Hard to rate. The good points are that the ingredients are high quality. Its not a bog standard Indian. It does NOT include loads of colours and too much oils. Its very different cuisine from most Indian restaurants. This I think is South Indian food whereas most Indian places are actually Bangladeshi. We had to wait 90 minutes just for our delivery to be prepared and I ended up picking it up myself. My family who are South Asian didnt like it but then South Indian food is different to what theyre used to. If you like South Indian food you might mark it higher but for my family none of the family liked the flavours much. Given it is more expensive than the average Indian restaurant despite not tasting that great Ive only given three stars. If you like this specific type of cuisine you might love it but Ill still go with Mirchiz just down the road which costs the same with good ingredients but just has better flavours.
Indian restaurant in York, small number of covers, very busy. Food astounding, not your usual Indian menu, stuff youll not see elsewhere, one of the best Indian meals Ive had. Not expensive, if in York, book a table, youll not be disappointed!
Whilst visiting we happened upon Atithi purely because it was close to our accommodation and we were not disappointed! Simply superb food perfectly spiced and just the right portion size. Highly recommend!
Freshly cooked food that was a dream to eat. Staff are very friendly and the chief has made some dishes using a fantastic range of herbs and spices and you can also order the classics but I would definitely recommend trying something new. 10/10
Possibly the best Indian food I have eaten. Attentive staff with excellent service.Would 100% recommend.
We ate last night 19/9/2012 . Just around the corner from the Novotel, literally a 3 minute walk. The choices on the menu were plentiful with probably something to suit everyone’s taste . Service was great and attention to the guests in the restaurant first class. The starters and main courses were fantastic, (we didn’t have a sweet as we were too full) very flavourful and beautifully presented. A excellent experience and one we will repeat when we are back in York.
If I could rate this restaurant more than 5 Stars I would without hesitation. The restaurant has a delightful ambience and a really knowledgeable owner who guided my wife and I through the menu. It has dishes Ive not seen in England so we were able to experience new delights. The food was simply the best weve tasted outside of India and the whole dining experience was superb from our starters to the Matka Kulfi and coffee to round off our meal enhanced by the brilliant owner. I cant recommend this restaurant highly enough and next time were in York it will be where we go for our first meal. Please go there you wont be disappointed!
Great service, lovely food, all in all no complaints! Be sure to get some naans as they are lovely you can tell they are made in a tandoor, also the lassi (sweet) is delightful!
Really fantastic wee find on my trip to York. The reviews are not wrong food was amazing, service was excellent too! Get it booked!
Collected food to eat at home. Good diverse menu. Will eat in next time
Food was horrible and once we had finished the mains they asked us to leave before we had finished our drinks to free up the table. Absolutely disgusting service
Stunning food!!! Lots of veggie options. Would definitely recommend!!!
We were craving some authentic Indian food when we chanced upon this gem and were completely sold when we saw the menu. The food is really fresh and tastes like something that is out of an Indian home with flavours that are rare when you are so many miles away. We ordered the beet root and paneer cutlets and the hara bhara kebab for starters which were hot, soft and melt in your mouth, and we polished it off really quickly! For mains I got the paneer karahi masala, dal makhani and chicken bhuna, along with chilli garlic naans. All delicious! We asked for really spicy food- and a word of caution here, they actually do dial the spice up when you request that. We thoroughly enjoyed it, but make sure you tell them to lower it for you if extra spice doesn’t suit your palate. The service was warm and friendly, and we will definitely make it back whenever we are in York again.
Ordered food from Atithi during lockdown and the selection of vegetarian dishes was overwhelming! It was lovely to be faced with so much choice! The good arrived quickly and piping hot, all of our dishes were lovely and well made.I’m looking forward to visiting and eating in the restaurant - easily my new favourite Indian restaurant.
