It simply blew my mind to find this exquisite mosque set within the Old Fort complex.Built in 1541 CE by Sher Shah Suri, this mosque was used for prayers by the royal families of both the Suris and the Mughals who came after them.Structure is well maintained by Archaeological Survey of India, it was neat and tidy and very well maintained. No prayers are offered here anymore hence you can visit any day but I do hope decorum of proper dress code is maintained as it still is a house of God.No seprate tickets required and due to presence of many inclines even persons of reduced mobility can visit.

Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque (Mosque of the Old Fort) is a mosque located inside the premises of Purana Qila (Old Fort) in Delhi, the capital of India. After Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun, he occupied Purana Qila. There, he built the mosque for his private use, which became a symbol of his royal aspiration. The mosque is believed to have been constructed in 1541 CE.The mosque is located inside Sher Shah Suris fort, Purana Qila, which became his fortification after he won Delhi. It is one of the structures beside the Sher Mandal (which is attributed as Humayuns library) present in the fort. The fort is located near the Delhi zoo.The mosques history is derived from various accounts of contemporary historians. The Tarikh-i-Sher Shahi, written by Abbas Sarwani, says that Sher Shah Suri built the mosque in 1540, from gold, lapis lazuli and other precious stones. He is said to have built the mosque to revive the citys status as a major city. Historian MC Joshi argues that although Sher Shah completed the mosque, it was originally designed and its construction was started by Humayun. Joshi believes that Sher Shah built the upper part of the mosque which included the dome. The marble works of the exterior walls could be attributed to his son Akbar, because the geometric works are of his time and not of pre-Akbar era. The use of half-dome, pointed arches represents A strong Mughal association.Humayun is credited with introducing pietra dura works in the liwan and mihrab. The mosque is built in the Afghan style of a congregational mosque. It is a symbol of the architectural tradition of a five bay mosque, a concept which was developed during the Sayyid and Lodi dynasty times. The mosque lacks any inscription. Its length and breadth is 51 metres (167 ft) and 13.5 metres (44 ft), respectively. It has a height of 20 metres (66 ft) (which includes the dome). The mosque was built by core masonry with stone rubble bonded with lime mortar. Blocks of quartzite, marble and red sandstone were also used in the construction process. The internal rectilinear hall is laterally divided by five arches. The external facade comprises the same number of arches. The central arch is sunken in an arched recess which is contained within a rectangular frontage called liwan. The mosque was originally intended to be constructed from marble but as it ran out of supply, red sandstone had to be used.

Qila i kuhna Mosque. Old age mosque one of the Heritage spot
“This fabulous fort has so much to offer in terms of history and architecture. A must visit while in Delhi.”This beautiful and strong fort, situated next to Zoological Garden, is rich in history and is a good specimen of architecture and culture of times of Mughal ruler Humayun and Sher Shah Sur. Humanyun started building this fort and lost it to Sher Shah who added to its splendor and defence This was recaptured by Humayun who in turn died here from a fall from the stairs of Sher Mandal. It is better to start seeing this fort by walking to the front of Talaqi Darwaza which one can reach by the side of the lake outside the fort. Inside the fort, the Bada Darwaza, Qila-i-Kuhna Masjid, in terms of its architecture and extensive use of marble, both black and white and sandstone, Sher Mandal, Hamaam or Royal Bath, archaeological excavations of artifacts going back to Mahabharat times, Humayun Darwaza, Baoli or Step-well and inside of Talaaqi Darwaza are main attractions. In the evenings, a brilliant light and sound show, Ishq-i-Dilli is held on the lawns of the fort. While going out of the fort, across the road, one can see Khair-ul-Masjid and Lal Darwaza, the contemporary structures. All in all, a beautiful fort to visit with lots of history and architecture.
Beautiful nice masqo
# Fortress # Kahina # Mosque # Miscellaneous # Elements # of # Target #Genre: Mohammad Ghafran DanishIn the capital Delhi is the old fort situated on the bank of the river Jumna which has a beautiful and charming mosque along with Sher Mandal, Baoli and other historical buildings, which is known as Mosque Qila Kahina. This mosque was built by Sher Shah Suri in 1541. Built during his reign. It is a charming and beautiful mosque whose style is completely different from the Mughal method of construction which surprises visitors, this mosque is built of red and white marble, which is approximately one and a half in length. Meters and Widths are about fifteen meters. It has the capacity to offer prayers of 800 to 1000 people at a time. The mosque has five gates of red marble with Quranic verses engraved with beautiful bracelets and bulls, and white marble monuments are erected on each door on which the Quranic verses are engraved. There are beautiful and striking embellishments. But only the middle shrub was used for imamat. In front of this mosque there is a large courtyard with a well covered with woven sheets and a pool with a shower in the center for the sake of elegance, but only the markings remain. There is also a wooden door on the south side of the mosque that is locked. At the same time, there are stairs to the east that are narrow and high. At the northwest and southwest corners of this mosque there is a three-storied minaret structure, with three motifs on each floor. The tower is not taller than the ceiling, but the upper part itself is converted into a roof. On which the walls of the protective wall are made. The mosque has a dome that only two circular volume which has been built on top of Roman style creates unique beauty of this is that the House leader of the middle door. And neither the moon nor anything else was installed on it, but in recent times it has been alleged to have installed a trident on this circle of class, to defy its sanctity and to curb the sentiments of Muslims. The mosque is under the supervision of archeology and is also regularly guarded by a guard, but nevertheless, its sanctity is mocked and it has the silent permission to perform all the acts except prayer. The winning example is the trident installed on it, which is enough to explain their unpleasant intentions. The requirement today is that the Muslim Hindustan, especially the Auqaf Committee, as well as the Muslims of Delhi, should make every effort to recover such mosques and the Archaeological Department should urge the Government of India to take notice of it at the earliest and hand over this kind of deserted mosques of the Muslims of India so that they maintain the sanctity and holiness of the population and be able to pay the arbitrator uqth prayer.
