A hidden gem monastery. Not many guides or drives take you here, I found this and insisted we go here it was worth it. The monastery is less crowded and has young monks playing football etc i had a go with it was fun. People there are nice too. The landscape and monastery is awesome. I do recommend visiting.
Beautiful experience! Kids and monks playing football on the monastic grounds by the cliff side! Entry to the temples is free, and one can take a few photographs. This is just a 10-15 min walk up the Dzong view point. Trust me the view of the Thimphu city is awe-inspiring from this place. The only Monastry in Thimphu which offers the experience to witness young monks and kids live and enjoy the monastic education and life.
Dechen Phodrang is said to be original site where Trashi Chodzong was located. It was supposed to be Do Ngoen Dzong which was brought under Zhabdrung from Lam Lhapa. According to some elders, the present structure which we refer as Dechen Phodrang Lhakhang was Zimchung of Zhabdrung Rinpoche that has survived when dzong was destroyed by fire.Tashi Chodzong was shifted to present location after this incident.
This is one of the must visit places near Thimphu. Its one of the ancient monasteries of Bhutan which is still in use. There is no restrictions on photography and it is pretty quite and idyllic in nature. The old wood stairs still bear the signature of a bygone time. The whole place is neat and clean and it also houses some exquisite 12th century artworks which are presently maintained by UNESCO
