First visited this wonderful Cathedral in 2007, then in 2012... It is heartbreaking that by 2019, we werent able to go inside while in Paris because it burned. Missed to again see the awesome stained glass windows, the antique fixtures, the intricate architecture of the church inside, missed to buy some religious medals and missed to light some candles and say prayers as we used to do. Looking at the destruction from afar is painful.

Notre-Dame de Paris, also called Notre-Dame Cathedral, cathedral church in Paris. It is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages and is distinguished for its size, antiquity, and architectural interest.Notre-Dame lies at the eastern end of the Île de la Cité and was built on the ruins of two earlier churches, which were themselves predated by a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. The cathedral was initiated by Maurice de Sully, bishop of Paris, who about 1160 conceived the idea of converting into a single building, on a larger scale, the ruins of the two earlier basilicas. The foundation stone was laid by Pope Alexander III in 1163, and the high altar was consecrated in 1189. The choir, the western facade, and the nave were completed by 1250, and porches, chapels, and other embellishments were added over the next 100 years.Notre-Dame Cathedral consists of a choir and apse, a short transept, and a nave flanked by double aisles and square chapels. Its central spire was added during restoration in the 19th century, replacing the original, which had been completely removed in the 18th century because of instability. The interior of the cathedral is 427 by 157 feet (130 by 48 metres) in plan, and the roof is 115 feet (35 metres) high. Two massive early Gothic towers (1210–50) crown the western facade, which is divided into three stories and has its doors adorned with fine early Gothic carvings and surmounted by a row of figures of Old Testament kings. The two towers are 223 feet (68 metres) high; the spires with which they were to be crowned were never added. At the cathedral’s east end, the apse has large clerestory windows (added 1235–70) and is supported by single-arch flying buttresses of the more daring Rayonnant Gothic style, especially notable for their boldness and grace. The cathedral’s three great rose windows alone retain their 13th-century glass.Notre-Dame Cathedral suffered damage and deterioration through the centuries. After the French Revolution it was rescued from possible destruction by Napoleon, who crowned himself emperor of the French in the cathedral in 1804. Notre-Dame underwent major restorations by the French architect Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc in the mid-19th century. The popularity of Victor Hugo’s historical novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), wherein the cathedral is the setting, was said to have inspired the renovations. During a restoration campaign in 2019, a fire broke out in the cathedral’s attic, and the massive blaze destroyed most of the roof, Viollet-le-Duc’s 19th-century spire, and some of the rib vaulting.** A simple 👍 is not gonna hurt your thumb ....

Notre-Dame de Paris (French: [nɔtʁə dam də paʁi] (About this soundlisten); meaning Our Lady of Paris), referred to simply as Notre-Dame,[a] is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its pioneering use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, as well as the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style. Major components that make Notre Dame stand out include its large historic organ and its immense church bells. The cathedrals construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely complete by 1260, though it was modified frequently in the following centuries. In the 1790s, Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the French Revolution; much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. In the 19th century, the cathedral was the site of the coronation of Napoleon I and the funerals of many presidents of the French Republic.Popular interest in the cathedral blossomed soon after the 1831 publication of Victor Hugos novel Notre-Dame de Paris (better known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). This led to a major restoration project between 1844 and 1864, supervised by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The Allied liberation of Paris in 1944 was celebrated within Notre-Dame with the singing of the Magnificat. Beginning in 1963, the cathedrals façade was cleaned of centuries of soot and grime. Another cleaning and restoration project was carried out between 1991 and 2000.The cathedral is one of the most widely recognized symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris (Michel Aupetit). In 1805, Notre-Dame was given the honorary status of a minor basilica. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in Paris.[8] The cathedral was renowned for its Lent sermons, founded by the Dominican Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire in the 1830s. In recent years, an increasing number have been given by leading public figures and state-employed academics. The cathedral has been progressively stripped of its original decoration and works of art. Several noteworthy examples of Gothic, Baroque, and 19th-century sculptures and a group of 17th- and early 18th-century altarpieces remain in the cathedrals collection. Some of the most important relics in Christendom, including the Crown of Thorns, a sliver of the true cross and a nail from the true cross, are preserved at Notre-Dame.While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the flèche (the timber spirelet over the crossing) and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling. Contamination of the site and the nearby environment resulted. Following the fire, many proposals were made for modernizing the cathedrals design. However, on 29 July 2019, the French National Assembly enacted a law requiring that the restoration must preserve the cathedrals historic, artistic and architectural interest. Stabilizing the structure against possible collapse was completed in November 2020, with reconstruction beginning in 2021. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on 14 April 2021 that the cathedral site will be formally returned to the church on April 15, 2024, and the first mass will be held in the cathedral nave on that day, even if the reconstruction is not finished.

