Located 13 km from Varanasi, it is an ancient pilgrimage site that attracts Buddhist devotees from around the world. This temple is considered the crowning achievement of Anagarika Dharmapala (SriLankan), who founded the Maha Bodhi Society in 1891 with the aim of resurrecting the prominence of Buddhism in India and restoring the ancient Buddhist shrines at Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinara.Bhagwan Buddha journey- Lumbini (birth), Enlightenment( Bodhgaya), Sermon (Sarnath), and Moksha (Kushinagar)Interesting story: Emperor Ashoka’s daughter, Bhikkhuni Sanghamitta, visited the Bodhi tree at Bodhi Gaya where Buddha achieved enlightenment, and took a branch cutting and planted it at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. The tree flourished, from which a sapling was taken by Anagarika Dharmapala and planted here in 1931. you can see here Buddha’s first sermon to their first five disciples

Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Parisar.Situated near the main chowk of Sarnath, where the roads divides, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar monastery was built in 1931 with donations from various countries and the international Buddhist community. There are spires on top of the huge building that make it seem like a church. The Vihara is enshrined with the sacred relics of Sakyamuni Buddha.

Moolgandha Kuti Vihar, also known as Deer Park, was built by the Maha Bodhi Society in 1931. Very impressive designs and patterns are made inside the temple. The temple also houses a Bodhi tree, which was planted here through a transplant from a tree from Sri Lanka. The temple is famous for its beautiful and unique Indo-Japanese inspired murals from the life story of Buddha. It is a wonderful place to visit with family and friends.

It was the prime place of worship by the World Buddhist Community, and was constructed by Anagarika Dharmapala, a noble son of Sri Lanka and founder of the Maha Bodhi Society of India. It was inaugerated in the year 1931 and enshrined the sacred relics of Sakhyamuni Buddha. It is located in the Isipatana Deer Park at the eastern side of that place where Buddha preached first sermon. Its wall paintings on Buddhas important episode of life, was done by a famous Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu during the years 1932-1936. The exposition of the sacred relics for the public and its annual procession around Sarnath falls on Kartik Purnima, full moon day in the month of November.

The Maha Bodhi Society of India, the primary caretaker of the Sarnath site, built a new temple at Sarnath in 1931, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, and empowered it with relics of the Buddha. This temple is renowned for its beautiful and unique Indo-Japanese inspired murals of the Buddha’s life story. Directly outside of the temple is a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree from Bodh Gaya, also planted in 1931, which has now grown to fill the courtyard. Here pilgrims come to circumambulate the holy tree and pay their respect to the statues of the Buddha and his first five disciples. This holy garden, with a view of the Damekh Stupa, was envisioned as the location of the second World Peace Bell

Sacred place for the Buddhists, very well maintained. Mulagandhakuti Vihara shrine, marks the place where Buddha spent his first rainy season in meditation. The Mulagandhakuti Vihara is the prime place of worship for the Buddhist congregation of the world. It was constructed by Bodhi-Sattva Anagarika Dharmapala, a Sri Lankan who is the founder of the Maha Bodhi Society of India in the Isipatana Deer Park of Sarnath, at the very site where Sakyamuni Buddha preached his first sermon. The Bodhi tree outside the Mulagandhakuti Vihara was transplanted here in 1931 from a tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, which is said to be the off-spring of the original tree in Bodhgaya under which Buddha attained enlightenment.Inside the temple, there is a big golden idol of sitting Buddha which was installed in 1930s. The wheel represents Royalty or Universal Monarch in ancient meanings. Underneath the Buddha are the five disciples who were with Him at his first sermon. There is a silver casket which is said to contain the original remnants of Buddha which were rescued from the ruins of the 1st century temple.

This Lord Buddha Temple is a new modern construction with an individual architectural style located in Sarnath the most and main visited place of this locality. It was about10 Kms from Varanasi. There have been many other temples and Stupas in Sarnath like starting of the locality Lord Shiva Temple and next a tibbetian temple of Buddha and four other places also exists. It was constructed by the Mahabodhi Society. And this Temple was among the Brick ruins of Sarnath. We feel peace and comfort at this place. And many Buddha statues present here with different avatar and his teachings, budha literature also displayed here with pictures.Beautiful Garden outside the temple with vast area and many foreigners have been visiting here in all seasons. I felt this place is in some other country as this place has distinct look.

