Started by a group of disciples of Shri Aurobindo after he chose to retire in 1910, this ashram was handed over to the spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa, commonly referred to as the Mother. The ashram is one of the most spiritual and tranquil places to visit in Pondicherry and is frequented by tourists, spiritual aspirants and locals who wish to learn more about Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, who spent their lives here and also to practice or learn Integral Yoga, a form of yoga that aims to transform human life into the divine life.Timings: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM; 2:00 PM to 6:00 PMEntry Fee: None

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community or ashram located in Pondicherry, is the outcome of a small community of disciples who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he retired from politics and settled in Pondicherry in 1910. Its built in pristine white, which represents peace. We visited this Ashram during our visit to Pondicherry. A very serene & calm place. You need to enter barefeet, see around the ashram. You can sit quietly on the floor & mediate there for 15..20 minutes. There is pin drop silence. Not a word is uttered as per the rule. Takes about 30 minutes for the entire process & then u exit. Nice place overall. I loved it.

The Ashram is located in the eastern part of Pondicherry. Inmates live and work in a number of buildings spread throughout the area. The focus of community life is the Ashram main building, usually called simply the Ashram, which consists of an interconnected block of houses, including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for most of their lives. At its centre, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the Samadhi, a white marble shrine where their bodies are laid to rest.

I like very much that the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, frequently visited to there by our family members. Before we enter the Ashram we got lunch coupons from Central Bureau about Rs 25 to 50 for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Mostly in the Ashram and Dining Hall, children are not allowing under 3 years. We love very much that Ashrams Samadhi place, Mother and Aurobindo rooms after the Darshan and Meditation, we move for lunch at Dinning Hall. Here we should come in time, otherwise they wont allow to enter. We have to follow the queue, get the plate, they have serve rice as much we require, then we get 2 bowls, one is mostly vegetables sambar and another one is curd, if we need sugur for curd they serve it, and additionally banana and bread slice also provide to us, Everywhere we go, that is Ashrams connected places, first up all we have to keep silence and discipline these both habits very much attracted us and also the Ashrams people well maintaining till now,...

While sitting inside Aurobindo Ashram, I thought of Bakers Immortality project. How a mortal man can have a place close to shrine, to make his memory live on. How others do it for him. This place is beautiful, serene, but oddly conflicting in many ways.I get that the people keeping and running this place want to keep the sacredness and privacy, but the real picture was oddly contrasting. Humbleness was almost absent in this place. Volunteers almost resembled to the shrine keepers at Siddhivinayak temple. Rushing people along. I simply dont get it. You want people to know who you are, who Arvind Ghosh was, what his philosophy is; but, you deny people from taking their own association, their memories with this place, may it be in any form - photo, a video, a commentary. How will people remember you if you deny them memories? How will the word pass on?Anyway... I am against selfie-maniacs too, but I would have loved to take a photo of their well kept, lndscaped garden and the unique architecture of the main building. The road where place is, is beautiful. Lined up with Gulchhadi trees and decorated with carpet of white, fragrant flowers. To be here, is a bliss. About the Ashram though, I have mixed feelings. I am sure half of the people visiting this place were there, just because this place is must visit place in Pondicherry, and not because of Aurobindo Societys ideology, which is a pity!No photos. No surprise there. 😊

The historic Aurobindo Ashram is the bungalow where the famous Indian philosopher, yogi, and nationalist, Sri Aurobindo Ghosh had stayed from 1894 to 1906. It is a spacious bungalow with 23 rooms and houses a study room, a library, and a sales emporium. What draws most people to this place is its calm environment, which is ideal for meditation, introspection, and spiritual healing. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community (ashram) located in Pondicherry, in the Indian territory of Puducherry. The ashram grew out of a small community of disciples who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he retired from politics and settled in Pondicherry in 1910. On 24 November 1926, after a major spiritual realization, Sri Aurobindo withdrew from public view in order to continue his spiritual work. At this time he handed over the full responsibility for the inner and outer lives of the sadhaks (spiritual aspirants) and the ashram to his spiritual collaborator, the Mother, earlier known as Mirra Alfassa. This date is therefore generally known as the founding-day of the ashram, though, as Sri Aurobindo himself wrote, it had “less been created than grown around him as its centre.”[Once confined to a few buildings in one corner of Pondicherry, the Ashram’s growth has caused it to expand physically in all directions. Today Ashramites live and work in more than 400 buildings spread throughout the town. The central focus of the community is one group of houses including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother dwelt for most of their lives in Pondicherry. This interconnected block of houses — called “the Ashram main-building”, or more usually just “the Ashram” — surrounds a tree-shaded courtyard, at the centre of which lies the flower-covered “Samadhi”. This white marble shrine holds, in two separate chambers, the physical remains of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.Today, Pondicherry has become an important destination for spiritual seekers as well as tourists. Thousands of visitors from all over the world come to the ashram. The visiting hours for the visitors are from 8 am to 12 noon and then again from 2 pm to 6 pm.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a well known and wealthy ashram in India, with devotees from India and all over the world flocking to it for spiritual salvation...its spiritual tenets represent a synthesis of yoga and modern science...the Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghose, an Indian freedom fighter, poet, philosopher, and yogi...Mirra Alfassa (also known as ‘The Mother’) was one of Aurobindos followers, who was born in Paris and was so inspired by his philosophy that she stayed on in Pondicherry...after 24 November 1926, when Sri Aurobindo retired into seclusion, she founded his ashram...with Sri Aurobindos full approval she became the leader of the community, a position she held until her death...the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, which she had registered after Sri Aurobindos death in 1950 continues to look after the institution...It is open to the public daily between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Children below 3 years of age are not allowed into the ashram and photography is allowed only with permission of the ashram authorities...some of the ashram’s facilities like the Library and the Main Building (during collective meditation) can be accessed, only after obtaining a gate pass from the Bureau Central or some of the Ashram Guest Houses. It is located on Rue De La Marine...Once you go inside the premises, there is feel of peace and serenity...you would be pulled to be in that place for a longer time because of the peaceful atmosphere inside the Ashram...One more thing once inside the ashram you need to maintain silence...you cannot talk/shout...

Its short tour. Its not a big property. What to expect ? Well the care takers want you to keep moving. They would encourage you to buy books on the life of Saint Autobindo and mother. They would also suggest to visit the different building of Ashram which are just near by. Also just as you enter you would see the grave of Saint and mother on your right. Its covered with arrangements of flower and people might be sitting near, praying. I would suggest just keep moving and it will not take more than 10 min.