On April 15, 2019, at 6:50 pm local time, the cathedral caught fire causing damage to the tower and roof. The extent of the damage was initially unknown as to what caused the fire, although it was suggested that it was linked to the renovation of the cathedral. A spokesman said the entire wooden frame would likely fall and that the buildings vault could also be threatened. So far the Cathedral is under renovation and closed for visits !!!Visited July 2012

An 800-year history of Pariss Notre Dame CathedralThis resilient, gravity-defying Gothic cathedral survived centuries of France’s turbulent past. It emerged in the 19th century from near ruin, thanks to a massive restoration project.NOTRE DAME DE Paris is perhaps France’s most famous landmark: standing tall at the heart of the city for centuries, accepting the people’s reverance one day, then facing their rejection on another. Its history was forever changed Monday when a massive fire broke out causing the medieval structures spire to collapse. The cathedral, which houses the crown of thorns relic, sits on the Île de la Cité, an island in the center of the Seine. The town was well-placed to control the passage of goods along the waterway and grew wealthy. By the 10th century, Paris was the center of an emerging new European power.French King Phillip II, illuminated manuscriptKing Philip II (reigned 1179-1223), 13th-century manuscript, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, Paris.AKG/ALBUMTrade was key to the city’s burgeoning fortunes, but Paris was gaining a reputation as a spiritual center as well. A saintly cult had been developing around its local martyr, St. Denis. According to tradition, Denis was beheaded on the hill of Montmartre (“martyrs’ mount”) in the mid- to late-third century A.D., after which he ran six or so miles while carrying his severed head. In a spot north of the city, alleged to be where he stopped running, a basilica was built in the 12th century to honor him.One witness of the construction of the Basilica of Saint-Denis was the 12th-century Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully. He admired the work of the pioneering architects, who were building in the new Gothic style of soaring ceilings and abundant light. Sully decided to create a rival structure in the heart of Paris itself: a cathedral that would be the wonder of Christendom and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The times smiled on Sully’s project. This stage of the high Middle Ages was marked by an economic boom in Europe, especially in France. With the generous financial backing provided by the crown, Sully contracted an architect (whose identity is unknown) to design the new church in 1160. Its construction required demolishing various houses in the cramped medieval neighborhood and two existing churches on the Île de la Cité that had, in their own day, been built over an ancient pagan temple. The first stone was laid in June 1163, in a lavish ceremony attended by Pope Alexander III.Building a ChurchBuilding Notre Dame took nearly two centuries from start to finish. The cathedral became a lifelong project for Sully. Work on the sanctuary and nave began first. In 1182, under the reign of the new king, Philip II, the high altar was consecrated. Sully was able to celebrate the first Mass in the cathedral but would die in 1196, nearly 150 years before the main structures of the cathedral would be finished in the 1300s.

The fencing goes along the plaza area in front of the church as well. The front of the cathedral still looked like it was intact with the two towers on either side. The rear end, however, was a different story. You can see places where it has collapsed and all the scaffolding around the area. I did find that there were nicer views of the cathedral on the other side of the river where there were no fences in the way. I had a walk around the circumference of the cathedral before leaving. The Northern end where I can come from had information boards about the cathedral and the progress of the rebuild. It was a bit disappointing I couldnt get closer to check out what was left. Beautiful and historical churche in the heart of Paris, unfortunately we couldn‘t get inside because of the fires in 2019. Still worth to see it from the outside and take some nice pictures 😊

✳️ Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris is a unique building. It was devastating to see the terrible damage after the fire. We have visited Notre-Dame previously so we have been fortunate to enjoy its splendour. The site on which the cathedral is built goes back to ancient times, but Notre-Dame was built over a period of many years starting in 1160. Over the centuries it suffered various degrees of damage and destruction but it was always rebuilt. Hopefully it will be rebuilt to resemble its former glory soon.

Go early in the morning, and see it all without the crowds of tourists! This place is amazing! Then, get your ticket lined up for the gargoyle tour, and head over to the underground museum while you wait. So much history and work has been put into this building and the area above that it really is quite a treat to experience it all as is.

Another cleaning and restoration project was carried out between 1991 and 2000.

Absolutely amazing condition. Really long lines at times but tends to move. It is a function church so it does depend when you visit. The stain glass windows stand out better with the sun behind them, you may have to visit a few times to see them all like that. They have banners with the built details of the church in multiple languages. There are painting on the walls also as you go down and the center has a history lesson in carved wood.
