This is educative for childrens. I like it very much. This impressive museum is located in a striking angular structure that resembles a volcano. Exhibits dedicated to Merapi include a scale model, which demonstrates eruptions from the 18th century until today and how they altered the mountains shape. There are vintage seismometers on display, along with a motorbike excavated from molten ash. Theres an earthquake simulator, a cinema screening the story of the 2010 eruption (10,000Rp) and profiles covering volcanoes of Indonesia and the world.
The shape of the building is iconic. The museum is very educative. I spent more than an hour here just to explore the museum and read every caption. The installations are very interesting and some of them are interactive. They have some relicts from 2010s eruption of Mt. Merapi. This place is very recommended to you who visit Jogja, especially for students.
A place you can commemorate and honor all things that happened
Mount Merapi museum is located on Jalan Kaliurang banteng hargobinangun Pakem Sleman Yogyakarta, presenting a lot of relics from the ancient times when the volcano erupted. This place is very suitable if visited for school children and students to see what items were once there. Mount Merapi I really like to visit the Mount Merapi Museum because I can see historical items.
Negative: The building is old and a bit shabby, with water leaks and mold and broken walls. Also, the information wasn’t much updated since 2006 eruption.Positive: a lot of information, interactive volcanoes maps and models, samples of rocks, pyroclastic flows and volcanic material. For a volcano freak like me it was awesome!
Excellent interactive activities. Both Indonesian and English information. Fun and very educational at the same time
Government owned museum located at the foot of Mount Merapi that depicts the mountains history.Easy access to go here if you just follow your map application. Definitely wont miss it since it is very huge with a high triangular roof. Parking lot is super wide, enough for big buses too (they charge you for parking, unfortunately). A good venue for school or even company visit.Ticket is super affordable (5k) but I hope they can raise the fee for maintenance since some of the sections are closed due to roof leaking. Even some of the roof tiles are slipping (maybe this caused the leaking!). Some sections are poorly lit so a bit hard to read the information especially on the second floor.Education wise, it is the best place to learn about Mount Merapis history especially after the deathly eruption back in 2010. I suggest buying the ticket for the cinema as well (5k) to learn more. The museum depicts the Merapi from its latest eruption with some exhibition of ruined things that belongs to the local villages. Then you can see the exhibition that tells more about its previous eruptions dates back to before the countrys independence. Other sections depict the Ring of Fire around the world, local legend about Merapi & Yogyakarta, tools used to study the mountain from past and many interactive displays that will attract kids. The spinning globe is a must see, the huge Merapi replica at the lobby is the best photo spot.During weekends, they have in house gamelan & sinden singer that will accompany during the visit.A must see is the movie. Come at least 10 minutes before the time starts to ensure good sitting. Since they keep selling the cinema ticket even though its full house. The cinema is on the second floor, has cozy sitting for around 100 people & large screen. Unfortunately, the movie is very poor audio wise. It still explains about Merapi very well, though.Tips:Avoid crowd, dont come during long weekend or holiday season. If you do, come early.A good place to chill after being under the sun in other tourists attractions.Buy the cinema ticket & be early to arrive at the cinema.
A great museum to visit with family and children to educate history of Gunung Merapi eruption which cost only Rp 5,000 for ticket. After entry gate, you will face Merapi miniature with eruption simulation. Choose year of eruption, push the button then you will see eruption type of Merapi. This museum explains not only history of eruption but also documentations of Merapi research and monitoring by volcano expert. There is also mystical history about Merapi.
Entrance fee is 10,000rp for foreigners. Not a expensive museum and quite interesting but it’s really a shame that it’s not well maintained. On the ground floor some panel with lights are not working anymore. On the second floor you can see that there are a lot of leaking in the rooftop and humidity already started damaging the walls.
Located close to the landmarks Merapi, so can visit both destination in the same day. It has spacious parking area. Quite crowded in holiday season. The has many information about volcanology, eruption, mitigation and the history. Some remaining material from big Merapi eruption in 2010. Ticket is IDR 10,000 including 40 minutes cinema.
Merapi Volcano Museum is a great exposition of the importance and the impact of Mt. Merapi to Yogyakarta! It has all the interactive modules and rooms that will provide you the right and essential information to understand how Yogyakarta, and Indonesia, responds and treats disasters. From videos, to sculptures, and eveb mythologies, the museum offers it all. Perhaps my most favorite part is the central model in the lobby of the mountain itself. The rock samples were also fascinating. To make the experience more impactful, get a tour guide and if you are lucky, get a geologist friend who speaks the language.Unfortunately, parts of the museum show disrepair. Mold has creeped into the fiberboard ceiling and some part have decated already. They also need to update their toilets. Although they have a souvenir shop, it is better if it can have its own store so it is more noticeable. I really hope they have future plans to renovate and modernise the facility! We dont want another eruption for them to revive their drive for risk education and communication!
Went here on Sunday 21 February 2021.I tried to call the number found on Google before going to the museum and no one picked it up.Since the Google says its only closed on Monday, so I still made a trip to go here. Its disappointing that this place is closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.I was complaining on the wrong information stated on Google. The security said that Google isnt updated and many people had been fooled by that information. Its disappointing because they should have put the updated information. So next time you wanna visit this place, please just call them to make sure if theyre open.
The place has a lot of information about merapi vulcanic mountain, its very detail, and you can also watch movie about merapi eruption in 2010, the movie tells you about how to evacuate your self, how to predict when the mountain will erupted, and much more. Amazingly its only cost 5k for Domestic tourists to watch the movie. Come and visit this place!!! 👍😁👍
Such a big place, large parking area, cheap tickets, but it was so quite. Actually the contents are interesting, especially the 2010 eruptions displays, but maybe they need an innovations to attract more visitors.
If you want to know more about Merapi volcano, you need to come to this place.
Love this place to know about Merapi Volcano. Its also near Kaliurang observatory post.
The place is a good repository for knowledge on volcanoes, not only Merapi but also volcanoes in other parts of the world.

Well maintained museum, clean, informative panels, variety displays including videos, info graphics, they also have a large volcano display placed on the center of interest. There some roof that need to concern. They also have movies played on cinema room. Some places were torn and leak when hard rain comes.

Its a heartwarming museum! Perfect place to bring your kids and family.
It was a great stop! Amazing collection of art, objects and stones relating to Merapi volcanos eruption and history. There was a theater showing us the documentary of Merapi 😀
Very suitable and educative for children and even adult. The most interesting is their movie theatre and (if not mistaken) real volcanic remain, including volcanic ashes and ash cloud-exposed properties. They put display of how volcanic mountain works, history, type, and so much more, it wouldnt be enough to be explored in 1 hour. No photograph allowed inside the museum. But you can take pics outside obviously. Somehow is crowded but well, it make sense.
Nice place for family vacation...also its education holiday for kids
In this place you can see the rest of eruption impact such as ruin local house, melted television, broken chinese ware, and etc. How do you get here? The way to get here you should hire jeep or you can walking here.
Educating place and gives a knowledge about one of the most active volcano in Indonesia.
Puaaaaaas... Recommended for family tour... Seru lagi...

A good place but need more attention and maintenance from the management that under regional government of Sleman. Level 2 is dark and dirty. The visual display is closed because of the tools is broken (the officer said).
ESDM made it in big space, good presentation, great technology. But, Sleman regional government as Maintenance, operational Management should do their job on this place! Bad maintenance and many facilities are broken down.. feel so sorry!
