Long long ago Markandeya Rsi did austerities in the bank of this tank in the Lord Siva temple by the advice of his mother. Markandeya Rsi was granted only 7years of life so he took the shelter of Lord Siva,so when Jamaraja came to take him Markandya Rsi, Lord Siva came out of the Linga and asked Jsmaraj to go away. Still today one can see the broken linga in the temple.
