We attempted to order takeaway for 6 people on a Saturday night, so keep that in mind. We tried calling ahead but the phone was constantly on hold or just ringing out. We decided to go to the restaurant and order takeaway (we wanted to spend some time at the Strand that night anyways).When we arrived, we placed our (admittedly rather lengthy) order, while the phone rang off the hook next to him. It was picked up maybe twice during the whole exchange, but ignored most of the time. Guess thats why we didnt get through on the phone.What followed was a 1.5 hour wait for food, and we needed to ask them about our food multiple times, just to be sure we werent forgotten. The restaurant was decently busy and there was a lot going on with takeaways. Fortunately our order wasnt forgotten - other waiting customers were forgotten.The food was great, but not worth the wait, or the service. This restaurant seems to seriously struggle with managing customer demand on busy nights. I recommend not ordering takeaway - instead dine in. Those customers appeared to receive priority over waiting takeaway customers. Perhaps the experience would be better on a weeknight!Probably not going back. The experience stole our whole night and we ended up taking our food home and eating it there.

This restaurant has topped my list, food is so flavoursome and freshly queezed juices made to perfection. Definitely worth a visit! 🤤

Wow! Wow!! WOW!! This place is absolutely amazing!! The service, nor the food, missed a single beat. Incredibly friendly and enthusiastic staff. Food was presented so beautifully and prepared/cooked to perfection. I personally ordered multiple items in anticipation and stuffed my face for nearly two hours. I couldnt stop. I highly recommend this Japanese restaurant if you are in the area. Delicious!! Thank you to all the staff here for being the highlight of our time in Townsville. 10/10!!

Simply excellent food, good service, outstanding value too. A friend and I shared 2 tapas plates (minced pork dumplings, fried chicken), and a teppanyaki meal, perfect for two, no room for dessert unfortunately! Frantically busy Friday and Saturdays, better on other nights.

Definitely not authentic sushi. Don’t understand why they put lettuce in their sushi rolls. What is even worse is that they put prawns in a California roll. I tried to explain to them crab goes in it, and they were very forward to say it was prawns.... okay then... very pricey for food that is not authentic. Sorry. AND the service was horrible! They actually straight up lied to me about my dish. Long story short, they are not hospitable. Long lines, angry service.

TLDR: Amazing Food, good pricing, a great place for a date!Everytime I have eaten here has been on some kind of date, its a regular suggestion when my partner and I are deciding where to go. The food is consistently very high quality at prices that dont break the bank, the service is good and the atmosphere on quieter nights is great.However the unfortunate downside of being a great option, is that many other people share the same idea, as such it can often be busy and relatively noisy. However if you simply cannot stomach the crowd, takeaway is an option!Would highly recommend!

You cant beat the price for their lunch specials. Fantastic quality of food, delicious and good service. Make sure youll try the green tea thick shake. The best Ive had. ... If you wanna buy the same menu at dinner time, it would cost much much more.

Excellent cuisine, but short staff on night of our visit. Still the obviously overwhelmed staff made the best of the situation, were cordial and strove to overcome what was obviously not enough resources to meet the immediate demand. Food excellent and well presented.

Didnt get a chance to eat the food. Was waiting at the register to be served and the host sat the people waiting in front of me then just didnt bother coming back. There was no hello or acknowlegment of the people waiting in line, we were just waiting while all the employees walked around us. It is called the hospitality industry for a reason!!!!

Best restaurant in Townsville by far. Fantastic fresh melt-in-your mouth Japanese dishes, great variety, usually cant finish because of generous sizes (Oh how we tried!). Decent prices. Great staff, very attentive, friendly. We never have to wait long for a table when busy. World class!

Have been here many times and have never had an issue. Staff are excellent and very friendly. Have been for lunch and dinner, lots of great options. Would make a booking for dinner as they can get very busy

So disappointed with the food. Never come back again. Not authentic Japanese food at all. So much soy sauce and extremely salty, making me feel headache. Even a Sushi place is better than this.

All the food we ordered was great and enjoyed by both kids and adults! The yakitori chicken and the gyoza were definitely the highlights but the chicken karaage was very good too. Drinks also received a thumbs up and service was prompt. I highly recommended this place. Must try.

Tourist from Perth, visiting Townsville. Walked off the street witb no booking on a Saturday evening at around 7pm. Appeared busy and was told to return in 30mins, understandably. Seating was available at the return time.Ordered the gyoza and special bento boxes.Unfortunately the wait for food was over 40mins. And I noted that other tables were receiving their food before us, despite ordering after us. Reasonable atmosphere. Staff was friendly, but that service was lacking. Food was average, nothing breath-taking.

Meals were spot on. A little bit of chaos pre and post meal but can forgive because the staff clearly cared, and were doing their best to keep us updated on how things were travelling regarding our meals.

