This is a very beautiful & interesting place to visit. The grounds are vast & well kept. The rose gardens are especially beautiful. We even met Jock, the estate cat, who accompanied us around quite a bit of the gardens! Hes very cute & friendly. The restaurant/cafe was also very nice, especially when it rained! The tea & cakes on offer were delicious! We spent a very pleasant afternoon here.
The house was full of amazing history. Churchill truly loved a portrait of himself. His uniforms were particularly interesting with the photographs to show him using them. The staff were lovely as always. The formal gardens are nice for a pleasant stroll and the woodland beyond the lake made a refreshingly cool place to have lunch with lovely views at points. It was too warm to walk to the top and go to the playground but from previous visits it is worth a visit.
Amazing place full of history and spirit if Churchills family. House is worth a thoughtful visit, most of rooms, furniture are the same as they were when Churchill lived there. Nice garden, swimming pond designed by Sir Winston, studio with his paintings. Good walk around in the woods where Canadian soldiers base was located
Very spacious garden area and excellent view of the surrounding fields and woodlands. The house is still impressive since I was last here a number of years ago. Forgotten how many times Ive visited Chartwell, but at no fewer than twice. I wasnt too bothered by the rain as it was on and off throughout the day.
We spent a very relaxing afternoon here recently. All the staff and volunteers are very helpful and well informed. It was great to be able to see inside this beautiful house once again. The gardens are looking amazing, such beautiful colour combinations. We had tea and cake...the Victoria sandwich one was gorgeous and brought a little plant from the lovely lady in the shop. It was as my Mum would say A grand day out Thank you National Trust!
Obviously of great interest to anyone with an interest in Churchill, exhibits do cover more well known aspects. However this property sheds light on more personal details of the man. I found the allotment and his other hobby areas particularly fascinating. The grounds are also lovely and delightful to sit in and pass the day
Great day out. We come here 3/4 times a year and never get tired of the experience in walking the same grounds that Sir Winston Churchill walked and to spend time in his magnificent home. Also going to his studio and looking at his wonderful paintings that he completed in different countries. There are also certain spots around the grounds where he sat and painted the scenes, the Trust have placed a seats on the spot. You also can imagine Sir Winston swimming in his knitted costume in the swimming pool, this is situated on the left just before you get to the main gardens, you may think that it is a small lake or a very large pond. There are extensive walks if you are fit around the lakes, or just stroll around the gardens that were treasured by wife Clementine. At the end of your visit have a snack in the restaurant or if the weather is kind outside on the veranda. There also is a very nice gift shop where you can also purchase some of the plants you may have spotted.Have a wonderful day.
This was a lovely place to visit and a great day out. I glad I came here because theres lots to see and great history . Also is great place to walk your dog . Also it was lovely to walk around the gardens and the house also studio . I specially love the studio. I would recommend this place to anyone who love history and who just loves gardens . I would probably go back there . Check out the photos.
Excellent day out, very friendly and helpful staff. Grounds spectacular and plenty of walks. House visit interesting and factual we will return again soon just walk the grounds and set routes.
Nice place, entirely devoted to Churchill. Knowledgeable stewards. With high traffic it is a visit to learn about him rather than to enjoy the gardens. Only one picnic table, by the childrens play area - nowhere for a senior citizen to eat lunch except the restaurant. And nowhere to sit down on the climb back up from the play area to the buildings - a few benches would be nice. There are some on the lawn in front of the house.
Absolutely loved Churchills former home. His studio was definitely a highlight with some stunning artwork. Beautiful grounds perfect for a lovely walk or a picnic. A must visit!
Amazing house and gardens, just beautiful and dripping with history. The woodland walk got the heart pumping. Bring wellies if its been wet, like it has this summer.
A very enjoyable visit. Take time to walk at leisure. The house is well worth a visit. The Guides are friendly and knowledgeable, with one going out of his way to find out for me if Daphne du Maurier had ever been a guest! Would highly recommend, and will plan another visit soon.
Delightfully personal to Churchill, lots of items relating to his political and private life. Many interesting paintings, gifts from Stalin etc, the tiny cottage built for his children, the studio where he painted. The walk from the visitors centre takes you through gorgeous gardens to the house. Lovely but might be a bit long for those with mobility difficulties. Cafe.
Beautiful house, and gardens. You could easily spend all day here.
What a lovely place. A real home. Very classy and not ostentatiously furnished.
Best place to visit. Great restaurants. Great history. You wont be disappointed.