One of my favourite restauranta in York! Great vegetarian options
Only Indian restaurant in the UK that served food which actually tastes Indian. Everywhere else I found it was not quite original even if it tasted good. Will surely be visiting this restaurant again simply for the superb dishes. That said, everything else including service, attitude of owner, seating and ambiance were so-so. Prices are comparatively on the expensive side.Good menu. Good choices. Great food.
Went here on our recent weekend away and have to say it was one of the best Indian meals Ive ever had. Excellent friendly service and the bill was extremely reasonable for food of this Quality. My compliments to the Excellent chef.
It was ok a little bit lacking of spices
Exceptionally good food. Cosy and homely interior with affable and attentive waiting staff. The menu doesn’t give much away but every dish is prepared with great care and a beautiful blend of spices. Highly recommend.
The place was really nice so I would give 5 stars, but the chicken molie I had was very nice but not amazing. All in all a good place though and would go again.
Had a lovely meal here, very friendly server and the food was beautiful.. I had the Chicken and Chorizo curry and hubby had the haggis curry. Both were unbelievably tasty. Would definitely recommend.
Managed to accommodate us last minute (3 people), so we were really grateful for that.Food was really delicious and full of flavour. We would definitely recommend!
Absolutely superb meal from this little gem of a restaurant. Authentic Indian food at its best with an occasional creative twist. Highly recommended.
Amazing food. Had a starter and main course. Great portion sizes and quality food
Great food and service.
Although small Atithi has amazing food, had some Onion Bargies and a crab curry, some very unique dishes for vegans and meat eaters as well as perfect customer service.
Absolutely brilliant restaurant! Amazing service as well as a unique menu that other restaurants do not do. 10/10 reccomend
Great food. Good portions and amazing authentic food, highly recommend
An amazing restaurant, all the traditional meals but also the option to have them served in a Yorkshire pudding, and my absolute favourite, a Haggis tikka, you have to try it, its amazing.
What an amazing restaurant. We had a few days in York and saw this restaurant when we first arrived. We paid a visit on our last night and had the most amazing meal. The service was excellent, the food was amazing, I mean Haggis and Curry together! I would happily recommend this restaurant to everyone and will most definitely return on our next trip to York. Well done!
Really unique and delicious food. Would definitely visit again next time Im in York.
Fantastic food, all the curries tasted unique and delicious. Service was great and the decor inside is lovely too. Great little place would definitely return next time we’re in York.
Food is delicious. But the service is poor. I asked if I can have a non spicy curry or anything not spicy. After explaining I can’t eat spicy food they reassured me what I ordered “chickpeas and aubergine” wasn’t spicy. I could only eat 4 tablespoons because guess what? It was spicy. I am disappointed that they also didn’t ask if we wanted any more drinks or if the food was alright. Which wasn’t. I have lived in India (New Delhi) for a long period of time and the food in this restaurant was tasty, as you would in India, but more spicy than average. I don’t recommenced it. My partner ate the whole dinner and he took mine away for him.
Very good traditional Indian food. Im not a food critic nor an expert, but Ill tell you this its bloody tasty nosh.
Lovely food, great location and staff.Good range for Vegetarians, Vegans and Carnivores. Bar for alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.Food Id not tasted before, I was spoilt for choice. Arrived on my own and made welcome..Accessibility - three steps into the Restaurant. No disabled toilet.Bus stops near by. Walking distance of a range of hotels. #7 Park and Ride passes by.Toilets, but no disabled loo ( an old building).
I wouldn’t complain about the food but the service and the treatment to the customers are terrible. They told me they can’t service me another main course because I did not order them at the same time. (Never asked me to). When I told him that it’s my first time to your restaurant so I don’t know what’s the portions and if I like it, he answer me was “I’m not gonna prepare more anyway”. He said this publicly so I just paid and left off the place. (So insulting)With this kind of service, it’s better to stay away from this place!Going to report them to the consumer rights for sure next morning.
