An intriguing museum with a lot of references to the medieval history of India is located in Pune and that is the most famous tourist places in Pune, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. It possesses the rare collection of Dr. Dinkar G Kelkar dedicated to the memory of his sone, Raja. There are three floors for this museum displaying different types of sculptures dating back to the 14th century along with ivory, silver and gold items and musical instruments, war weapons, vessels etc. The collection began in 1920 and by 1960, the museum was filled with 15000 objects and later in 1962, Dr. Kelkar donated all the collections to the Government of Maharashtra. Currently, if you visit the museum, you will come across more than 20000 objects out of which 2500 only are on display. The museum showcases the different artistic materials found from different parts of India from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection includes door frames, vessels, paintings, handicrafts, carvings etc. Museum 2000 is a project that has been started to make Dr. Kelkarr’s dream of an education and cultural museum come true and to be opened to the public in order to provide them proper knowledge on the artistic values of India. Museum Shoppee is an additional venture at the museum that will give attractive souvenir items at a reasonable rate and it is located at the exit point.Entry timings: You can visit the museum round the year and it will be open from 10:00 am to 05:30 pm.Entry fee:-Rs. 10.00 for children below 12 years-Rs. 50.00 for adult above 12 years-Rs. 200.00 for foreigners (adult)-Rs. 50.00 for foreigners (children)-Entry is free for blind and differently abled/ physically challenged visitors.

Presently, it is under the control of the the Department of Archaeology, Government of Maharashtra.Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum has a collection of almost 20,000 articles, belonging to different parts of the world, which were collected by Baba Kelkar. Stellar collection. Youd never know its size from the street. Jam-packed - plan on lots of time, especially if you know something about local history. One key place this museum could improve is in the lack of interpretive information. I got a lot out of it because I was there with a local friend who was extremely well-informed. But on your own, its just a large collection of beautiful objects. Maybe a rental audio guide, more plaques, etc. Maybe even an identifiable docent on each floor? Really do take the time. Youll be happy you did.

I wondered how great our history has been.Photography is allowed on a pay of Rs100/-.Initially i didnt opt for the photos, but when i entered, i immediately regreted my decision.I went back, payed Rs100/-, and then just completely enjoyed such artistic displays.Rush is moderate, so its quite comfortable to roam around and click pics.Actually, its location is a bit in the interiors of the city,so rush isnt an issue. It took me around 3.5 hrs to complete the museum tour.If you are an ancient lover and interested in never seen before things, go to this location...You definitely wont regret.

Situated in a nondescript by lane with only a small board on Bajirao road being a clue to its existence. Until you enter the building you have no clue of what is going to hit you. From the first step you are immediately transferred into history sampling our shared culture one century at a time.To understand our selves and our culture, it is essential that we look into at all facets of the daily life of days gone by.The intricately carved archways, posts, windows and doors give you a vista into the architecture. The lamps and lighting section is also fascinatingThe floor with kitchen items give a glimpse to the food and processes they adopted to produce culinary delights. The variety of implements used is fascinating. Detailing down to scoops, ladles and measures even tell us of the appetite of our forefathers. The Textile floor has sarees, robes with real zaris, there is also a collection of headgear. Eyeopener to fashion of the bygone days.from here you go to a floor full or war paraphernalia, swords, daggers, spears, arrows, dand-pattas, coats of armour, shields and helmets to early firearms!Kaka Kelkar collected an astounding 25,000 pieces of antiquities though only a fraction will be on display at any given time. On my earlier visit decades ago they had far more items on display, now they have fewer but displayed better in my opinion. All in a all a great place to visit, especially with your children.
