The Golden Gate of Kyiv (Ukrainian: Золоті ворота, Zoloti vorota) was the main gate in the 11th century fortifications of Kyiv, the capital of Kyivan Rus. It was named in imitation of the Golden Gate of Constantinople. The structure was dismantled in the Middle Ages, leaving few vestiges of its existence. It was rebuilt completely by the Soviet authorities in 1982, though no images of the original gates have survived. The decision has been immensely controversial because there were many competing reconstructions of what the original gate might have looked like
This is a beautiful place which contains the ruins of the ancient gates of Kiev Rus times. If you like history, you will like this museum. Tours are available too. And for the rest of people it is a favourite meeting point. There are benches around, a fountain under the trees, and an underground station nearby. And it is the centre of the Old City. You can walk around and explore the streets and cathedrals or just choose one of the numerous cafes or restaurants to relax.
Golden Gate original entrance to the Ancient City of Kiev. Replica rebuilt on the historic site of the gate. Originally with dirt ramparts reinforced with timber. Todays structure has a consecrated church (not in use) of the Ascension of Mary on the top of the gate house. Monument on the side of the gate of the l victorious son of Vladimir after a brutal civil war to become the next ruler on his fathers death. In the back a statue of a cat, said to have saved many lives when alarming the people in a building close by of fire.
Wow, what a structure.Yet to go inside but highly impressive from the outside as is the public space it stand in.Certainly one of if not the most iconic structures in Kiev.
This is a very iconic area in Kiev and definitely a must see. It is very easy to get to as the Zoloti Vorota metro is right in the square. The surrounding neighborhoods have plenty of cafes, perfect to spend a relaxed morning in the city.
Whoa, what a beautiful sight to see. Grab a coffee from one of the street vendors and then hang out and check out the beautiful view. We were treated to a street music performer. Must check out.
Beautiful place, nice environment, seating place and small cafe in vicinity to the metro
The structure itself is quite impressive, but then you start reading more about it on Wikipedia and you realise that its basically a fictional design made during the soviet era, purely it seems as a tourist attraction. Im not sure whats inside, but seeing it from the outside for free was enough for me.The area around the gate is quite interesting to explore a little.
Not too much to see except old archaic buildings of over 1000 years. Must visit to learn about the historic lessons of the city
This is cool place to see. Nice to see part of history of Kiev. Nice coffe bars around and lots of people.
A handful of contemporary exhibitions, no great views, not much information to explain the history, and no translations for tourists.
If you are visiting Kyiv for the first time you should definitely come here. Very old and historical place, loots of small rooms and corridors to explore and experience architecture from 1017. Its 32 meters high, very beautiful with beautiful views of the city around it.Entrance is paid but not a lot, definitely worth the money you pay.
I really dont know much about this thing. Its just there and people like to meet here. Nice little pavilion next to it that you can sit at. Lots of shops and restaurants near by.
A nice place to be. Nice cafes, and a lot of people, enjoying the nice weather!
Amazing place. Village like feel.. Lovely narrow alleyways and cafés around!
A must visit if you are in Kyiv. There are many good restaurants around as well
Main gate of the 11th century fortification in Kyiv. Located directly at the metro station and a usually pretty crowded place sometimes with street musicians. The surrounding is part of historical Kyiv.
Prices change due to constant art exhibitions. A very nice historical place!
Although its a replica, you get a good impression of the ancient city gate. Very interesting that the city wall was built by wood and soil and only the gate itself was from stones.
Worth taking a photo, but not really worth visiting the museum inside. It is overpriced while being a non-authentic reconstructions with no items to exhibit.St Sophia Cathedral nearby is much more worth visiting.
Nice rebuilt fortification. Takes about 30 min to 1 hour to get through. Normal Kyiv prices (a couple bucks)
It’s interesting place to discover it, it’s old also in good place, you can find big fountain near of it, also some cafes and restaurants
The historical and historic entrance to the ancient city. A slightly fanciful restoration but a pleasant landmark of Kyiv. Right next to the metro station of the same name. Lots of bars, cafes and restaurants in the area. A nice place for a stroll in summer. Busy at peak times, though.
Golden Gate is definitely a must even if you are visiting Kiev for just a weekend.