I called in to this restaurant late on a Sunday night with no expectations. The reception was not staffed immediately but the owner came out to greet me. Perhaps greet me isnt the right phrase as the welcome wasnt warm at all - but I was here for food not friendship so I smiled and continued. The seafood meal I wanted was on the front cover and so I ordered that. I was hungry having travelled all day and I didnt have to wait long. The seafood was fresh and while the serving size wasnt large the meal was very tasty. The king prawns were fresh, the fish pieces tasty and the squid just right. The broccoli was cooked to perfection. This was exactly what I wanted The meal was around $35 which was quite expensive for takeaway, and the portion size but I was happy because of the quality,

Have previously rated this place very highly.However, tonight (22/01) we made a reservation for 8.15 to 8.30 as per the restaurants availability dn were left standing out on the side walk for over 30 minutes. We were then asked of we could order our meals whilst still standing on the sidewalk because the kitchen closes at 9!We didnt even have a table!Owner didnt know what was going on, didnt care, not sure?Absolutely appallingBy time we left to quickly find somewhere to eat everything else has closed.G.Y.O, THANKS FOR NOTHING!

I just don’t get this place. The decor is non specific and the cuisine is Japanese. Not the place to come if you are looking for traditional Ramen soup as this isn’t on the menu. I’m not sure why they were playing an old Katherine Hepburn movie on the TV?? The service is slow at peak times, but the food they do present is AMAZING!!

I just walked into this restaurant off the street with no expectation. When I saw the menu with photos of the meals I thought oh oh. But this place was really a pleasant surprise. I eat a lot of Japanese and the food at Gyo is definitely better than average and will not disappoint. The sashimi consisted of top quality cuts, the tempura was lovely and crisp, and the mango parfait was just magic. In fact I’d go back to Gyo just for the mango parfait... try it.

High quality Japanese restaurant. Food here is always both delicious and beautiful. Its one of Townsvilles most popular restaurants so there might be a small wait to get some seats. They do really good share plates as well. Check out the food here for sure, they represent Japanese cuisine the the best of the best.

We had dinner here on Saturday night, it was a last minute decision so we didn’t have a reservation but they made sure to find us a table.Food was so delicious!!! So fresh so tasty omg, cannot wait to go again. Highly recommend! Service was so lovely too 👌

I have only visited once before for dinner, a few years back. Today I went for lunch. The meals taste as great as they look. I dont k ow what took me so long to go back. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Gyo is the go-to restaurant in Townsville for those wanting 5-star tapas. the presentation of the food is always top-notch the staff are so friendly and respectful. they love business and the food and drinks are always served extremely quickly. we use Gyo for special events like birthdays and date nights

A truly wonderful experience! As a group of 4 celebrating a birthday, we ordered 8 Tapas to share and they were all very tasty, well presented, and well priced. There was a good variety of different dishes and flavors, and a nice selection of drinks from Japan as Australia. the venue was clean, modern, and pleasant. The staff were extremely attentive and pleasant, and answered all out questions. It was a great Japanese experience in Australia, and was made all the better by having primarily Japanese staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant, and will be back again!

The restaurant was recommended by friends and we were pleased we took their advice. We shared some Edamame which was very good and then shared the grilled eggplant which was exceptional. We then each had a GYO special bento box. All the food was good with the sashimi and tempura being the standouts. The warm house sake was a good match for the food. The service was attentive and helpful. Will have another night at GYO during our stay in Townsville.

Was a great night out with delicious, authentic Japanese food. We went out on a Saturday night and made a reservation which was lucky because it was quite busy. After arriving we were promptly taken to our table and staff were attentive all night. Beer was cold and food was quick to arrive. All the food was nice but the miso soup and the karaage took me back to Tokyo, really good!Look forward to our next time there.

Very nice Japanese restaurant, great service and food. It has a slightly upscale feel to it which is nice. However, my favourite kind of Japanese restaurants are those that are smaller, more traditional and who serves authentic Japanese curry with unlimited helpings to rice and miso soup. Unfortunately i have still yet to find one in Australia. I miss this place called Osaka back in Christchurch, New Zealand. Anyways, Gyo is a nice restaurant but compared to the sushi rolls Ive had in Melbourne, theres still much that could be improved! ^~^

As a frequent diner of Gyo they always provide consistently good food time after time. Friendly service is also a strong point for Gyo. Townsville needs more diverse ranges of cuisines and Gyo is a perfect example of how it should be done. Keep up the great work.

Positives:- Good service and friendly staff- vegetarian sushi platter and the tofu and vegetable tepanyaki was good.Negatives:- DO NOT BUY THE EGGPLANT DISH. It comes with 3 egg plants that are drenched, and I mean DRENCHED, with oil. To give you an idea, 1 eggplant had a quarter of a cup full of oil. We would have wished they would have told us that this was the case. Heart attack waiting to happen.

Recently we went to Townsville’s GYO Japanese Restaurant for dinner! It was extremely busy, so we expected the meals to be A1. The service wHad dinner here with the family while visiting Townsville. The food was great and fresh and the servings generous, although service was slow. We enjoyed the Sukiyaki very much but wouldn’t have it again.

Should have a Michelin Star. Every dish was amazing.
