A must visit place when in Tabo. Tabo is small town that comes on the way from Kapla to Kaza. Its a must must halt that tourists should take and stay at least 1 night. The premises here has two monasteries.. One is old monastery which is not in a great condition but open to visitors. The second is a new monastery which is very beautiful. The views around are awesome. The entire vibe of the place is simply soothing. The Old monastery is one of the oldest in the world.
A serene, tranquil calming experience at this small town, approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Kaza town. Hence try leaving early or else spend a few night here, you will find a few hotels or homestays. We had a very unique experience at this particular Monastery, the monks showed us around and toke us inside and gave a wholesome information about the monastery.
A beautiful depiction of Buddhism with the help of nine temples and golden temple. One of the oldest monastery of India situated at the height of about 10,000 feet. Culturally rich heritage place. Tabo caves are the best place to meditate. You will feel a different calmness and serene vibe in the environment.
Marvelous architecture.Interaction with monks will increase your knowledge base.
Old monastery is well maintained and wall painting are just amazing.
I spent a very peaceful and calm time here.
The monasterys restaurant served the best food in all of the cafes and restos we dined in Spiti. I would say, the resto itself is worth the visit!Rooms are clean, cozy and spacious.
Tabo Monastery is consider to be one of the oldest Monastery in india and said to Ajanta of the Himalayas. One should visit the main monastery which is dark, very cold but has a very positive vibes and pin drop silent. Photography is not allowed their. You can also find some stores to buy souvenir for your love one.
Amazing experience at this 1000 yr old monastery in Spiti
This place is very great. The pictures which are on the wall are painted almost 1000 years ago with the help of pigments which are extracted from the flowers.Very rich cultural and tradition here
Oldest running monastery in India, do not skip this place in your Spiti Travels. Old structures are still well preserved. This place exudes peaceful vibes, have a stroll around in the old monastery, will be a calming experience.
Tabo Monastery is one of my favourite one, it also has a newly made extension for prayers. It is an ancient monastery that was established in 996 CE. It is considered to be an important monastery and is often referred to as the Ajanta of the Himalayas. The complex has 9 temples and many stupas—all of which are made in mud and have been standing like this for more than 1000 years. Sharing some pics from my trip in July 2018.
Tabo monastery, a monastery functional from 10 century onwards and a mystical place in true sense. The moment you step inside you feel that energy, you feel that stillness and calmness. The experience that I had there cannot be described in words. Entering the main prayer/meditation hall it felt like entering a different dimension altogether, a dimension where i wasnt bound by my body or time for that matter. I believe everyone who goes there have a different kind of experience... A must visit place if you are keen on rediscovering yourself.
It is a place just for a hault between nako and kaza. Dont expect good food and services here as it is a very remote area. Only for the tourists they have created it as a spot.
This old monastery is 1100 years old and hence its also called millennium monastery and Indias oldest functioning monastery. It has beautiful wall paintings and also considered the Ajanta Ellora of Himalayas. You must visit once to experience it.
Wonderful and very peaceful place

Beautiful one.. But not well maintained.. Government should look after it properly..
Excellent especially the old monastery which is more than 1000 years old. The Dalai Lama considers Tabo Monastery the holiest and wants to retire here.
Its the best monastery of the world! In love with the old monastery. There is no light in the old monastery so its preferable to visit between 11 to 4. It is majorly made of mud and has Egypt like feel. The hand painted wall painting will leave u awestruck.
Beautiful, Cultural and peaceful experience. This is one of the oldest Monastery which is still active. It was built in around 996 AD. It has great cultural significance. Peaceful people ❤️♥️
Great art its peace of mind and feel natural good and positive vibes in this place
Very pleasant monastery and very friendly monks. Showed us the monastery with a lot of patience and answered all out question. The gold paintings were mesmerizing considering the time period they were drawn. The monastery is a combination of ancient culture as well as modern buildings.
Just a serene and peaceful place!! Tabo is the best place in the whole Spiti Circuit!
A place where u can find ur inner peace...
Tabo Monastery (the old one), is extremely different from any other monastery I have seen throughout Spiti or Kinnaur. Built within kind of huge mud dwellings, with paintings on the wall that are centuries old, the serenity and the peace one feels is different. Beautifully different. One isnt allowed to take photos within the old monastery shrine, however have posted some of the new monastery. This too is beautiful as one can see.
Very nice and ancient approx 1024 years
Good monastery.Some clay structures around.
Tabo is very great place. Its main attraction is the old monastery which walls is filled with a lot of ancient paintings of different yoga postures. The paintings are beautiful, spiritual and antique. But its need some more carefulness and protection. We visit here in the mid of August and during day the weather was very awesome as you can see from picture. The sky is so clear at night that you can see milky-way from eye without any equipment which was a awesome experience. We recorded star trail also which was a good thing to do in this clear sky.
Unique in its own way! Do visit the old monastery located inside the premises.

One should definitely opt to stay a day or two at this beautiful village. There are plenty of home stays available with friendly people around.i recommend to buy souvenir from here rather than Kaza. Cafes are also available. You can visit old as well as bee monastery.
Tabi monastery is very beautiful. Tano village also. Its a pleasant experience to stay in Tabo. Its a tiny place.
Not much to see here in the afternoon but a night sky view from such a small place is as clear as it can ever get. You must stay there for a night.

Way to tabo is adventures. Apple orchid.BRO did a fantastic job. Superb road conditions. Journey to Tabo is an amazing experience.
Neat and clean place
Monastery that is located right at the town. Easy to visit, flat and leveled ground. Accessible for people in a wheel chair which is super rare in Spiti.Quick to visit, nice area to sit around and enjoy some peacefulness. Calm, can get pretty hot on a sunny day.The place is clean but they need to work on certain areas as its a little bit of a safety hazard (patio was destroyed at some places).
Oldest Monestry...1050 years
Well build in 996AD, this Monastery holds great importance for Buddhist ☸ Pilgrims. A must visit place when you r in Spiti Valley
Peace and tranquility.

The Tabo Monastery (Tabo Chos-Khor Monastery) is located in the Tabo village of Spiti Valley. A dry high-altitude desert region, the monastery is found at 3,050 m above sea level. The monastery was founded in 996 CE in the Tibetan year of the Fire Ape. The monastery was founded by the Tibetan Buddhist lotswa (translator), Rinchen Zangpo (Mahauru Ramabhadra), who was the king of the western Himalayan Kingdom of Guge. Tabo is known for being the oldest Buddhist enclave that has been continuously operating in both India and the Himalayas.......

The place where I belong, it is amazing there are two temples one is old one which is thousand years old founded in 996 CE built by Buddhist king Yeshe-ö . It has extensive murals on walls and sculptures of Gods and goddesses beautifully preserved inside the monastryother one is new temple which has been built recently and all the major cultural functions and gatherings are held here
The oldest in Asia
The morning prayers start around 7 am,which is an experience one must have once in their lifetime. After the prayers the young monks have classes from 8 to 9 which you can experience with permission. The monks will offer butter tea and Tibetan bread which should be tried once. The old monastery is of typical Spitian architecture, made of mud, which is in danger of being destroyed because of the rains that Spiti has started to receive due to climate change. When visiting the old monastery carry a torch if possible and ask a monk to come along and guide you. They will have a torch if you dont have one. You can buy souvenirs, thangka paintings or picture postcards from here. All proceeds go into preserving of the monastery.
