Sira fort also known as kasturi rangappa nayaka fort is a perfectly squared plan.It has huge thick walls with guard posts on all four sides. It is located next to a lake that feeds the moat, that surrounds the fort. only the fort walls are left standing, while all the structures inside the fort have crumbled to ground with time. There are no staff or gaurds to maintain the fort. There are no Information plaques explaining the forts history. The fort is exactly like an abandoned structure with a little patch work.

The fort, made of stone and bricks, is spread over an area of 197.5 acres (79.9 ha) and has many historic monuments which need to be conserved. The fort was enclosed by a moat and a well-made glacis also formed part of the fortifications.

The historical land fort is having good fortification, bastion, water ponds, temples and many monuments. This beautiful fort is named after the ‘Nayaka’ ruler. It is symbolic of the hold the Nayaka community rulers once had on Sira. Sira was politically and militarily an important region of south India prior to the British Raj. Sira Province was ruled by the Bijapur Kings from 1638 to 1687. The Suba or Province of Sira of the Mughal Empire with its capital at Sira town lasted from 1687 to 1757. The Marathas wrested the province from Mughals and held it from 1757 to 1759, when the Mughals regained it. In 1761, Haidar Ali whose father Sheikh Fateh Mohammed occupied an important position in the local Mughal Army declared his independence from the Mughal Empire and declared himself the ‘Nawab’ of the province. He called himself ‘Nawab Haider Ali Bahadur’ but lost the province to the Marathas from 1766 until 1774 when his son Tipu Sultan, captured it for him.

Is believed that Sira town was founded by Rangappa Nayaka of Ratnagiri (in present day Andhra Pradesh). The town was known as Siriya back then. It is also believed that the fort was originally built by Rangappa. It seems when Tipu took over the fort was strengthened with the help of French engineers. The design of the bastions is quite similar to other forts under Tipu such as Bellary, Koppal, Baahadhur Banda, Gudibande, etc.Walls and bastions have survived several centuries with some damages. The wall in the foreground is the curtain wall for the main entrance. The wall in the background is part of the security complex. View of the moat and outer-wall which also acts as a retaining wall for the moat. As you see, the moat is not a simple pit, the walls are lined with dressed blocks. A purpose built pit designed to survive forces of nature.
