Positive energy of pagan era remains in this Armenian Apostolic temple. Great views of Armenian Grand Canion.
Great view and open air museum.
One of my favourite churches in Armenia. It is situated next to a valley so dont forget to appreciate the might of nature when you come to visit this church. Its architecture is beautiful as well. Easy to get there by public transport as well.

Its an amazing place. The monastery is located in Ohanavan village. The 4th section of the monastery, towards the Aray Mountains and the Kasakh Gorge, is impassable because the bottom is abyss. We have wonderful architecture.
Hovhannavank is a medieval Armenian monastery located in Armenia, in the village of Ohanavan. In the Ayrarat region of historical Armenia. At one time, the monastery was one of the main and significant monasteries in Armenia. It contained a shroud in which Jesus Christ was wrapped, and the nail with which his right hand was nailed. In addition, the hand of St. Stephen was kept in the monastery. Later, the relics of St. Stephen were transferred to Etchmiadzin for storage. The monastery suffered from earthquakes, and from the shelling of Hasan Khan during the Russian-Persian war. However, each time the complex was restored. The monastery complex contains the ChurchSurb Karapet 1216-1221 The main church of the monastery is a cross-domed type. The walls are richly decorated with bas-reliefs and ornaments with Christian motives. The four-pillar gavit is decorated with an openwork rotunda over the upper skylight 1248-1550.Basilica of Surb Grigor V century, it has one of the few iconostases in Armenia. From the north, the temple is adjoined by the ruins of the church of the first Christians, dating back to the beginning of the 4th century. The southern wall of the temple and the high dome on a twelve-sided drum were destroyed in 1919 during a strong earthquake. In 1970-1990, a major reconstruction was carried out, during which these elements of the church were restored. Also, to this day, the remains of the fortress walls with towers of the XII-XIII centuries and ancient gravestones have been preserved ...

Published in 1865, Geographical and Statistical Dictionary of the Russian Empire, speaking about the monastery, noted
Hovhannavank Monastery is located above a high gorge near the Kasakh River and stands on the very cliff. At one time, he was one of the main and significant monasteries of Armenia. It contained a shroud in which Jesus Christ was wrapped, and a nail with which his right hand was nailed. In addition, the right hand of St. Stephen was stored in the monastery, which was later transferred to storage in Etchmiadzin. The light window of the porch of Hovhannavank is the largest in Armenia, and all its walls and the cathedral are covered with commemorative inscriptions that tell about the gifts to the temple. Image above the entrance - Jesus Christ and the intelligent and unreasonable virgins of the Gospel of Matthew. True, for some reason, all the virgins with beards, and reasonable, on the left, with candles, and unreasonable, on the right😂The explanation of this quirk is simple - in the Armenian language the word virgo has no gender, therefore the carver portrayed men here.Near the monastery are the ruins of an ancient fortress, the wall thickness of which is very significant - 4 meters minimum. There are numerous caves beneath the monastery, some of a very impressive size. The legend says that when Tamerlane attacked the village of Oganavan, the abbot of Hovhannavank asked the conqueror for permission for the last prayer to the entire local population in the monastery’s cathedral, to which a positive answer was received. As a result, all the parishioners entered the church and closed the doors of the temple, when the warriors of Tamerlane went after them - the cathedral was empty, they all disappeared, only pigeons flying around were visible. The abbot told the soldiers that the Lord had turned all people into birds.Perhaps the legend has a real basis, since it is known that the caves under the monastery are very extensive, and most importantly they are connected to the cathedral by the underground passage, now laid. The population of Oganavan could go down, and from there, from the caves, to launch pigeons.
An interesting monastery, which stands next to a beautiful gorge opposite the highest waterfall in Armenia ... which no longer exists. Water from the waterfall was taken to the hydroelectric station. There was no limit to my pinking. There are a couple of streams left, which are generally difficult to notice.
A place with very strong energy! Even being outside you feel calm and a pleasant inner balance.
Beautiful majestic nature and a wonderfully organically inscribed church in it. Very beautiful, a must visit.
