Special edifice for the Catholic Church in Rome
Interesting place. Started as a villa during the Empire. Donated to the church by the owner, named Lateran. Not sure how much of the ancient structure remains. Unfortunately, they no longer allow visits inside.
Fabulous place of prayers
Today is the feast day of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, mother of all the churches in the City and in the world. The Lateran Palace is part of the whole complex and today is the Curia of the Diocese of Rome. In a certain sense it is my home since I belong to the roman clergy. Welcome! (Since the structure is practically made up of diocesan offices it is not normally open for tourists and visitors.)

Holds the flight of 28 steps brought back by Emperor Constantines mother from residence of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. Jesus believed to walk up these steps to his trial and judgement.

Ancient papal palace and seat of the Lateran museum. The majestic facade enriched by the magnificent pontifical portal of Pope Sixtus V. is striking.The frame is one of the most spectacular, with the Loggia of blessings next to it and the Baptistery on its right.The Egyptian obelisk erected by the Emperor Constantine in the north corner makes the context even more solemn.Not to be missed.
The Apostolic Palace at the Lateran was the official residence of the popes from the first half of the fourth century until the transfer to Avignon, decided by Clement V. The Lateran residence, after the return of the popes to Rome with Gregory XI (1371-1378), did not it was more accessible so the pope chose to stay in the Apostolic Palace begun to be built on the Vatican hill by Innocent XI (1198-1216) and enlarged and embellished by Niccolò III (1277-1280).

The Lateran palace is part of a larger complex which also includes the basilica, the baptistery, the remains of the medieval papal palace with the holy staircase and the papal chapel called Sancta Sanctorum.Near the palace, next to the Holy Stairs, there is the Leonine triclinium and in the square in front of it stands the Lateran obelisk, the largest of the obelisks in Rome.The area occupied today by the palace as early as the 4th century was the main residence of the popes. The Fortified Lateran complex created a citadel around the papal palace, including the cathedral and the baptistery, and started from the Asinaria gate and the Aurelian walls, ending with the castrum of the Santi quattro coronati, where the popes took refuge in case of danger.
When I have tourists, especially Romans, I tend to come here to the Lateran area to visit the whole complex (especially the basilica and baptistery). The Lateran Palace is not easy to visit with a tour, but regardless of this I can assure you that the best thing to know is the historical value of this building: despite the presence, especially externally, of the forms of the sixteenth-century restorations, the palace is a living witness of the presence of the Popes in Rome.Just think that here Pope Sylvester, who according to tradition baptized Constantine in the 4th century AD, came to live with all his renewed court and spiritual dignity. Here, in the rooms belonging to buildings of the imperial family, the political nucleus of the Church of Rome was born.The popes therefore lived and always lived here, since the fourth century, in that place that, for centuries, was called Patriarchium. We have nothing of the ancient residence except the splendid mosaic of the nearby Triclinium Leoninum, a residence that rivaled the ancient imperial residences on the Palatine.When the popes then left the area to go to the Vatican the whole area was, I repeat, partly abandoned. In the sixteenth century the entire area was affected by heavy restoration and reconstruction work by the architect Domenico Fontana on the initiative and commission of Sixtus V (Pope from 1585 to 1590). Despite this, however, it must be said that the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is still considered the official seat of the Bishop of Rome (and therefore of the Pope), and that the close relationship between the cult building and the palatial one anticipated the custom Renaissance to insert churches or basilicas inside monumental buildings (think of Palazzo della Cancelleria or Palazzo Venezia).

