Aali Masjid (or Ali Mosque) is a mosque located in the Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir. It was constructed in 1471 A.D.,during the reign of Shamiri king Sultan Hassan Shah. The structure is the largest existing historic mosque constructed within the premises of Eidgah Srinagar. It is also the second largest mosque in the Kashmir Valley after the Jamia Masjid, also located in Srinagar.[1] The building shows a unique synthesis between Central Asian and local traditions of wooden architecture. The mosque is based on a 4m×4m grid supported on 5m tall 151 wooden columns of 0.95m girth. The main hall on the ground floor measuring 61.2m×20.5m consists of 75 such modules. All 151 deodar columns are rested on carved stone pedestals with varying designs. The overall area of the mosque is 1844sq.m
Ali Musjid was Constructed in 1471 AD during the reign of Shahmir King of Kashmir Sultan Hassan Shah. The building was substantially renovated by Mughal Governor of Kashmir Ali Mardan Khan during 1650-57 and during the Year 1664 the Ali Musjid was Expanded in the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. But unfortunately during the year 1801 the Musjid Caught Fire and the structure was damaged but was reconstructed by prominent Afghani Noble Sardar Gul Mohammad Khan in 1935 under the supervision of British Officer Sir John Marshal. This inscription is writing on the Marble Stone at the enterence of Ali Musjid
A marvel in our ocean of monuments. The mosque despite being second largest mosque of the valley is clearly showing the signs of negligence. You clearly see the plaster showing the signs of decadence inside due to moisture.
Aali Masjid: Constructed in 1395 by Sultan Ali Shah (Zainul Abideens elder brother), the seventh Sultan of Kashmir. Mir Ali Shah Hamdani is believed to have bought the land and bestowed it on Ali Shah. However, some historians believe that it was constructed in 1471 by Sultan Hassan Shah (as is mentioned on the history board outside the mosque, pic below). It is the second biggest mosque in Kashmir after Jamia Masjid. It is a hypostyle mosque, the style which first emerged in Iraq and dominated the world after 715 CE.Aali Masjid is known for its unique architecture, the frontage of the mosque is made of two Deodar columns with bases carved of stone, which lead into the main hall. As you enter the mosque the hall is supported by 156 (15 feet) Deodar columns, six stepped pulpit made of Devri stone and wooden Pinjrakari work. The hall measures 20x 67 m consisting of 12 x 12ft units (bound by Deodar columns) forming a grid like pattern. The mosque was worked upon and renovated many times and once by Mughal Governor and architect Ali Mardan Khan. {Either named after Ali Mardan Khan (popular opinion) or Sultan Ali Shah}The Chinars in the forecourt, that lead to the mosque entrance are thought to have been planted by Islam Khan (1664) who had been governor of Jahangir, Islam Khan also covered the original Deodar columns in masonary walls.During Afghan period it caught fire and was gutted down. It was rebulit in 1801 by famous Afgan Governor Sardar Gul Mohammad KhanThe traditional birch bark roof of the mosque was changed to three tire CGI roof under the supervision of Mirwaiz Kashmir, Moulana Yousuf. The mosque served as a prominent platform for the freedom struggle during the Dogra rule in the early part of the 20th CenturyUnfortuantely not a lot has been written on the mosque, its history or architechture. I could just find a few paragraphs in a book called Srinagar: An architectural legacy by Fesial Alkazi.Today the mosque is surrounded by open land on three sides, with Idgah towards South and Ali Jan road and an Army Bunker on its east.During 80s and 90s the mosque believed to be haunted by many. Even today many people are scared to offer prayers in there, however, the mosque remains a symbol of cultural, spiritual and political heritage of Kashmir.
Aali Masjid was constructed in 1395 by Sultan Ali Shah, the seventh Sultan of KashmirAt the far end of Eidgah in Srinagar, basking in sunlight often interrupted by cool shade of mighty chinars, stands Aali Masjid, a mute spectator to history of six centuries of Kashmir. Termed as the second biggest mosque in Srinagar, the Aali Masjid is known for its unique architecture, 156 deodar columns, six stepped pulpit made of devri stone and wooden pinjrakari work. The mosque has gone through the phases of destruction and rebuilding during its 624 years of existence. However, at present the mosque is confronted with new challenges causing it to slowly lose its sheen. The insensitive interventions undertaken by the local mosque committee has played havoc with its aesthetic value. Together with lack of maintenance and attempts to grab the prized land, the historical place is in grave danger.
