New Japanese in Port Melbourne for $42.50!!! ❤Went there last night to check it out, the menu is very similar to the famous franchise Okami. With slightly less fried items. But‼️the main difference I have to say is the quality of their ingredients. If you are craving sushi/sashimi this is THE PLACE. The salmon sashimi slice is generously thick. Their rice is perfect in consistency and flavour. I loved all the sushi roll options.Beef tataki is also miles better than Okami. Much better quality, thicker slice. No fat.I did love the Yakitori. The charred could have been better but it was tender. Squid tentacles were also great, would be best with beer! All the fried dishes were overall really good as its not oily and they have a good batter. And the final surprise the fried rice!!! This might have been one of the best fried rice to us. It has the aromatic of what a good fried rice should be. It also has this chewiness consistency that is really nice to have. A TAD on a salty side. But great flavour. Some negatives would be the Steak dish. Not sure if its the way they cut it or the type of meat but it was too chewy and not tender. I loved miso steak at Okami and this one aint better. But I would recommend to maybe ask if they can cut it in a smaller size and that might fix it. And the gyoza is so-so.Overall. Good place. Clean and nicer atmosphere.

Its called express, but do not be fooled by the name, as the most disappointing about this place is slow service and production.First when you enter, the atmosphere is pretty good since the shop is quiet new and all decorations is quiet trendy and authentic looking. I have been to the Forrest hill one and the feel is really different. So we all sat down and ordered, but the wait is super super long. For a all you can eat restaurant, this will drive lots of customers crazy, as you can see from the photos, not all the tables are even full, but our dishes took over 25 - 35 minutes to deliver on to the table, when most of the Japanese dishes are cold. The service is super slow, the kitchen. Is super slow. Would not recommend anyone if they would like a good meal, because by the time the dishes come on, you will be full from sitting there waiting. Not just slow food, also slow in collecting any empty plate, did not make a complain at all, just watching.Definitely not a restaurant that I would come for a second time. Maybe will still consider the Forrest hill one since they are more stable, but this one at the location of Port Melbourne, they should of done better.

Tried the 2 hours all you can eat buffet. Quality of the food was average and the staff there were friendly. We ordered out first few dishes with the drink, the food came out approximately 40 minutes later. We ended up ordering more drinks as we had finished a jug of beer by the time the first dishes we ordered were served...

We had the all you can eat buffet which was pretty good. However, service can be slow compared to other Japanese buffet places like Okami. We really liked the scallop, beef tataki and chocolate mousse! We also really like that you can order just salmon sashimi. Recommend going on a weekday evening to avoid the crowd. Parking can be a challenge so best to allow extra time for that.

Service was very slow, ordered food and took 30+ minutes to come out. All you can eat restaurant but they dont bring out the food you order in time. Ordered 10 dishes, 4 came out and then told the kitchen was closing so we ordered more. Its been 24 hours and were still waiting for some of our order to come out. Highly recommend the Isshin in Forrest Hill though, they are a 10/10

The servings were delicate and nicely presented, so you dont feel overwhelmed with large portion of the same food. We can savour different dishes and the food is amazing. Well worth having our cravings satisfied. Its better to go as a group so that you can try all the delicious dishes. Staff is friendly, prompt and very professional!

Went to celebrate bd gave up waiting for our food, no manager, paid for alcohol which we thought was fair. We ended up at McDonald’s. We will NEVER go back. This place wont be around long. Poor service actually there was no food so I guess the service was appropriate. Demanded to see someone but still no one came. After 2 1/2 hours we gave up.We kept ordering in the hope anything would show up.Never ever again.Go anywhere else it could not be worse.

I have come here on many many occasions with it being the only Japanese around and received incredibly poor service everytime. I have now broken my back and have walked here on 3 occasions for Sushi to find out they have either run out or are closed earlier than the stated times. They will never put in the extra effort even if you are a loyal regular customer.

Nice place, friendly staff, food choices were limited. Very hard to hear friends at the end of the table, very noisy. We placed an order and had to keep reminding them a couple of times that we had ordered some very simple dishes like rice. We ordered our food and at times waited an hour and a half for service. Limited alcohol choices and quite expensive. We would not return as we can get better food and service for the same price.

Really really yum food but the service was so disappointing and rude that I am sure if its worth it. Its not a cheap restaurant so I feel like the clients deserve a bit more love, We just felt like we were not welcome there at all.On top of that, they really need to update the opening hours. It says they are open until 10 or 10h30 but in reality the kitchen closes around 8:30 or something. We tried to go 3x around that time and they didnt take us.

As I live very close to the newly opened Isshin Izakaya in Port Melbourne, I was keen to try it last week as a potential new ‘go to’. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The food is overpriced and the menu is somewhat disjointed. I found it difficult to determine what would provide a decent sized meal. We also found the service lacked continuity; my friend’s and my meal came out at separate times and each dish ordered to accompany the other was not delivered at the same time. We had to ask twice about dishes we were waiting on. The upside was the great rosè on offer from the wine list, and staff were polite and friendly. Perhaps it’s just teething problems. I hope so.

The quality of the food is great and the staff are kind but service and delivery of items (especially the all you can eat) is very slow.Sadly the other reviews are somewhat true... My version would be: most staff are doing their best, great food, great environment but too many tables per chefs/staff results in very long waiting periods. We, the waiters and the chefs all forgot what we had ordered at times as it had dragged on for far too long!

Having tried the Isshin restaurant in Forrest Hill multiple times with good experience, it was an easy decision to give this branch in Port Melbourne a try when I discovered it this weekend. This place accepts online reservation, and even though I only put in the request a few hours beforehand, I found that the reservation was correctly booked in when I arrived. We opted for the all you can eat menu which costs $39.95 per person. There are quite a lot of dishes available to choose from on that menu, and most of them taste ok. This is certainly not the place if youre looking for authentic Japanese fine dining, but it is surely a good choice for those who have a big appetite. For AMEX users, Im sad to report that AMEX is not accepted here. But overall its an enjoyable dining experience.

This is a nice find on Bay street. The food is pretty good although the selection of Bentos could be greater but its more upmarket then others close by with a decent price for lunch specials at about $16 (although would be considered exxy paying their normal prices). Its light filled and they seemed to have a good range of Sake although I didnt indulge since I was there during a work day.

Je
Review №53

Barely average. The food selection sounds good, and the food is certainly presented well, but the quality falls short of expectations. The Wagyu beef was overcooked, the kaarage chicken coating was old or otherwise flat and doughy, gyoza were dry inside (overcooked?), and the pork tonkatsu was dry and chewy. One of our dishes was delayed until long after we had finished everything else, and the gentleman at the next table had the same problem. I will come and visit again as this might be just a bad day, as mentioned the selection is good and the presentation too so Im hopeful that my experience was not typical.

Came here for dinner at about 8pm, it was busy but restaurant was not by any means full. We sat outside where there were 3 uncleared tables. Waiter was aware we were outside (access to the outdoor area is through the restaurant). We sat there for 15 mins at the table with dirty dishes and napkins before we got impatient and went inside to try and get some service. Finally 5-10 mins later we had the table cleared, then a bottle of water (no cups), then some plates, then finally a menu. We tried to order and they said minimum 30 mins for food as they were very busy!! It was not the poor server’s fault, she was very nice and apologetic, but we decided to cut our losses and try somewhere else.
