An architectural marvel present in the heart of the city.Came for medical purpose, but came across this temple. Its a serene beauty. Quiet, clean, the design, the detailing, the gardens in the temple compound, all these things are simple marvelous. Dedicated to Lord Shiva. No entry fees, only parking charges are applicable.Need atleast one security personnel in the temple campus to make sure no one is destroying the architecture just for the sake of taking photo. What a place! Immensely happy visiting it.

This temple is inside the Vellore fort, which is surrounded by water will take you the olden Raja Rani days. You can walk around the fort walls, due to covid19, it is closed. There is a Mandapam at the entrance, which has pillars with nice sculptures, very good place for photography. Here you will get the experience of king & queen if you would come with similar costumes. Jalakandeswarar Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva which is located in the Vellore Fort, in heart of the Vellore city, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.Shiva is worshiped as Jalakandeswarar here.Greatness Of Temple:The temple is built at the center of a tank. There is a beautiful water fencing (Agazhi)around the temple appearing as a garland. The circumference of this Agazhi is 8000 feet. The sculpture in the wedding hall o fthe temple has two faces in a single body, an elephant and the bull.Water for the abishek of the Lord is drawn from well which isvery old. This is the Ganga Gouri holy theertham. The well hasa natural spring in itself and not dug.The Revolving Lamp:There is an earthern lamp on the Balipeeta behind the AdhikaraNandhi (the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva) which would revolve if some people place their hands on it as they wish it. But it doesn’t revolve in all the cases and till today nobody knows the reason. Those facing some troubles caused by lizards falling on them worship the Golden and Silver Lizards in the temple. On the Kanu Festival or Mattu Pongal day (January), special abisheks are performed to Adhikara Nandhi. The wedding hallor the Kalyana Mandapam of the temple is as beautiful as the1000 pillared Mandap in Madurai Meenakshi sundareswarar temple.Navashakti Jyothi:A torch called Navasakthi Jyothi is in front of the Goddess –Amman shrine. It never extinguishes and round in shape. The main flame (jyothi) is at the center and eight around it. A great lamp above the jyothi has a diameter of 27 inches representing the 27 stars starting from Ashwini to Revathi. This is called Star Deepa – Nakshatra Deepa.Temple History:There was an ant-hill (a sand mount made by white ants having many holes housing snakes inside called Pampu puttru in Tamil) in the place where the sanctum sanctorum ofJalakandeswarar exists now. Rain waters in the lower levels of the anthill made a tank there. There was also a Shivalinga under the water of the tank. Lord Shiva appeared in the dream of a chieftain Bommi Reddy who was ruling the region and asked him to build a temple there. The king went to the tank, demolished the ant-hill and took out the Shivalinga and installed the Lord in the water itself. As the Lord was installed in a place surrounded by Jalam (Water), He is named Jalakhandeswarar.

ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதுவதற்கு மன்னிக்கவும்.We left koorathuazhwan temple and drove towards vellore to see this temple and the vellore fort. En route we had our lunch in Ranipet.Like the other temples on our visit today, even this temple and the fort was there in our list of must see places / temples. As we approached the fort, was so excited that we were able to visit this place finally. As we drove inside the fort area, the first disappointment was there was no signage or board to tell, where to park the car. Such an historical / beautiful and most visited place without a signage was kind of sad. Finally did find out that car park is available and it is inside the fort, and not outside as u can see many cars parked. The fees for car parking is 30 rs.The second disappointment was when the parking attendant told us that the fort museum was closed today since it was a friday. But as we parked the car and got down, we were totally mesmerized by the wonderful beautiful rajagopuram of the temple. As we waited for the temple to open ( opening time in afternoon is 3.00 p.m) we took pictures of the raja gopuram from different angles. As the temple doors opened and as we went inside, we were literally stunned / astonished because it was so so so neat and clean. We knew before that the fort was under ASI control, hence the temple also has to be in ASI control.Generally ASI controlled hindu monuments are not maintained that properly, since they have this age old restrictions imposed on people who visit. But this temple, was so so clean, neat and the temple was alive, with priests doing pooja in every sannadhi. That was so shocking and stunning.Felt goosebumps on my hand, since i felt the lord was surprising us in each of the temple that we visited so far today.Came to know that though the temple is under ASI control, but a trust made up of 21 important / powerful / rich people of the area was made to run and oversee the day to day affairs of the temple. This is the first time, i am seeing an ASI controlled temple in such a grandeur fashion, full marks to the TRUST that runs this temple.Lord and Ambal face east, Ambal sannadhi on the left side of the Lord. Kodimaram present, Two beautiful Raja gopurams present and they face south, Temple pond present in the southern direction in the second parikrama. There are 3 praharams ( parikrama) present.Lord name : JalakandeshwararAmbal name: AkhilandeswariBoth the lord and ambal were decorated so beautifully we were totally mesmerised in it. As the priest showed aarathi, we sang our Sivapuranam and Thevaram songs. As we came out of the temple, felt so so happy for visiting such a wonderful and beautiful temple, that too we wanted to visit so long.Would advice to visit the temple with some time at hand, to enjoy the beautiful sculptures and the fine artistic work inside the temple and also in the mandpam outside.Definitely a must visit place in ones life time.

