Really peaceful and devotional place
Thenthittai10 k. From Tanjore.Thittai in Tamil means sanddunes formed during one Tsunami long back. Before Japanese named it Tsunami very long back it was called as piralayam or Kadal kol (swallowed by sea)As this sand dunes formed in the south it is called as Then(south)thittai.Great rishi Vashister ,the Guru and teacher of great Rama, had a Ashram here and worshiped Shiva here.Shiva thus here called as Vasishteshwarar.Chola kings guilt this temple. The temple is constructed fully with stones from basement to top tower. It is beleived that a drop of water falls from the ceiling because of the presence of a very special stones called Chandrakantha kal(moon magnetic stone )and Surya kantha kal,(sun magnetic stone) are fixed under the roof which absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and converts in to a drop of water.it falls on Shiva every 24 min(1 nazhigai in tamil means 24 min)The temple tank opposite to the temple Chakra theertham is created by Vishnu by his Sudharshana Chakra. Here Guru is a Raja guru in a standing position,as he received teachings from rishi Vashista. It is believed that Lord Shiva elevated Guru to a place in the Navagraha at this place.Only in three places Guru(the navagraha star)is worshipped as Gurubagwan ie here,Thiruvalithayam (Padi)and Thiruchendur. All other places the Dakshnamoorthy is worshipped as Guru BagwanHere only the Guru has a separate shrine with separate Vimanam(tower)another unique is Guru stands between Lord and Goddess here only.In front of the hall Goddess shrine on the ceiling 12 zodiac signs are carved beautifully in stone. It is beleived that by standing under one,a respective zodiac sign and praying to the Goddess, ones wishes will be fulfilledNearly twice sun worshiping the Lord twice by directing his Rays on the Lingam.Once in thatchana puna kalam and another on in uthrayana kalan.
11 km from thanjavur. Remote place . Use own vehicle to go there
Life time visit. You will find Lord Shiva with Godess Parvathi devi together which is rarely find in Shiva temple. This is called Kailasha blessing by both of them.

People from department of tamilnadu government should focus on temple cleanliness.....such a great temple
Small temple and it has a beautiful pond in front of it with full of water. It has good parking space and located on the main road itself. No need to drive interior like we do for other temples in that locality. Chandragandhakkal installed on the ceiling above Vasisteswarar. When i requested the priest to show it to me, without any hesitation,he has shown it . for every 24 min, a drop of water drips on the linga from this Chandra gandhakkal...

Good maintenance and nice temple
Ancient temple meant for Guru Bhagavan.
Sri Vasisteswarar Temple, located at Thittai (Thenkudi Thittai), between the rivers Vennaru and Vettaru - both of which are tributaries of river Kaveri,10 kms from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu , is a Padal Petra Sthalam - Padigams by Saint Gna Sambhandar. . There are 278 Padal Petra Sthalams (Sung by Great Saivaite Saints (Appar, Sundarar, Gna Sambhandar & Manickavachakar). This place is also known as Therur or Rathapuri which originates from the legend that the chariot (“Ther”) of a king got stuck in the sand dunes here. The historical names of this place are Vilvaranyam, Vasishtasramam, Dhenupuri and “Kudeethveepam” (in Sanskrit)A drop of water falls on the Shiva linga every 24 minutes from the ceiling because of the presence of a very special stone called Chandrakanth kept on the roof which absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and converts into a drop of water. Two stones Suryagaanthakkal and Chandragaanthakkal which are placed at strategic points above the Vimana are the reasons for the droplets of water which falls on the deity. These 2 stones absorb moisture from the atmosphere, convert into 1 water droplet, performing a natural Abhishegam to the deity, every 24 minutes (1 Naazhigai), be it the day or night.A small piece of yellow cloth (Dhothi) which covers the Lingam is always wet because of this. If one can wait patiently, they can view this amazing act. That shows the scientific and architectural brilliance of our ancestors who have made this temple. This is one of the famous Guru (Jupitar) Parikara sthalam. (like Thiruchendur Subhramanya swamy temple, Alandur Apatsakayeswarar temple).Moolavar: Sri Vashishteswarar, Sri Dhenupureeswarar,Sri PasupathinatharAmbal: Sri Suganda Kundalambikai, Sri Ulaganayagi,Sri Mangaleswari;Theertham : Pasu Theertham, Soola Theertham, Chakra Theertham; Sthala Vriksham : Mullai, Chenbagam and Chevvanthi; Lord Shiva in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested). This east facing temple Rajagopuram has 3-tiers.As per the legend, during the great deluge (“pralayam”), when the entire universe was submerged, this place stood aloft like a sand dune (Thittai in Tamil). It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared at this place as a Swayambu Lingam. Hence this place gets the name Thenkudi Thittai (sand dune on the southern side). As per another legend,, Guru was a very learned scholar and became the teacher (Guru) to the Devas. Once when he had gone to visit Indira, Indira did not receive him as he was busy watching Urvasi’s dance. Angered by this slight, Guru abandoned the Devas and started living as a recluse. Without his guidance, the life of Devas became miserable and the demons started terrorising them. Realising his mistake, Indira searched for Guru in order to ask for his apology but he could not find him. Indira visited many Shiva temples and prayed to the lord to help him find Guru. When he visited this temple, Guru decided to appear before him and pardoned him.Sage Vashishtar had his hermitage here, he installed a lingam and performed penance. Hence, Lord Shiva is praised here as “Sri Vashishteswarar”. Also, as a mark of respect, Guru stood up and received teachings from Sage Vashishtar. It is believed that Lord Shiva elevated Guru to a place in the Navagrahams at this place. As per another legend, Chola king named Jayan performed the maha yagna “Rudra Paasupatha” here, which is equal to performing 100 “Aswametha yagna”. This earned him the position of Indira.Must have darshan of this ancient temple.

Temple famous for Guru Bhagawan and usually its very busy during Guru Peyarchi festival when Lord Guru moves from one planet to other planet. Temple architecture is very beautiful and Nine planet (Rasi) pictures carved on the roof is notably impressive. The flag tower is made up of stone which is very unique and different. There is plenty of open space available for car parking. Temple is situated 10 kilometres from Thanjavur on Thanjavur-Kumbakonam main road. Ancient temple to watch for when you are traveling to Thanjavur next time.