Lovely gardens and woodland walk. Especially enjoyed the walled garden. The house was fully booked on this occasion due to restrictions but we still enjoyed our day.
Beautiful historical place to visit with family on sunny summer day ! If you interested about Winston Churchill definitely recommend to visit ! His work shop with over 300 paintings on display very impressive! Nice fields and gardens around. Unfortunately bedrooms was closed this time ... But we will come back sure ! Staff was so friendly, helpful and full of hidden stories of Churchill. Amazing library display also inside the house.
A very popular NT venue, visit and you will see why, highly recommended
Fabulous day out. Our favourite National Trust property. Very friendly knowledgeable staff. Beautifully kept gardens. Lunch in the cafe was excellent quality. We will definitely come back again.
A great visit to the great mans retreat plenty to see, lovely gardens, very tranquil, the rose walkway is splendid.A very homely house no wonder Churchill loved the place.
A relaxed afternoon in beautiful gardens. The house was amazing full of history and the guides were well informed and enthused. Highly recommended
Loved it! Had the Friday off work to make an extra long Bank Holiday weekend. Car Park was relatively full but still spaces available. Take coins for parking, not yet contactless. Social Distancing throughout but masks only needed in public areas. Good accessibility paths and very good signposting everywhere. The gardens are beautiful and well worth the visit. We plan to visit the House next time. Cafeteria with limited choices but sufficient for all. Shop also there. A great day out!
Loved it. Would want to visit again and again. Lovely house and amazing garden
Beautiful house, gardens and setting. Really loved the grounds. Great woodland area for kids and fabulous flower borders for gardeners. Hope the plants I bought survive in my garden
Fascinating place to visit on many levels. Its easy to see why Churchill loved it.
Im not particularly one for houses but love the gardens and scenery and free parking and membership was more for the family. That said visit today was very enjoyable. Lovely house, informative staff and the personal items in the house very interesting. Unfortunately the studio was closed but plenty of paintings in the house and no sign of the ginger cat (forget his name. Id be surprised if he was allowed in the house. Great visit and would recommend.
A beautiful house with spectacular gardens. Really informative insight into Churchills life.
Lovely gardens, beautiful lake, great place for walking. Good cafe and second hand books for sale.
Fantastic place to visit got there at 1130 and left at 530 - beautiful place and well organised
Beautiful place to visit. Would highly recommend anyone to see for themselves
Chartwell is so beautiful. The garden is my favourite. They have ramps too, so if youre a wheelchair user or buggy user like myself, it makes it a lot easier and accessible to get to the garden 😊All the NT places are stunning! And, all the staffs are lovely and helpful ❤
Steep admission price (20GBP) but worth it as Churchills countryside residence is well maintained and contains a lot of cool memorabilia.
A fantastic day trip inside and out. Easy to see why Winston loved it so...
A beautiful historical site. A national heritage gem, we had a wonderful day
Fabulous house and gardens. Steeped in Churchill history. Restaurant was a bit school meals and not very inviting. Well worth the visit.
Beautiful house set in amazing grounds/gardens. Will definitely return.
Its a fantastic place to explore, please your eyes and your mind. Usually the entrance fee is higher but as the Churchill House is closed they are offering it at much lower price as £10 per adult. Dont forget to spot black swan, Chicken and fish. Also there is a bird feeding area visible next to the entrance, where you may find rare birds to click a snap. Its a calming place just to sit down on the grass and enjoy the scenic beauty of the calm water, ducks, fish or the maple or willo tree. Also you can sit on top garden area to see a vast landscape of far away hills. You can swing, go to apple orchard. This place is highly recommended for a family picnic time, could be with couples or kids. Hope you will have a nice time there 😊
What an amazing place, and what an amazing man, very helpful and friendly staff highly recommend a visit.
Lovely gardens and interesting house. Nice food in cafe.
Lovely place to go with family and friends. Although, the house is not open yet there is plenty to do. Would recommend this place to anyone. Lots of flowers out and geese with babies.
A great day out for the family. Staff here are very knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds have a lot of space to have a picnic. There is a few play areas available however this could be hard going for some with motability difficulties.
Lovely gardens and very interesting home of Winston Churchill with very helpful, cheerful and knowledgeable staff, will definitely come again!!
Fantastic place, only let down by staff shortages in cafe and paper cups etc.
Been here several times. Most of them on circular walk from emmets garden. Chartwell is a great place to visit all year round as the gardens are always changing. Staff are brilliant and always talk and share there knowledge. Will be good when we allowed back into house.
