The village Pottapi is located on the left bank of the river Cheyyeru in Nandalur Mandal, an administrative division head quarter of Pottapinadu. There are number of inscriptions referring Pottapinadu and Pottapi,. According to inscription of Nannichoda dated in A.D.1157, his ancestor called Dasavarman conquered Pakarashtra ruling from Pottapi. Later Pottapinadu came under the rule of Telugu Cholas of Nellore during AD.1160. The temple dedicated to Mulasthanesvara in the form of Linga. An Inscription on a slab on the floor of garbhagriha dated to A.D.1193 refers to the Chola king Kulottunga III and also mentions Siddharasa, Nallasiddha II of Telugu Cholas of Nellore.The temple faces east and consists garbhagriha, mukhamandapa and two sub-shrines on either side of the mukhamandapa with east entrance prakara. The garbhagriha is an apsidal on plan built of massive stones with convex arched roof built of bricks and lime, looking like a gajaprishtha sikhara.The mukhamandapa serves as the common hall for two sub shrines lying opposite to each other which was added later to the apsidal shrine. The adhisthana is built of stone and the walls of the mukhamandapa and subshrines are built of brick. The mukhamandapa has four pillars in the centre. The sub shrines are dedicated to Virabhadra and Devi. To the east of the mukhamandapa, there is a Nandi mandapa dhvajastambha and balipitha, in a serial manner.The Mulasthanesvara temple at Pottapi resembles as a Buddhist Chaityagriha, but can be dated to 12th century A.D.
