Loved this fort. The historic architecture of Delhi Sultanate attracts you a bit but not as the Mughals do.Its very close to the Islamabad expressway in rawat. 10 minutes max drive from main Islamabad expressway.Among the many forgotten relics spread across the dry and arid land of Potohar Plateau is the Rawat Fort, which lies about 18km east of Rawalpindi on G.T. Road. The etymology of the word ‘Rawat’ is said to trace back to the Arabic word ‘rebaat’ which mean ‘sarai’ in Urdu – a roadside inn for travellers. Contemporary historians have also concluded that the building’s design resembles a sarai rather than a fort. Historically, many of these roadside inns lined the G.T. Road and were used by invaders from Central Asia and Afghanistan. According to traditions, Rawat Fort was built by the Ghakkar tribe in 16th century. The region is also said to have been the battleground between the Ghakkar chief Sultan Sarang Khan and Sher Shah Suri in 1546 AD. The central courtyard of the fort contains ruined graves, that supposedly belong to the tribal chief and his two sons, who died fighting Sher Shah Suri. The two main entrances open to the east and the west. The walls of the fort are lined with small rooms, perhaps rented out to travellers. A quadrangular building, resembling a baradari, can also be found within the fort, along with a mosque. However, the original shape of the fort has been modified several times as it has gone under renovation and maintenance.
One of the best historical place in surrounding of Islamabad. The fort was founded as a caravanserai in the 15th century by the Delhi Sultanate, though the caravan itself may have been built atop a Ghaznavid-era fort that was established in 1036 CE. The caravanserai was then later fortified in the 16th century by the local Gakhar – warrior clan loyal to the Mughal emperor Humayun in order to defend the Pothohar plateau from Sher Shah Suris forces. The fort was the scene of a battle between the Gakhar chief Sultan Sarang and Afghan king Sher Shah Suri in 1546. Sultan Sarang was captured, tortured, and then executed at the fort by the forces of Sher Shah Suri, and then buried at the fort.
It is a small but beautiful historical fort, with stone walls and stone buildings, hidden behind the buildings on the main GT road Rawat. It has a car park and a small entrance fee. Once inside, you can quickly check out all the area within half an hour. However, the most disappointing part is that this fort lacks proper maintenance and has not enough historical description for visitors. Visitors dont get to know the history of these buildings or graves. Hopefully, the govt will focus more on developing this fort.
They are trying to preserve this old stopover of Sheh Shah Suri , graves as old as 15th Century . Nice place to visit and lost in history. The fort was built in the 10th Century. Locals told me since PTI government came in, for the first time in Pakistans history, government is trying to repair and preserve this asset
An ancient historical place worth seeing for people who have some interest in old civilisations . The fort needs little improvement in maintenance and briefing the visitors.
Its a amazing historical place but it is not well maintained but maintains work at progressed there is no proper parking area and your car will most likely be parked on the road. I dont suggest taking small babies or kids to this fort or even elderly people because there are no facilities such as restrooms and seating arrangements but over all it is great for photography and sightseeing
It was really nice to go there 🙂 I saw history....RICH HISTORY... If you are interested in old history, then you visit that place 🥰🥰🤗💘💫💘🤗
There is a lot of vegetation I give you that, this fort has been left to sit out dry awaiting much desired investment and care. If due attention is not given, there wont anything be left from 16th century at Rawat.
Rawat hai 500KV plant
Unique Plastic Bottles manufacturer rawat
This place was good but this need very care and maintenance.
Loving the atmosphere here. Glad to see some reconstruction work happening. Its a little dirty, there needs to be a lot of cleaning done, especially trimming of long grass and dusty patches but regardless its comparatively quite clean.Met one of the assistant curators and they mentioned that theres been a lot of excavation done and have found more skeletons of buried sons of the Khan who presided here.

Rawat Fort (Urdu: قلعہ روات) is an early 16th century fort in the Pothohar plateau of Pakistan, near the city of Rawalpindi in the province of Punjab. The fort was built to defend the Pothohar plateau from the forces of the Pashtun king Sher Shah Suri.
Its our heritage and now the Government is preserving this heritage as a national heritage for the tourists coming from all over the world

This fort is near to GT road and easy to visit
It was famous as a historical place. But the governments decision to build a mosque took four months. Due to this excellent decision, the government has started repair work. And a huge budget was allocated for the repair of Rawat Fort. Work on which has started. Simultaneously, repair of graves is also underway. Due to which the life of this dilapidated building will be doubled. Due to this ongoing charity work of the government, every special and ordinary person will be rewarded with sincerity in the process of repairing it. Nowadays, preaching parties are also being formed there. Recently, a group of Muftis was formed from Karachi in Tehri and two brothers also attended the Nusrat of the Jamaat. The heart was also relieved and rewarded. May Allah give everyone the courage to visit this place.Amen and Summa Amen. 🤲
A historical place. It should be renovated to attract the visitors.
Thats a historical must visiting place for history lovers. When i visited, the process of refurbishment was stared. They were building boundary wall of fort. Lots of thing were being changed. The tomb stone was renamed. The fort was founded as a caravanserai in the 15th century by Salteen-e-Dehli, though the caravan itself may have been built atop a Ghaznavid-era fort that was established in 1036 CE.
A barren land in the use of local residents as they offer prayer in the Masjid. No historical look left behind
An amazing historical place
Its an awesome place and the Fort gives an insight into the history of Indo Pak. The Fort is a master piece of architecture built by Gakhars who were the early rulers of rawalpindi to contain the attacks of Sher Shah Suri

Heritage grade attraction. Located at GT Road. Restoration direly required. Reveals the golden period when area from Jhelum to Attock and Kashmir was ruled by one Gakhar in year 1500 onwards.
You can visit easily because easy approach from GT road
Good place
Heritage. Of. Pakistan. Oldest. Thing. NYC. And. Historical place. Must vist. Old is gold.
Nice fort in rawat
Rawat Fort is a historical place and it is the symbol of Gakhars bravery.
Nice historical place, everyone must visit to enjoy the history physical
Its wall and gate seems to be marvels of architecture. I have no idea about the mosque inside. Whether it was the part of the original fort or whether it was a smaller mosque as part of the original fort or whether the main fort structure was later on converted into a bigger mosque. That needs some historical research. But otherwise one should visit it in morning hours before prayer times as during prayer times people are offering prayer and movement of people going on.It is not a picnic spot just that if you have interests in forts and architecture then you can go and look around the different remains of the fort.Gives quite a good feeling to have such a fort near Rawalpindi.Access is too easy. Its on the road side within 500 meters of GT Road. If you are coming from Lahore then its just a little slide off the road. If going from RWP side you have to take the service road type smaller road along the GT ROAD on the western side.

Neglected by Government.
It should be declared as heritage and look after this place
Beautiful historical place
Wonderful place to visit ❤
Once it was a grand architecture but now encroached and at decaying.
Its good place to know about your History
Beautful
Hidden jewel at the end of Rawat Bazar and neighborhood. A relic to our history and takes you back into the days gone by. The fort could have been preserved and advertised more for people to visit. The restoration effort has been substandard and has actually replaced some of the original boundary walls with the modern day cheap cement and brick work. But leaving aside the well known short comings of government, the place is still worth visiting and especially taking kids. Much healthier and thought provoking activity than stuffing mouths in a resturant.
Clean and clear rooms
Unlike rohtas fort this fort is quite small in size. Restoration work is underway.