A charming historical reminiscence at Chartwell the home of the most important person in the British post war era.The house maintains a modern theme and is full of memory characterised by amazing paintings and memorablia. It is hard to believe that Winston Churchill may have been a more gifted painter than politician. The grounds are sensational.Visit often and enjoy Chartwell and the Churchills.
Its a gorgeous house on an enormous estate. The walk to the tree house and around was exciting.
I do probably say this about every National Trust property we visit, but this one is definitely my favourite so far! Despite not being able to go into the house at the moment, the gardens and grounds are absolutely wonderful, and there is lots to keep children interested too.
Excellent day out to learn about Winston Churchill. The grounds and gardens are also a delight. Highly recommend.
Very interesting and well worth a visit. Such helpful volunteers who helped my husband who has mobility problems, to enjoy the visit
A very beautiful and serene place. The grounds are well looked after and the house is not only light and airy but filled with all the history of a great man.
Such a beautiful quiet and calm place to be.
Brilliant day out with lovely surroundings and the house is brilliant
Beautiful place. Churchill loved the place which is no surprise; but it is quite vast. Again, a victim of it’s own success although I managed to find a parking space. The tour must be booked but it’s worth it. Surprisingly small library for a man who wrote such tomes. No mention of the portrait Lady C. hated and burned on a bonfire! Huge acreage to wander through. Beware the black swans. Cafe is very good: also large. Photography permitted. Highly recommended.
Stunning! I don’t think there are words that can describe the house and grounds.
One of the best places you can visit in Kent. It is the place where Winston Churchill lived, a magnificent piece of history with picturesque views and excellent facilities, where every member of the family can enjoy a memorable day out. Also a piece of our important history, here you can see some of Churchill’s war plans, which had a big contribution to the success of the D-Day.
Very interesting from an historical point of view (and motivating too!). Wonder what Churchill would make of the world we live in today? Beautiful grounds too.
Lovely place and very helpful staff. Only frustration was not seeing all of the house. The grounds are lovely with lots to keep kids occupied
Great place for a lovely day out. Picnics, walks, or just laze out in the sun, lovely views. Amazing history- if only the walls could talk! Perfect family day out. National trust is Simply amazing. Lots of parking. Great cafe and trust shop.
Beautiful property with knowledgeable stuff if you love history and historic buildings it is a must
Lovely place to visit. I took my mother in her wheelchair which limited the areas we could visit. The paths are pretty steep and some parts inexcessable. We still enjoyed ourselves, the walled gardens by the studio are well worth the effort with the wheelchair. The cafe has some lovely scones and cakes.
Apart from the house, there are acres of garden/ woodland/ meadows to walk round. There was a bit of a queue to go inside Churchills art studio but no queue for the Wendy House.
A very interesting place to visit, nice gardens and pleasant walks
Great place and a great time the staff were great with the grandkids.
Fantastic place to visit even it is pouring with rain
Great visit, plenty to see, very interesting.
Beautiful peaceful setting. Very educational. Staff welcoming
Lovely place to go and great for walking around
Beautiful views. Very interesting house and the paintings done by Churchill well worth a look. Super helpful staff. Only lost one star because the toilets were not in good order and the cafe menu limited to 3 lunch options.Be aware the whole site is sloped so not easy for those with less mobility.
An outstanding site in every way. The volunteers in the house itself give, not only their knowledge and experience - despite the NTs despicable efforts to impose compulsory training and unconscious bias sessions on staff infinitely more experienced than the snowflakes running the show - and provide a welcoming presence. The gardens and beautiful surroundings are well maintained and a credit to the gardenersand groundsmen.Highly recommended.
I just love this place and probably feel at home here just as much as Winston Churchill did
Such a beautiful property with stunning views at every corner and plenty of seating placed to enjoy them. Well thought out one way system in response to Covid and bright happy staff. Only thing missing was an ice cream cart at the end 😂
A truly memorable place to visit! Winston Churchills residence. My partner and I spent almost five hours here, visiting the fabulous house, beautiful gardens and interesting woods attached to the vast estate.
I live locally to this iconic location and visit frequently. The gardens and house are always a delight to roam around. Having just acquired a Springer spaniel I am now exploring the wider walks around the woods. Always worth a visit.
Chartwell is an enjoyable afternoon out. They have a good cafe with a tasty selection of food. Be aware that there are very few seats when you enter the gardens. There is a dip and a steep climb up to the house so not suitable for those who need level ground, we were unaware that there seems to be transportation from the cafe to the house for those who need it so my father had to stop half way and wait under a tree. Beautiful grounds. The house was smaller than I expected, but worth visiting.