Quite a historic place and it has a picturesque view.
Great place, must see for everyone who came to Kyiv.
Nice place with interesting history; however, the introduction video at the entrance is made just in Russian or Ukrainian (I cant distinguish between them); thats why Id suggest they make the video available in English too.
I expected a little bit more, but other than that its just a pretty wooden building.
Lovely historical site at the heart of Kyiv, I didnt visit the museum, the park was well maintained, and a live singing group was great entertainment with reggae tracks...
Golden Gate in Kiev city is worth a visit. Kiev itself is a glorious city. I have visited it twice and soon I will visit it again. What a wonderful time!!!
Nice place. Street musicians perform here frequently
History location.
Nice restaurants around
Pay more for having an actual camera? Everyone has a smart phone with a camera.. Doesnt make any sense
Pretty spot with lots of good places all around.
Nice place
Impressive old building, over a thousand years old. If you are in the area and you pay a visit to it you will be rewarded with fabulous views of the city.
Very cool from outside and surrounding gardens. Was closed for winter so didnt get to see the inside. As you can see in my pictures, its far from winter conditions outside though.
Great history and beautiful and happy city vibes!
Not really special but the metro is nice
I was surprised by the size of the place. Right in the middle of apartment complex and metro. A small museum as well, if you are a history buff you will enjoy visiting here.
Great food and service in one Kyivs main tourist attractions but still feels like a secret spot
Nice too see, but very poor exposition.
This is famed in story and song, being the most beautiful gate of the early medieval city. The composer Modest Mussorgsky wrote a beautiful piece of music inspired by a picture of the gate, which was later arranged for a full orchestra by Ravel. The gate itself is a reconstruction, as the original gate is long destroyed. A statue of Yaroslav the Wise is beside the gate and the reconstructed gate gives some idea of what the outer walls and fortress of the city would have looked like in the Middle Ages before the Mongol Invasion. The Gate itself was not open to the public on weekdays during the winter, but even the exterior is very interesting to look at.
Nice place ,in a busy square full of little cafes ,food stalls and right next to metro station
The small spot to imagine a huge wall of an ancient Kyiv. The modern building was built around the ruin of an old golden gate, which can be seen inside. The exposition is small, you would not see much, but the experience worth the money and the time spent.
Neat little place with ALOT of history. There isnt much here unfortunately to read on. Not much in English or really much at all. Only a few small historical objects. I think just seeing this from the outside is all thats really needed.
Must visit Baron Castle near Golden Gate. Historical place with beautiful architecture and Creative Studio Artos at the second floor
One of main gate to Kiev. It’s name coming from golden doom or it was gold collected to enter this gate then. A monument is dedicated to the one of the prince of Kiev. Euroslove, called wise. He made his children to get married with rulers of other kingdom that way to have a hold.
Its so beautiful
Very nice place to visit from outside but nothing from inside the building
Pretty impressive replica of the original. The scale is impressive. Worth a look.
Great historical please and excellent meeting point
Very old gate from the original part of the city. Having been restored it still looks great. There is a nice fountain next to it and other statues as well. Plently of restaurants and cafes as well. It is located next to the metro and is a good place to start for a tourist walk of the old town and city. It is worth seeing.
Interesting part of Kievs history and enterance to the old city. Sat outside and watched the world go by. A visit to the restaurant on the other side is worth a visit of only to see the sculpture made of plastic forks 😀
There used to be a big walled city something like year 1037 and this is whats left of it. Entrance was 50 UAH where u can see whats left of it, and climb up and have a view. It is nice but didnt change my life.
Very interesting in the storage place its a must do because you can get to the top and its very cheap
Interesting building, a few benches and cafes around
It was a part of Kiev protection wall (fortress) Nice place located at the middle of the city, near embassies of European Union countries like Poland, France, Italy and ... . people always selling flowers in front of the entrance. Mcdonalds is also can be reached with a 5 minute walk. Dont know if it is always open or not but plan to visit it at least once; may be on the way home.
A great place which is worth seeing once.
Meet a rendezvous with Dr.J here its a beautiful place to meet me Dan porter Loves you
Nice place to visit in Kyiv city
Fascinating building
Beautiful tourist attractions around this area!
I did not go inside, but took only photos of it fromthe outside.