It is a 15th century Lord Shiva temple located inside Vellore fort. The fort is surrounded by water from all sides but you cannot visit the entire fort as it was been overtaken by the Police and been converted into a training center. But you can visit the temple and a museum and can stroll on the fort boundary which is broad and elevated, as it may have been used by the soldiers at that time to guard the fort, hence the surrounding water ridge makes sense. Good place for morning and evening walks and spending some quiet time.

The temple has exquisite carvings on its gopuram (tower), richly carved stone pillars, large wooden gates and stunning monoliths and sculptures. These Vijayanagara sculptures are similar to the ones present in Soundararajaperumal Temple, Thadikombu, Krishnapuram Venkatachalapathy temple, Srivilliputhur Divya Desam and Alagar Koyil.[9] The Gopuram of the tower is over 100 ft. in height. The temple also has a Mandapam, with the hall supported by carved stone pillars of dragons, horses and yalis (lion like creature). The temple itself built in middle of a water tank (called Agazhi in Tamil), and there is water surround the temple like a garland. The temple was so good the art was fine and there is a lake and there are lots of God the temple and the atmosphere was very peaceful there is a garden outside the templeHistoryEditPart of Vijayanagara EmpireEditVellore Fort was built by Chinna Bommi Reddy and Thimma Reddy Nayak, subordinate chieftains under Sadasiva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire in the year of 1566 AD.[2]Vellore Fort gained strategic prominence following the re-establishment of Vijayanagar rule with Chandragiri as their 4th capital after the Talikota battle. The Aravidu Dynasty that held the title of Rayas in 17th century resided in this fort, using it as a base in the battle of Toppur in the 1620s. This major battle took place for the claiming of the Raya title between two factions of the Raya family. Each faction included their respective subordinates: the Nayaks of Tanjore, the Gingee and the Madurai taking sides to suit their interests. The Rayas also had long-running battles with their longtime rivals, the Bijapur Sultans, and with the Nayaks of Madurai and the Gingeeover non-remittance of annual tributes. In the 1640s, during the reign of Sriranga Raya III, the fort was briefly captured by the Bijapur army, but was eventually recaptured with the help of the Nayaks of Tanjore.During Sriranga Rayas reign in 1614, a coup broke out within the royal family and the reigning Emperor Sriranga Raya and his royal family were murdered by the rival factions of the royal family, with the younger son Rama Deva Raya of the emperor smuggled out from the fort by supporting factions of the emperor. These events led to the Battle of Toppur in 1616, one of the largest South Indian wars of the century.[3]In 1639, Francis Day of the East India Company obtained a small strip of land in the Coromandel Coast from the chieftains of the Vellore-Chandragiri regions to do trading, which is in present-day Chennai.Under Bijapur (1656–1678)EditIn the 1650s, Sriranga allied with the Mysoreand Tanjore Nayaks and marched south to attack Gingee and Madurai. His first stop was the capture of Gingee Fort, but Thirumalai Nayak of Madurai responded by requesting the Sultan of Bijapur to attack Vellore from the north to divert Srirangas attention. The Bijapur sultan promptly dispatched a large army and captured Vellore Fort. Subsequently, both the Madurai-Bijapur armies converged on Gingee, defeating the Vellore-Tanjore forces. After a melee, both the forts ended up in the hands of the sultan of Bijapur. The defeat also marked the end of the last direct line of Vijayanagara emperors. Within 20 years after this incident, the Marathas seized the fort from the Bijapur sultans.Under the Marathas (1678–1707)EditFurther information: Sajra and Gojra fortsIn 1676, the Marathas under Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj marched south to the Tanjore country, which had recently been attacked and captured by Chokkanatha Nayak of Madurai. That same year, Ekoji, the brother of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, took control of Tanjore, but was under threat from his immediate neighbours Madurai and Bijapur Sultans, based in Gingee and Vellore respectively. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharajs army first captured the Gingee Fort in 1677, but left the task of attacking Vellore to his assistant and rushed to Deccan as his territories were being attacked by Mughal EmperorAurangazeb. In 1678, after a prolonged fourteen-month siege, the fort passed on to the Marathas. Shivajis representative strengthened the forts fortifications and ruled the area in relative peace.Under the Mughals (1707–1760)EditIn 1707, the year that Aurangazeb died, the Delhi Army under Daud Khan captured Vellore Fort after defeating the Marathas. The struggle for the Delhi throne empowered the Deccan Muslim governors to declare independence. In 1710 the recently established Nawab of Arcot under Sadat Ullah Khan followed suit. Dost Ali, the latters successor in 1733, gifted the fort to one of his sons-in-law.[4]Under control of the British (1760–1947)EditEuropean Burying-Ground at Vellore (MacLeod, p.142, 1871)[5]Followin