Wonderful day out. A place full of history with gardens and nice walks. The volunteers in Chartwell House are so helpful with stories of Winston and his wife Clementine they made the tour so worthwhile. Wandering around the grounds was so relaxing. Highly recommend. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
Lovely property. Plenty of parking to start your visit of right! Maps given to help navigate extensive gardens. Play areas for kids. Timed slots given for house to prevent overcrowding. Lots of room in the cafeteria/restaurant
Beautiful house and grounds.Poor offering for food in the restaurant.I have been to many other trust properties in the past few weeks and most have had much better food offerings.Barely any vegan options here.Other trusts offer vegan pasties, paninis to sausage rolls. Nothing here tho.Wish there was a bit more consistently with the food. Will bring my own food next time which is a shame as I want to support the trust.
Nice to go lovely afternoon out. Very expensive to visit house. Shop not worth visiting.
Interesting house, not too big. Lovely gardens. All helped by late summer sunshine.A must for anyone interested in Churchill and a firm favourite with visitors from abroad.
Very picturesque and great views. Nice cafe too. If your a wheelchairs user, its not ideal. There is a path to follow but unfortunately you will be limited and you will be restricted. The house is the same. No lift to get upstairs. So all you will see are a few rooms downstairs. There is one IPad to view the upstairs , but you may have to wait. No discount either even though you can only view half of it. Give the house a miss i would say.
Loved the cat. Jock the VII
Fantastic place, house not open until October, but grounds are looking stunning still! Good social distancing and cafe still doing a great scone and cream tea! Weather was great so it was a wonderful day out!
We had grandchildren with us, so didnt go into the house. However the grounds including the woodland had plenty of space and interest to occupy them, even let the dog off the lead for a while in the woods. And the cafe was one of National Trusts good ones. A good day out with young children, albeit sometimes challenging with a buggy
Even in autumn, it is a wonderful space to stroll around. Beautiful vistas across the Weald of Kent, autumnal colours of leaves, on a bright, clear day one can see the South Downs in the distance. A relaxing space to enjoy.
Pleasant walk around Chartwell with lots of information points scattered around. Plenty of grounds to walk about in without too many people about.House and studio were open but only later in day on an additional ticket so couldn’t hang around for that.Nice pumpkin displays around the site for photo opportunity’s at this time.
Parked in the car park at Chartwell House and did an 8k walk around the grounds and surrounding area. Beautiful! Unfortunately the house is closed at the moment due to covid restrictions.
What an amazing place! Full of history, some wonderful gardens and fascinating woodland walks with activities to keep the children occupied. Ice creams were delicious but a bit pricey. Had a great day out.
Well worth a visit. You get a great sense of the historical events surrounding Winstons time in this lovely home and gardens. Well presented by the National Trust
Fantastic location and grounds and lovely house. Brought to life by the guides who without prompting informed you of ghd history.
Winston Churchills house is well preserved and maintained by the National Trust. Inside the house, you can walk through the rooms Churchill would have lived in, including his study. Some of the upper rooms have been converted into displays of his uniforms and medals which was interesting to see. The gardens are extensive with a beautiful rose garden and very peaceful lakes. Sadly, it was rainy at the time of our visit so we didnt benefit from the butterfly plant borders. You can also visit Churchills art studio and view many of his paintings. The facilities are good with a large cafe with outdoor seating, a shop, a book shop and toilets. There also appears to be a lot for children with several playgrounds within the larger grounds. It is possible to take long walks within the grounds too.
Very friendly staff. Great place to work visit. Very interesting. I just begrudge having to pay car parking fees on top of the entrance fee. Its not like there is any place else to park in the area. Given that wed had to drive a long way (no easy public transport alternative), it was awful to have to find the extra cash (neither of us is on a regular income and hadnt been out together for over a year & half due to health concerns).
Lovely place to visit. I am having trouble walking at the moment but staff could not have been more helpful about ensuring I got to the house and back again later using the minibus. House and gardens beautiful. Churchill history displays very interesting.
So nice to be back, very impressed with the new (to us) forest-based play areas, children loved them. Lovely tour of the house with helpful and informative staff as ever. Restaurant well organized in terms of social distancing as was the shop.
Very pleasant woodlands for walking, very interesting Churchill history, cafe Ok as was the shop, all in all a nice day trip.
