The temple complex covers an area of 14.5 acres (5.9 ha), measuring 850 feet long and 756 feet wide, and all its shrines are enclosed with concentric rectangular walls, with a massive Rajagopuram.[5] Sangili Mandapam built on 1647 by vadamalaiyappa pillayan connects the Ganthimathi Amman and Nellaiyappar temples.[6] The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Swamy Nellaiappar and his consort Sri Kanthimathi Ambal being the most prominent. The Nandi mandapam has a fairly big statue of Nandi (the bull God), similar to those at Tanjore and Rameswaram . The unique feature of the temple is the Mani manadapam located near the nandi mandapam with two giant pillars carved out of a single stone and each one is having 48 sub pillars which produce musical notes when struck. Tamil poet says that the pillars here are a combination of the Shruti Gana Laya types. Other mandapams in the temple include Oonjal Mandapam and the 1000 pillared hall.

Nellaiappar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located in Tirunelveli, a city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Shiva is worshipped as Nellaiappar (also called Venuvananathar) represented by the lingam and his consort Parvati is depicted as Kanthimathi Amman. The temple is located on the northern banks of Thamirabarani River in Tirunelveli district. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.

Each and every inch is sculptured to perfection, standing still since 7th century. Much visit this place to witness the extraordinary architecture knowledge of our ancestors. Pillars are made of single stone but the sound it creates differs - till date no one knows how they did it. With the current modern technology it will take atleast a couple of decade to get this done.

One of the most amazing temples that are a testament to the Tamil history. This one, built by the Pandya rulers in 700 AD, is carved out of stone completely. The intricacy in the craftsmanship is unbelievable. You can see inscriptions about the Pandya rule and about the deities on the wall and on the floor as well, etched into individual blocks.A nominal fee of 5 rupees is charged to enter which is fine considering they have to maintain such a huge temple. Apparently this temple has 5 gopurams and is said to be bigger than the world-famous Meenakshi temple. Just that, it is not as popular as the latter. This temple also has clustered musical pillars which when struck gives you sounds of different musical instruments. You will able to find an elderly local explaining this to people. Speak to the pandits and the locals around to understand the stories and history behind the temple. Its an eye-opening experience because people were soo kind in here.A beautiful place to visit, worshippers and travelers alike, to enjoy the ancient art and architecture that holds a reverence.

Fantastic musical pillarsNellaiappar temple.. TirunenveliOur temples are Marvels of Engineering & technology 🙏. Unsolved mystery of the musical pillar, a cluster of 48 pillars were carved from a single rock & they surround a central pillar, the Pillars can produce the 7 basic musical sounds. Interestingly, surrounding Pillars vibrates when one of them is tapped, they are 161 Pillars in total. See Nellaiappar temple (dedicated to lord Shiva ) Thirukovil, Tamilnadu, Bharat. 7th century AD.

Magnificent and GIVINGOne should faint on seeing the beautiful intricate engineering excellence in the stone pillers. All done much before the invention of metal cutting machines ( leave NC or CNC Machines). How human can make the innumerable pillers, lay them, make leak proof, ventilated, illuminate??????? Some foolish mindless local politicos question whether GODS where engineers.... but this temple alone can depict... the stone work is much above abilities of engineering of the times they were carved. This work is much above that of Pyramids, Bethehem, Rome ( I do not want to antagonise someone) or in line with thiruchedur, madurai, udipi, srirangam in terms of details of stone work.
