The world famous temple of Pune. I visited today as Ganesh Puja is going on. They did good arrangements this time keeping Covid in mind. You get entry through one street and exit through other. Its one way even for people walking on road. You cant go inside temple, get in queue and have darshan from road only.

This is one of the best and busiest Ganapati temple I came to across in Pune. The place is situated in a very heavy densed populated and busiest area of Pune city. Despite the heavy traffic we are able to take the blessings of Ganapati from the roadside only. Thats one of its own kind as we all are able to see and take the blessing directly without getting inside of the temple. I loved this concept. I visit there whenever I get time...!!!

Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple (Marathi: श्रीमंत दगडूशेठ हलवाई गणपती) in Pune, India is a temple dedicated to the Hindu God Ganesh. The temple is located a short distance from the historical Shaniwar Wada fort, which was administrative headquarters of Peshwas of Maratha Empire. The temple is popular in Maharashtra and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. Devotees of the temple include celebrities and Chief Ministers of Maharashtra who visit during the annual ten day Ganeshotsav festival. The main Ganesh idol is insured for sum of 1 crore(US$170,000).The temple was founded in 1893 by Dagadusheth Halwai, a sweetmart seller who became a wealthy businessman. Halwai had lost his son the previous year, and at the request of his guru created murtis (image of a deity) of Ganesha and Dattatreya. He later established the Halwai Ganapati Trust. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, during the British Raj, gave a public form to the Ganesh festival celebrations as a way of getting around an order that barred public meetings.

The deity of Lord Ganesha was incepted by Shri Dagdusheth Halwai and his wife Lakshmibai way back, when they lost their only son to the plague epidemic. Every year, the Ganpati festival was celebrated with deep faith and enthusiasm, not only by Dagdusheth’s family but the entire neighbourhood. Tatyasaheb Godse, then in his early youth, was a zestful participant in the celebrations. In later years, when Lokmanya Tilak made Ganpati festival a public celebration to bring people together for the freedom struggle, Dagdusheth Ganpati became the most respected and popular idol in Pune.In 1952, the responsibility of organizing the festival at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple officially fell upon Tatyasaheb and his group of friends. Under Tatyasaheb’s able guidance and leadership, his associates like Mamasaheb Rasane, Adv. Shankarrao Suryavanshi and K. D. Rasane planned and executed the festival with meticulous planning and professionalism, and since then, there was no looking back for them. As generous donors and devotees contributed towards the temple fund, Tatyasaheb and his friends thought what better way to worship the Lord than to serve our own fellow beings.Soon, the young motivated group took the activities of the festival and the temple beyond traditional worship, into the domain of social and cultural development. Besides a rich religious schedule at the temple, they engaged in addressing the social and political problems of the state.Under the aegis of Dagdusheth Halwai Sarvajanik Ganpati Trust, they started several social initiatives including educational and financial support to deprived children, micro finance to small businessmen and vendors through Suvarnayug Sahakari Bank, old age home, rehabilitation of workers working at brick kilns to name only a few.Today, by Lord Ganesha’s blessings, Dagdusheth Halwai Sarvajanik Ganpati Trust has flourished into a veteran organization that is gratified to worship the Lord through its service to humanity.

Very positive feeling. If you want to go here then prefer going on two wheeler or by cab. Dont take your own vehicles as there is no parking space even in pay and park. Or drop your family and you go roam around till they complete their visit and pickup and go. Novice driver can get scratch easily as roads are very narrow with high density of vehicle on road. The temple administration good. For both Gents and Ladies, they have separate queues that help make it comfortable during rush times. You do get plenty of time to see and worship the god. The crowd leaders were very polite and helpful. They also dont let you click videos.

41) Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati.A Punekar or not, every person who is a part of this city knows about the legendary Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati. The indomitable jewel of our city, this beloved Ganpati and his Mandir gets a heavy amount of visitors.🌼 ABOUT DAGDUSHETH HALWAI GANPATI MANDIRAdorned with gold and diamonds, this deity is a relief for sore eyes. When I think of Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati, I get a healthy dose of nostalgia.I remember being a part of the congested crowd on Laxmi road at 4 am on Anant Chaturdashi.Waiting anxiously to see the gorgeous idol slowly parade in front of me, so I could touch it and pray.Every Punekar has an emotional attachment with Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati, and rightly so!Here are some interesting facts to cement our faith in our city’s beautiful savior.🌼 HISTORY OF DAGDUSHETH HALWAI GANPATI MANDIRDagdusheth Halwai, originally Dagdusheth Gadve, was a sweet maker from Karnataka. After gaining enormous success in his business, he was referred to by the locals as Dagdusheth Halwai (sweet maker). His original shop still exists near Datta Mandir, we know it by the popular name- Kaka Halwai.🌼 ESTABLISHMENT OF DAGDUSHETH HALWAI GANPATI MANDIRThe temple was established in 1893 by a grief-stricken Dagdusheth Halwai. After losing his son to the plague, Dagdusheth and his wife were advised by their Guru- Shri Madhavnath Maharaj, to build a Ganpati Temple. The temple became a healing source for not just the merchant and his wife, but to the millions of Punekars who still visit it regularly.Lokmanya Tilak was a close friend of Dagdusheth Halwai. While witnessing the construction of the temple, it dawned on him that Maharashtra needed a festival to come together and celebrate. Thus, the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati became a source of historical importance; this is where the festival originated.Often renowned for making several devotees weep tears of joy, this idol simply cannot be explained in words. To call it beautiful would be an understatement. It is merely 7.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, but unlike Mumbai’s Ganpati idols, Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati is famous for his elegant and detailed facial features, rather than the idol’s size. The idol is adorned with more than 8 kilos of gold.Dagdusheth and his grandson Govindsheth shared a common belief- service to man is service to God.Thus, the Temple’s Trust was established, and is now one of the richest trust foundations in India. This trust receives heavy donations and they are renowned for their philanthropic work. They operate an old age home called ‘Pitashree’ and they are also responsible for the maintenance and decoration of the temple.🌸 SanchitaReviews | 3/5🌸 Where | Ganpati Bhavan, 250, Budhvar Peth, Pune🌸 Call | NA🌸 Timing | 6 am to 11 pm🌸 Entry Fees | None🌸 Parking | The temple doesn’t have a dedicated space for parking, but you may find a spot near the Mahatma Phule Market which is a 5-minute walk away. Your best bet is to hitch a rickshaw ride to Budhwar Peth from wherever you are in the city.🌸 What Could Be Improved |➡️ The temple can provide better facilities for devotees like clean restrooms, better crowd management, giving annual reports on how the donations are used.#SanchitaSairangKshatriya#dagdushethhalwaiganpati#incredibleindia