Fantastic place to have a meal. Food was delicious and staff was super friendly. 10 out of 10 and would highly recommend this place.
Good indian restairent
Great food.. Chef has created his own recipes, his twist to the indian recipes. Worth every penny.
Took half an hour between getting seated and our order being taken. We ordered poppadoms for a starter and we were half way through them before our drinks arrived which were only a lemonade and a Pepsi. Long wait for food after ordering which would have been fine if the food had been absolutely spot on. As it was the food was just okay. Not once in our two hour visit did we get asked if we wanted any more drinks and as we were finishing our mains the servers seemed to disappear altogether. Sat with plates in front of us for 15 minutes. Overall food was fine but service was pretty shocking. Expected more from such a small and well reviewed establishment.
Me and my friend came for dinner this evening and thought the food was amazing. The starters and curries were very tasty, I cant wait to come back :). Thank you for a lovely meal. I would highly recommend.
The Best Indian Restaurant in York...What a change and am amazing take on Indian food. The chef has really taken a huge amount of care in presenting this bold menu and the signature dishes are only available in this restaurant its that exclusive. I was little unsure of the food at first but was taken by surprise how the flavours come around. I dont live in York but if I was this would be my place to go for Indian food.Restaurant is well cosy and the staff are happy to help with the menu or any special requirement.A MUST VISIT.......
Excellent. Unusual Indian food. Good service. Baby friendly too.
I’m a regular customer at Masala Kraft and have introduced several friends to the restaurant over the past couple of years. We all agree it’s the best curry in York! The food is excellent with lots of interesting options on the menu and the service is always friendly.
If you love Indian food and you havent tried Atithi then you should. The atmospherep is good the service is friendly and attentive. The music is not too loud. The food is terrific, beautifully seasoned and spiced.
Food was lovely, spices nicely balanced offering an authentic Indian taste.
Great service and fantastic food for lovers of a more traditional taste.Despite being a busy Saturday night the staff were friendly and accommodating and Reddy and his staff were attentive to our needs. The food was fantastic too!Would definitely recommend for great variety and complex flavours.
Lucky enough !!We walked in at 6 pm for dinner to catch a show at barbican. We were lucky enough to get a table as restaurant was packed. We were in hurry, but are definitely going back again to enjoy awesome flavours and try out few unique dishes.
We had a really delicious meal at this lovely restaurant tonight. There was a wider and more interesting choice of vegetarian dishes compared to many Indian restaurants and each dish was beautifully cooked subtly flavoured and elegantly served by Defney, our waitress who was really friendly and attentive. We would definitely come again. Highly recommended!
Fabulous meal. Good price for great quality food!
Had a great curry here a couple of weeks ago, its nice to have food that did not have oil oozing out of it. Taste was great and no oil. If you try the same as you would elsewhere and compare you maybe disappointed, but every time I go to a new place I try something different. I had the chicken chorizo curry...
We had a lovely meal as a couple. The food was lovely not your average Indian food .Real flavour and knowledgeable service not rushed,Nice atmosphere. Dont expect your food to come out like mcdonalds, it taste freshly cooked. Go Sit Enjoy.
Spectacularly slow, but the food was worth the wait. Not sure if they were having problems in the kitchen as there was only four other people in the restaurant yet our meal took 3 hours. Tastiest Indian food Ive had in a while though.
Terrible customer service. I asked for my meal to be mild and it turned up spicy hot. After eating two mouthfuls I told the waiter and I was offered a glass of water. Over half an hour later I was then offered an alternative meal which I declined after losing my appetite and due to my mouth being on fire. I was refunded just half the cost of my meal which in my view was inconsiderate and stingy.
Very nice food. Only fault is they were out of lamb . But only fault we could find . Excellent 👌🏻
Really good food, reasonable but not cheap prices for the North. Everything was good but the cheddar cheese Nan was a little different. There Masala craft paneer, squid and fish curry was quite good.