Must see..Made by Anagari Dhammapala..Mulagandha Kuti ViharMulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath is situated amidst brick ruins of ancient Sarnath, and is well known for its magnificent murals and frescos. This Buddhist Temple is relatively new and therefore offers a sharp contrast to the ruins of Sarnath; this temple also stands out with its distinct architecture which is nowhere near the style followed by Buddhist architecture. The Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh is particularly famous for its frescos and murals.Sarnath (also known as Mrigadava, Migadaya, Rishipattana, Isipatana) is the deer park where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma. This is also the place where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna. Sarnath is located 13 kilometers north-east of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, India.Isipatana or Sarnath was mentioned by the Buddha as one of the four places of pilgrimage which his devout followers should visit.History :The Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath in India been erected by the Maha Bodhi society in the year 1931. The frescos on the walls of this monastery were done by the famous Kosetsu Nosu who happens to be Japans foremost painter.Description :Built around a large compound of lush well manicured lawns and gardens, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath resembles a Hindu temple as far as its structure is concerned. The Mulagandha Kuti Vihar In Sarnath In Uttar Pradesh boasts of some of the most magnificent and colorful Frescoes that have been made by the magical hands of. Kosetsu Nosu a famous Japanese painter. The frescos at the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar Sarnath are rich repositories of Buddhist literature. The frescos depict scenes from the life of Buddha and stories from Jatakas; accounts of Buddha’s disciples, miracles shown by the Lord Buddha, etc. While Frescoes dominate the interiors of Mulagandha, Murals are mainly to be seen on the exteriors. They can be seen on walls and pillars along with the outer columns.A huge bell dominates the entrance of the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar. The royal scions of Japan have gifted this mammoth bronze bell to the temple. However, the most striking aspect of this temple is the beautiful life-size golden idol of the Lord Buddha that is installed at the sanctum. In the campus of the Vihar you can also see the Bodhi tree whose sapling was brought from a tree in Sri Lanka, which was in turn grown from a sapling of the original Maha Bodhi tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, 2500 years ago. Mahendra and Sanghmitra, son and daughter of Ashoka the Great respectively, took the sapling from this original tree during their voyage to Sri Lanka.

Root grinderMoolagandha Kuti is the temple of Gautama Buddha. The Chinese traveler Xuanzang, who came to India in the seventh century, described it as the 200-foot-high Moolagandha Kuti Vihar. The carved shells and small pillars built on this temple suggest that it must have been built during the Gupta period. The temple is replaced with sculptures of Gautama Buddha giving initiation to his five disciples.

Moolagandh Kuti ViharThis vihara is located north of Dharmarajika Stupa. The east facing square of this vihara is square with one arm 18.29 m. is. The Chinese traveler Xuan Tsang, who visited India in the seventh century, described it as the 200-foot-tall Moolagandha Kuti Vihar. The carved shells and concave castings, small pillars and beautiful artistic erosions built on this temple make it certain that it was built during the Gupta period. But some scholars believe it to be around the 8th century, based on the paved floors made of mud and lime around it and the chaotic carved stones used on the exterior of the walls. It appears that under the mandapa built in the middle of this temple, initially a gold shining life-size statue of Lord Buddha was installed. The entrance to the temple had one gate in each of the three directions and the main entrance (lion gate) in the east. Later, when the roof of the temple began to weaken, the inner Dakshinapath was closed by lifting the walls to protect it. Thus, the way of coming was left only from the main gate of the east. With the closing of the three doors, it became like a cell, which was later given the shape of small temples. In 1904 AD, while digging Mr. Ortal, he found a 9 ½ X 9 ½ feet Mauryan altar made of monolithic stone in the south cell. This Vedika has a bright polishing of that time. This Vedika was initially around the Harnika above the Dharmarajika Stupa. Two articles are written on this Vedika in the Kushanian Brahmi script - Achaya (ryāya) na Sarvastivadi na Parigrhetavam and Acharyana Sarvastivadinam Parigrahe. It is known from both these writings that in the third century AD this Vedika was presented to the masters of the Sarvastivist sect.
