Ghantakarna (Ghandiyal) deity is revered throughout India. An ardent devotee of Mahadev-Shiva, and Kshetrapala of Shri Badrinathji, Ghantakarna was born in the demon clan due to which his body was filled with vengeful qualities but he did not like this demonic body and vowed to abandon it. In devotion to Lord Shiva, Delve into Ghantakarna kept bells hanging in both his ears as he did not want to hear the name of anyone other than Mahadev, but if he heard anything else, he would immediately shake his head, The bells rang and he would not have to listen to any other mention. Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared to him and asked him to ask for a boon, Ghantakarna asked for the boon of changing his vengeful body. Mahadev-Shiva told him that only Lord Vishnu can do this work, who is ruling in Dwarka as Shri Krishna nowadays. He went to Dwarka where he came to know that Sri Krishna is doing penance at Badrikashram on the Himalayas. He went there and started chanting Narayana-Narayana loudly in front of Shri Krishna. Sri Krishna rose up from meditation and fulfilled the desire of Ghantakarna, gave him the form of a deity and appointed him the Kshetrapala of Badrikashram. Presently the name of Badrikashram is called Badrinath and in all the mountains, the deity of Ghantakarna is known as Ghandiyal Devta.
