Mental Health Centre, Thiruvananthapuram is located in Thiruvananthapuram District, in the Southernmost of the state of Kerala. The campus is situated about 10 kms away from the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. It was established in 1870 by Honorary Royal King of Travancore and during that period the Mental Hospital took care of patients with Epilepsy, Mental Retardation and Psychiatric conditions. Later in 1985, the hospital was renamed as Mental Health centre. Now it is a 507 bedded hospital covering 36 acres with 34 wards, pond and trees. In early years, there was no system of patient care with patient bystander. The patients whowere admitted here was rejected by the Society and stayed here till the end of life. A hope and ray of light entered in this hospital by the visit of Mother Teresa in 1983. Her valuable suggestions and ideas paved a way for Public Support and foundation for various developmental activities within the hospital.Mentally ill patients from all over the country are getting admitted here and receives excellent treatment care. A Library functioning in Mental Health centre has nearly 6,000 books. These books are utilized by inpatients either in wards or by visiting library.

Very calm and quite place. Green environment and good atmosphere but since it is government property I dont see any improvements in the developments or constructions of the buildings/structure. Most of the rooms in pay wards are not clean and very old. There is no foul smell and all but still it can keep clean and government should do something for the renovation of the buildings inside it.

Premier mental health hospital in Kerala. Vast area and convenient location. Parking possible outside. Small snacks and tea shops are there nearby. Attention is good to patients.

It requires more expansion to separate violent inmates from less noisy lunatics. The availability of mental health centres in other districts are limited. The government should start already one more hospital like this between Kuthiravattom and Oolanpara. The quality of medicine is not up to the branded standard. Once you get admitted realise that mental illness is not curable. Medical students frequently visit and disturb patients. The charity of food is a remarkable contribution by the government. Patients are shown movies occasionally. Isolated narrow cells have limited hygiene. Paywards are less expensive. The campus have more room for new buildings.

Much famous, mostly infamous and synonymous with mental illness, its more of an asylum for the ill fated.the hospital still finds itself in controversially cases of ill treatment to death, intentional detention for private gains and even helping some get out the the hands of law by getting certified as act of mental instability. But the hospital began and still runs with the good intentions of curing as many cases as possible and providing a safe shelter for the ones who cant.Even with the controversies involved, one cannot ignore the contribution to society that this hospital continues to deliver. Nor can we ignore how the location name itself have become a household name and a part of casual comm

Even though the disease is completely curable, there are many experiences that many are not willing to take up. Therefore, it is important for the relatives of the patients to be aware of the same.