I have been to the Lateran Palace to testify as a specialist for a marriage annulment request. The courtrooms of the Sacra Rota are modern rooms. The staircase is wonderful and full of frescoes. The cloister goes back to the times of the Renaissance. It was a nice experience

The Lateran Palace, built by destroying the Constantinian Patriarch, is an ancient palace whose history dates back to imperial Rome and which was the Papal See and official residence of the Roman Pontiffs for more than a thousand years, until Pope Benedict XI (1303-1304) . It is adjacent to the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the cathedral of Rome as it contains the Holy See or Roman Cathedra. The Lateran Palace now houses the Papal State Historical Museum, the offices of the Vicariate of Rome and the Apartment of the Cardinal Vicar of His Holiness for Rome and the District. The Lateran Palace, together with the basilica and other adjacent buildings, enjoys the right of extraterritoriality, being under the full and exclusive jurisdiction of the Holy See. It is part of a larger complex which also includes the Basilica, the Baptistery, the remains of the medieval Papal Palace with the Scala Santa and the Papal Chapel called Sancta Sanctorum. It is the seat of the Vicariate. Majestic court, imposing entrance, frescoed ceilings on the outside. Large spaces inside. Sober but very well organized offices. Great cleanliness and friendliness of the people who work there.
Built on the ancient Patriarch (papal residence from Constantine until the captivity of Avignon 1305), devastated by the fire of 1308, the Lateran Palace was ordered in 1586 by Sixtus V to Domenico Fontana, who was inspired by the Palazzo Farnese. For the different proportions and for the monotonous theory of equal windows on the three facades it does not stand up to comparison. The Lateran Museums housed there are very interesting and rich.
It is home to several offices of the Vicariate but before that, in ancient times it was the seat of the Pontiff. There are beautiful frescoes and the architecture of the building is remarkable. You should visit especially the second floor. Unfortunately it is not open to all visitors
The Lateran Palace stands on the site of the ancient Patriarch, residence of the pontiffs of the age of Constantine, destroyed by fire in 1308. After centuries of degradation, it was rebuilt by Domenico Fontana between 1586 and 1589 at the behest of Pope Sixtus V, to be used as a summer residence for the papal court. At the new building, however, the pontiffs preferred the Vatican and the Quirinal, and the Lateran Palace had different uses in the centuries.It was in fact used as a hospital, as a hospice, as an archive of the Papal State and in 1838 at the Gregorian Museum, established by Gregory XVI. In 1960 Pope John XXIII transferred the museum to the Vatican, assigning the palace to the seat of the Vicariate, after major restoration and rehabilitation works completed in 1967. Since 1987 the main floor is the seat of the Vatican Historical Museum. The building, inspired by Palazzo Farnese, although built in more severe forms typical of the period of the Counter-Reformation, is rectangular in plan and has three facades (the fourth is set against the right side of the Basilica of S. Giovanni in Laterano). On each of these is a large portal with smooth obducted columns, with a balcony above. Two of these balconies have the coat of arms of Pope Sisto V Peretti (1585-1590), while the third one of Clemente XII Corsini (1730-1740). On the ground floor, on all sides are large architraved windows with grilles and windows below; on the first and second floor windows with alternating curved and triangular gables. At the summit is a loggia belvedere with columns. Inside is a courtyard surrounded by a porch with three orders overlapping. A monumental staircase leads to the papal apartment, consisting of ten rooms and a chapel; the latter preserves frescoes depicting the enterprises of the pontificate of Sixtus V, while in the halls are episodes of the history of imperial and Christian Rome and episodes of the Old and New Testaments. On 11 February 1929 the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and the Italian State were signed in the Sala della Conciliazione. Since then, the building is an integral part of the Vatican City State and enjoys extraterritorial privileges.

This building is an integral part of the Basilica, the structure is a large quadrilateral spread over four floors. It houses the offices of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal, the offices for the support of the clergy, the accounting offices of the churches of Rome that each year have to bring the budgets and lastly on the ground floor, the legal office of the Vicariate.

The palace is not open to the public. Only the porch with its beautifully decorated ceiling is accessible.
For us, this place is exceptional. Anyone who has visited Rome and was lucky enough to visit all of Romes greatest basilicas will say that each basilica has its own distinctive charisma. I look forward to wandering through the basilica and especially the Basilica of St. John because of its distinctive architecture. In every such basilica I will spend a lot of time, because there is a beautiful art of the masters of that time. Sit in this basilica, and look at the altar, vault, choir, decoration and tiles, close your eyes and imagine how these beautiful works were done by stone masons from a piece of stone. Fantastic ...