I think Ive found my new favourite Indian resteraunt. Amar and the team did a fantastic job, the food is second to none. Despite the distance, Ill be making the journey back! 5 well deserved stars!!
Let’s not get carried away like the other reviews on here, this is a very average Indian Restaurant. I thought this was potentially a little hidden gem but the food was average and so was the service.
I’ve eaten at quite a few Moroccan restaurants in the past, but none were particularly memorable. So Tassili, at which I ate for the first time last night, was an unexpected and very welcome surprise. The couscous was absolutely fantastic – the best I’ve ever eaten. The meatballs were delicious as were the merguez sausages. We followed our fabulous mains with baklava and rose-water mint tea which were equally delightful.I feel it was excellent value for money at around £25 per head and the service was very friendly throughout. The meal was faultless in every respect. I really can’t praise them enough! Tassili is one of the best restaurants in York and I urge everyone to visit.
Just arrived in York and looking for a decent place to eat rather than expensive hotel food. This was a wonderful find. Ive recently been in New Delhi and can honestly say the food here matched anything I had over in India. Try it. You wont be disappointed
The place was amazing to look at, fine service but the food was just as if Id cooked it myself and tried to use meat out of a tin. It was really quite bad. Im really sorry to say this as the effort gone into it made it look like a nicely run family business but guys you really need to up the game food-wise. The food was bland basically and everything had bits of pepper in which my partner hates and wouldnt have ordered had it said that on the menu. Also the toilet was very poor with no hand dryer.
Superb, original, with a fabulous authentic menu and a terrific ambience. Its a tiny little place tucked away by a busy junction across from the Travelodge Central. Packed at 530pm and turning folks away! Chef accommodated our request for a selection of starters and when we didnt particularly care for one was courteous and professional enough to come out to the table👍 I cant recommend this place enough....Oh and the house dry white was fantastic 🥂
I picked this place to eat due to the high reviews however the food was way below a decent standard. I ordered a murgh makhani and it was tasteless. The chicken pieces were clearly frozen and hadnt been cooked properly. The lamb rajan josh was slightly better but still tasteless. The only decent/edible part of the meal was the naan.
Food was lovely, friendly helpful staff and good atmosphere, I would recommend a visit
I have just come back from a wonderful meal here with my family. We moved to York a year ago and have been trying many Indian restaurants to find our new regular. This one wins by a mile. Lovely staff and service, music not loud and food absolutely delicious. We had starters and mains and all were cooked perfectly. Not rushed out so you really felt they had been cooked fresh. This was evident in the taste too! Kebab, fish, chicken and paneer dishes delicious as well as an Indian take on haggis that my mum really enjoyed! Eyeing up the Yorkshire pudding for next time. The chef even came out to chat with us and talked with us about the dishes. We will definitely be coming back, thank you!!
Great food, very friendly staff. Would highly recommend!
Visited last week with family. Beautiful place with best quality food to eat. Variety of meat and veg food options as well as sea food.
Great flavours...with a twist. The Yorkshire pudding lamb kofta was very tasty, and the house lamb special (River Foss) incredibly tasty.Make sure you come to the right Masala Craft! Great service and very good food.
Food really great.Service excellent!
We had a really delicious dinner there today. Our waitres were very friendly! Highly recommended!
Good food. Great service. If anything, too attentive
The service was excellent but this is the first time we have eaten here as we could not get a table at The Garden of India round the corner. The food was very disappointing compared to the garden of India.
Nice and cosy atmosphere, tasty food, different dishes on menu. Worth a visit.
Only a quick passing visit to York unfortunately but glad we found this place based off of the good reviews, really friendly staff and the food was top. Will be back next time for sure.
Fantastic Indian dishes, far from the usual formula of choose a meat and add a sauce - carefully prepared and beautifully cooked plates of food served by knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. Absolutely the most unique, and the best, Indian restaurant in York.
