Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial new Delhi, 1, Motilal Nehru Palace, Near 10 Janpath, Man Singh Road Area, New DelhiShri Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 at Mughalsarai, a small railway town seven miles from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. His father was a school teacher who died when Lal Bahadur Shastri was only a year and half old. His mother, still in her twenties, took her three children to her fatherโs house and settled down there.Lal Bahadurโs small town schooling was not remarkable in any way but he had a happy enough childhood despite the poverty that dogged him.He was sent to live with an uncle in Varanasi so that he could go to high school. Nanhe, or โlittle oneโ as he was called at home, walked many miles to school without shoes, even when the streets burned in the summerโs heat.As he grew up, Lal Bahadur Shastri became more and more interested in the countryโs struggle for freedom from foreign yoke. He was greatly impressed by Mahatma Gandhiโs denunciation of Indian Princes for their support of British rule in India. Lal Bahadur Sashtri was only eleven at the time, but the process that was end day to catapult him to the national stage had already begun in his mind.Lal Bahadur Shastri was sixteen when Gandhiji called upon his countrymen to join the Non-Cooperation Movement. He decided at once to give up his studies in response to the Mahatmaโs call. The decision shattered his motherโs hopes. The family could not dissuade him from what they thought was a disastrous course of action. But Lal Bahadur had made up his mind. All those who were close to him knew that he would never change his mind once it was made up, for behind his soft exterior was the firmness of a rock.Lal Bahadur Shastri joined the Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi, one of the many national institutions set up in defiance of the British rule. There, he came under the influence of the greatest intellectuals, and nationalists of the country. โShastriโ was the bachelorโs degree awarded to him by the Vidya Peeth but has stuck in the minds of the people as part of his name.In 1927, he got married. His wife, Lalita Devi, came from Mirzapur, near his home town. The wedding was traditional in all senses but one. A spinning wheel and a few yards of handspun cloth was all the dowry. The bridegroom would accept nothing more.In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi marched to the sea beach at Dandi and broke the imperial salt law. The symbolic gesture set the whole country ablaze. Lal Bahadur Shastri threw himself into the struggle for freedom with feverish energy. He led many defiant campaigns and spent a total of seven years in British jails. It was in the fire of this struggle that his steel was tempered and he grew into maturity.

He bought his fiat car in installment of five years when he was active Prime Minister of India. Here photography is not allowed inside the house. His bravery and simplicity will remain in the heart of every Indian.
This typical Lutyenโs Bunglow at 1, Motilal Nehru place was the home of Lal Bahadur Shashtri since 1952 untill he passed away in Tashkent on 11th January, 1966. He lived here as a minister in the Government of India holding important portfolios like Railways, Communication, Commerce and Industry, and Home. In 1964 on assuming charge as Indiaโs second Prime Minister he decided to live in this bunglow instead of shifting to a bigger house. The personality of Lal Bahadur Shashtri is intimately connected with the memorial dedicated to him. The building represents the life and work of Lal Bahadur Shashtri

Great to see a legends place and his Fiat car
We are talking about former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who had taken a loan of Rs 5,000 from PNB. The loan amount was later paid by Shastris wife in the following years of his death in Tashkent.Recalling the instance, Shastris son and former Union Minister Anil Kumar Shastri had once told a newspaper that the PM did not own a car though the family members had been pestering him for one. He told his secretary to find out how much a Fiat car cost. The price was found to be Rs 12,000. But Shastri had only Rs 7,000 in the bank. He applied to PNB bank for a loan of Rs 5,000, which was sanctioned in less than two hours.Shastri promptly summoned the bank officer who had sanctioned the loan to his office to inquire if the bank was equally prompt in sanctioning loans to other people. He advised the officer to be prompt in meeting the requirement of the bankโs customers, recalled Anil Shastri.Shastri passed away before he could pay back the loan. After his death the bank asked his wife, Lalita Shastri for the repayment of the loan, which she repaid from the family pension. The 1964 model Fiat bearing number DLE 6 was cream coloured. It is now exhibited in Delhis Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial at 1, Motilal Nehru Marg.

This is a must visit place in Delhi, specially for school going kids. You feel so privileged that you are breathing in the same house where once True son of India lived. Also detailed briefing by Mr. Ajit was commendable
Historical place like this should be promoted in anyway. You might know about Lal bahadur Shastri but after visiting this place you will definitely have lifetime experience and knowledge about him.
Peaceful
Deeply impressed and influenced byย Mahatma Gandhiย (with whom he shared his birthday), he joined theย Indian independence movementย in the 1920s. Following independence in 1947, he joined the Indian government and became one ofย Prime Ministerย Nehrus principals, first asย Railways Ministerย (1951โ56), and then in a variety of other functions, includingย Home Minister. He led the country during theย Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. His slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) became very popular during the war. The war formally ended with theย Tashkent Agreementย on 10 January 1966; he died the following day, still inย Tashkent, with the cause of his death in dispute and it was reported to be a cardiac arrest but his family was not satisfied with it. Shastri was Congress loyalist. Although Shastri faced stiff opposition from within his party, his relationship with the party and his work aided his ascension to the office of Prime Minister.
A must visit place. Ask history of Shastri ji from the people who work there. They explain it beautifully.
Very nice place to visit. Jai jawan jai kisan was ghe most famous line by Shastri ji.
Loved it
Unique things preserved in its AS IT IS condition used by Late Honourable PM Lalbahadur Shashtri ji... Each and every Indian must visit to know about him, the real legend of our nation who lived only for our nation, our motherland.
Nice
Great place to know about Indian Ex Prime Minister Sh Lal Bahadur Shastri. A great man with simple living and high thinking.
It is a worth visiting palace one who stays in Delhi. The Museum is the true reflection of the man of masses . The attraction of the museum is Fiat Car (Del 6) which was used by the late Lal Bahadur Shastri which he brought on the demands of his kids, this was the time when Lal Bahadur became the Prime Minister of India and there children had to go to the school by tanga or hired car, due to having small amount he took the car on loan by Panjab national bank which installments were paid by his wifes pension after his demise. The kitchen, dinning hall, his used coats, clothes, kharaw and many souvenirs, awards offered by different countries and pictures with my eminent personalities too attracts the attention of the visitors.
Lovely and amazing to visit. The staff is very helpful and will guide you through the tour. Its a very peaceful place to visit. Everything has been conserved perfectly. It will let you travel through time, and see how Sashtri ji lived.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial and Museum is an amazing museum in Shastrijis home. It depicts the rooms and things of Lal Bahadur Shastri ji. His personal car and other belongings are also there.
Good place to visit. The memorial states that how great was late shashtri ji.
One of Indias greatest prime minister. Here you can see how humble and down to earth he was.
One should see this place. Alot can be known about our one of the most honest Prime Minister.
Perfect collection of shashtri ji and nehru ji political era ..orignal lettrs...gifts...pictures..๐๐
The place is well maintained. But I think it can be made better. There was no detail of how efficiently he led the nation during 1965 war with Pakistan and how he inspired the nation to become self sufficient by his lectures and giving the slogan Jai Jean Jai Kisan. Explanation with photographs is insufficient. The documentary on his life was too brief to his stature. It could be more elaborate.People of his times know about his strong will power.
Very good place to know an overview of Lal Bahadur Shastris life.. Talk with the persons there and they would describe a lot about Shastri jis life.
Most fabulous place...Well maintained ...Well cleaned..Peace full...And well educated staffs .....
