus, Bear. The eldest elephant, Momo, 70years old is still there. Public holidays, there is an animal show which makes both children and adults happy.

So cool take some fruits and vegetables with you there u can feed animals

Nice and interesting place to have fun with your kids. Animals are usually put in cages and you can get the smell of their excretions easily. Although it is an old zoo, you can experience more than 100 different kind of animals there. Usually crowded at weekends.

Great to see local animals like bears hornbill birds elephants crocodiles monkeys rare white rhinoceros etc. Popular with locals. Green and lush but a bit run down.

Stressed animals in poor conditions and only £1 to enter. Dirty water for the hippos and crocs, crammed cages for others and the elephants are swaying from left to right stressed to they eyeballs ! A felt sorry for these animals, they are in an animal jail but they have don’t nothing wrong. But what can I do about it?

One of the landmark historical place in Yangon. Its situated near the heart of the town, not so far with Myanmar landmark Shewdagon Pagoda and beside is world heritage lake Kandawgyi. Most of the Yangoner enjoy their holiday with family to YZG. There is so many events, shows and Restaurant there. It has 2 entrances , one from Kan Pat Lan and another at Daw Thein Tin rd.