Dreadful . Visited before a show at the Barbican and will never go again. Watery brown sludge with no taste and my partner asked for mild and got volcanic magma, horrible
An interesting and fascinating culinary experience! Unique and marvellous, a taste journey!
Friendly, welcoming and comfortable environment to enjoy a fantastic meal.. would highly recommend!
Great food and great service. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to anyone.
Very friendly, excellent customer service. Food was good and reasonably priced
Nice ambience, tasty food, great service.
Food is not at all good, simple Naan bread itself is pathetic....i would definitely not recommend anyone to visit this place....Here is the response to Atithi owners reply:-----------------------------------------------------------------------We are really surprised to see such a disrespectful reply from you.1)Firstly we had have ordered 8 Naans not for 3 persons but for 5 including 2 kids, that shows how attentive you are and not even noticing your customers.. If you had noticed, you could have found leftover Naans which we could not even eat.2) we agree that we asked for spicy recipe but as a good chef you need to make it spicy according to the menu or recipe. Like we ordered Choley Atithi and you had made it spicy with purely Black Pepper, Just FYI in any Choley recipe black pepper would never be used to spice up taste rather it would be always be spiced with green chilly or red chilly powder. Also we ordered Paneer Tikka Karahi Masala which was also horrible. It was having plain red gravy with Paneer in it. But actual recipe is such that it would have cubes of bell pepper, onions, tomatoes grilled which is added to the gravy.3) Thanks for your advise to have a hobby but NO THANKS. We dont need your advise..4) The comments you mentioned not to visit again shows your BAD hospitality and humanity.. Hope you know the meaning of Atithi, you should respect and respond to customer complaints/compliments.
Just had a beatiful meal. Myself, hubby and 13 year old daughter. Went around 10:00 pm and had a lovely quiet meal. Very friendly, helpful staff. It was a perfect end to a busy day. Chicken bhunas and chicken korma were delicious and looked like lots of other lovely dishes to choose from. Cant complain about anything. Dont usually write reviews but cant not tonight!!
Great meals and garlic naam. Good to combinate.
Great curry, authentic cooking. Excellent
We ate here this evening Food was beautiful had the lamb Madras . service was excellent. Definitely will be back :)
There are two Indian restaurants with a similar name. I believe reviews get muddled as this restaurant certainly does not meet the standard I was expecting. We were sat near the drafty door despite other tables being available. There was a long wait for the order to be taken and even longer for the food. The food was mediocre at best. Not a welcoming place at all.
Great place to eat with fantastic food and good prices. Great staff with even the chef coming out to make sure everything is okay.chicken tika massala was best I have had with a great unique taste.
Amazing food and if you are in the area I highly recommend you taste the delicious food in this cosy restaurant! Seasoning on point and is traditional indian food WITHOUT an english twist!
Working nearby, I can often smell the chefs prepping here and Ive eaten a few times before (onion bhajis are on another level).Firstly, the popadum dips were top, top notch. Especially mango chutney and mint yoghurt. None were watered down at all, which is a refreshing change.Mains-wise is where its unexpected and rewarding in that you can tell the dishes are made in a more traditional, home-made way. This isnt what Ive experienced in many similar restaurants - which may be serving Anglicised versions of dishes - but here, the food was complex and you can tell its more traditional and so makes for a different experience. Thanks to Reddy and the staff for the strong service despite being busy and brave menu with unusual options (enjoyed chorizo chicken curry on this occasion)
Really tasty, fresh food and friendly service.
Lovely food but service let it down badly staff have no customer service skills at all
Despite being first customers of the evening, there was a long delay between ordering & receiving our food. Unfortunately the food was very bland & meat limited to a few small pieces. Theres plenty of other Indian restaurants in York so theres no need to go back.....
Great music collection and food and service needs more effort
Home cooking Indian style....delicious food
Food was fantastic a big thank to Reddy for looking after us. The service was top class.
