Martyrs Column or രക്തസാക്ഷി മണ്ഡപം (Rakthasaakshi Mandapam - in Malayalam) is one of the most important Public Landmarks of the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram. Situated in the heart of the city in Palayam,The Column was constructed in the Capital after the formation of the State of Kerala in 1956 in memory of those who laid down their lives fighting for Indias freedom. It was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 14th August 1957.Today, its seen as a symbol of the democratic credentials of India and practically all public agitations or protests against the Central and State Governments commence from this Memorial. Even after 63 years of existence, the Column is well maintained and is worth a visit to pay homage to our founding fathers.
