It feels like visiting a heritage place when here, because it is one! It was built by Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad, the ruler of Vadodara state a few centuries ago. About the book-collection, it contains readables in various languages. Youd definitely get classics but getting a newly released novel might depend on your luck. The library provides almost everything that a college student would need. Such an organized infrastructure lasting since centuries, is a feat in itself!

Books are good. The storing system on shelves is nice. But the main problem is that the system for finding books is poor. The software they installed for it is not functional. If you keep the book in front of you and give its exact title and details, still it will show that there is no such book in the library. Also the quality of the books is extremely poor. Not very nice. I am giving it 2 stars only for its collection.

Library has wooden roof and stacks are separated, so one can find books easily. The entire structure was designed to exact specification and executed by J. Snead and Co., USA, who also designed the Library of Congress, Washington. The Ground floor has kota stone Tiles and the upper 3 floors are fitted with huge glass floor tiles. These tiles ensured that the metal armature and shelves on which the books are stacked do not heat up in the summer and freeze in the winter, and so keeping the books stocked at an even temperature.

Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad was the first ruler to introduce compulsory and free primary education in his state in Year 1906, placing his territory far in advance of British India. His prosperous library became the core of today’s Central Library of Baroda with a network of libraries in all the towns and villages in his state. The Central Library of Baroda was built in Year 1910-11. It was one of the first public libraries to be set up in India. Above all things, they have very rude and unhelpful staff. It tooks 45 minutes just to process membership form. They dont help even after you ask them, behave like they dont like to do their job. Also books are poorly maintained. Dust on books in many sections. And this is supposed to be central library of Vadodara city.
