Vaikunda Ekadasi is one of the important festivals held at the Perumal temples. The festival is held in the month of March every year. All the Perumal temples, including the Alagirinatha Sami temple, popularly known as Kottai Perumal in the Salem metropolis, were critically acclaimed yesterday morning.The Vaikunda Ekadasi festival has been held at the Salem Fort Perumal Temple since last 7th. The main event of the festival, the opening of the gates of heaven, took place early yesterday morning. Earlier, special decorations were made for the festival idols of Perumal, Sridevi and Bhudevi.This was followed by Tirupavai songs and special pujas. The gates of heaven were opened at 5 oclock in the morning. Sridevi, along with Bhudevi, was brought by Perumal through the gate of heaven called ‘Paramapatha Vasal’. Devotees gathered there chanted Govinda, Govinda with devotional ecstasy.After coming through the gates of heaven and blessing the devotees, Perumal went back through the east gate of the temple and got up in the festival hall. Special pujas were held there.Sridevi and Bhudevi were specially decorated for Perumal in the glass house before the ceremony. In the temple, Moolavar Alagirinathar, Sundaravalli Thayar, Andal, Anjaneyar, Karutadhwar, Krishna and Vishnu Durga shrines were decorated with golden armor and poojas were held.Thousands of devotees came to the temple early in the morning despite the bitter cold to see the gates of heaven open. Devotees not only from Salem but also from different parts of the district came from early morning till night to witness the festival. They stood in a long line and watched the procession. Special arrangements were made for Sami darshan for the disabled and the elderly.Ahead of the ceremony, heavy police security was put in place under the supervision of Salem Municipal Deputy Commissioner of Police Thangathurai. Panneerselvam MP, Venkatachalam MLA at the Heaven Gate event. And many of the temple administrators attended.Following the opening ceremony of the Heavens Gate, the Rappattu festival started at the temple. During this festival which lasts for 10 days, there is a wake-up call at 8 pm every night at the Perumal Thirumamani Mandapam, the recitation of the Tirumozhi Veda and the devotional browsing festival.Sugarcane shops were set up near the temple to mark the opening of the Paradise Gate of Fort Perumal Temple. Among them sugarcane sales were overwhelming.
