A light and music show is conducted every day showing history of Peshwas. The palace was the seat of Peshwa power and later was destroyed by a fire in 1828. Shaniwar Wada in Pune is a historical site of Peshwas. Shaniwar Wada is the only witness to the greatness and glory of Bajirao Peshwa and his heirs. It would be surprising to read that it cost only sixteen thousand rupees to build such a large fort at that time. Mastani, the second wife of Bajirao Peshwa, lived in this palace.

The construction of this palace of the Peshwas was started on a Saturday and hence the name (Saturday is Shaniwar in Hindi). This 13-storey building was started in 1730 by Bajirao I and was finally made ready in 1732. Security was given prime importance here, with nine bastions and five gateways (Dilli darwaza, Mastani darwaza, Khidki darwaza, Ganesh darwaza and Narayan darwaza). This fort was the center of Indian politics in the 18th century; the change in its status came at the heels of the rise of the Maratha empire. The fort itself was partially destroyed in a fire in 1828; whichever structures remained are now promoted for tourism. An unmissable site for tourists is the lotus-shaped fountain in the complex of the fort.

Shaniwar wada is 18th century fort and has historical importance. Bajirao mastani legacy can be seen here. This fort is well maintained. Located in the busy lanes of Budhwar peth of Pune. Parking is available just outside the Fort. But its better if you go by Cab. Avoid going during peak sun as it becomes very hot. You need to buy entry ticket to visit inside. Washrooms available and enjoy good view of city culture. Study the importance of this place before visiting to get connected. Shaniwar wada is just walkable from Dagduseth temple. Good place for photography lovers. This palace was built by first Bajirao Peshwas in 18th century. Now we can see the ruins of the palace. This is very big palace and built just like fort. People say the it was 7 storey building. But now we can see only ground floor. We can see some ruins of the interiors inside. In front of the wada, we can see very nice statue of first Bajirao Peshwa. Also we can see nice fountain in front of statue. Inside the wada we can see ruins of fountain, horses place, Nagarkhana (where music was sang when some one royal comes in or some victory is made in war etc.). We can also walk on the wall which has several places where soldiers can take position and attack on outside enemy. There are places where canons were placed to fight. This palace was not just to stay but it has seen many wars during the Peshwas ruling. It has seen many victories as well as losses in wars like major war in Panipat which is historical. You may reach the wada from Pune railway station but more convenient is Shivajinagar railway station from where every 5 minutes there are buses passing by the wada and bus stop is closer to entry.Shaniwarwada is arguably the topmost attraction of Pune City.Pune is considered cultural capital of Maharashtra. Peshwas - the Prime Ministers of Shahu Maharaj (descendent of Great King Shivaji) - expanded the Maratha Kingdom up to Attock in the north. Shaniwarwada was their most celebrated residence. It was built by Peshwa Bajirao in 1732 and had a short lifespan of less than 100 years as it was burnt down in 1828.What remains today inside the fortified walls of this momumental residence is ruins that are witness to its past glory. You can experience that glory even today. All you need is a little bit of imagination and visualisation. There is a huge lawn inside and fountains. There are plaques around explaining what part of this residence stood at that particular place during the reign of Peshwas. Unfortunately all plaques are in Marathi - the local language.A guide is a must. It may be good idea to pick up guide books sold near the entrance, if you are interested in history. Entry fee for Indians is much less than for foreigners.(If you like the review pls like it and share it with your other friends who are planning to visit this place)

It has historical significant, many historical events are associated with this palace, like the love story of Bajirao and Mastani. Mastani lived for some time with Bajirao at this palace. The palace was burnt by mysterious fire of 1828, that destroyed totaly. Only structure of main gate & boundary wall etc left over after the fire. Maintainance of the palace is poor. The authority must give proper attention to maintain the important historical heritage of India. It is nice place to hang out with friend and family. People were in thier usual marathi dresses.Talking about the fort, it is a ruined quila of Peshwa , the story can be checked in Wikipedia though , there are some important points which are marked and inked with small story. It is a good place for photography and making videos as well. The huge boundary covers the whole palace is assumed to be of the era of shivaji. There is a big darwaza in the front, similarly there are 2-3 more darwaza of that period. If you are a history buff or enjoy art and architecture, this monument must be on your itineraryShaniwar Wada was built by Peshwa Baji Rao I, a general under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of the Maratha Empire. He laid the foundation of the site in 1730 and the construction was completed in 1732. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal seven-storied palace made of stones. However, after the construction of the base floor, the people of the national capital complained to the king that only he was authorized to build stone palaces. Consequently, the remaining floors were constructed using bricks. The full impact of this was felt when the British artillery attacked the palace 90 years after its construction.Shaniwar Wada features the Maratha Imperial architectural style. For the construction, teak was sourced from the Junnar jungles while lime was brought from the Jejuri lime belts and stones from the Chinchwad quarries. The fortification wall of the palace had five entry points and nine bastion towers. The palace was designed with intricately carved teak doorways, exquisitely designed teak pillars, and marble floors. Scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata adorned its walls while glass chandeliers hung from the ceilings. Within the palace complex, the Ganpati Rang Mahal was erected as a separate place for observing religious functions. It had a massive statue of Lord Ganesha.
