Very peaceful place. When you come here, you will feel that you have come to the door of God. You will feel very calm and a different peace. Whether you belong to any country or religion, you will be welcomed here. You must definitely come here on Christmas day because the church is most beautiful on that day and there is a special prayer on that day which is in 4 languages at different times. Thats why whenever you come to Delhi, definitely come here once.

It is also one of the biggest churches in Delhi. Easter and Christmas are the best time to visit as several major ceremonies are held during these festivals. The façade of the structure, which showcases several elements of the Italian style of architecture, is complemented by equally impressive interiors. Broad arches, murals depicting different events from the Bible, and a high curved roof are some other things to admire.Denomination/Affiliation: Roman CatholicLocation: Ashok Place, DelhiNearest metro station: Patel Chowk (1.1 km)

The Sacred Heart Cathedral stands out both in importance and in its appearance. The colonial architecture of this large church is fantastic to look at. Easy to spot from the road this place attracts people of various faiths not only for worship but also as a place to visit. The church is really beautiful from inside and is fairly large. The church is very peaceful and many people come visit this place during the day to have a quiet moment with God. Its a lovely church and the Christmas decorations are truly a sight. I love the Nativity scene and they have a full life size version. But it attracts so much of a crowd on the eve. Wouldnt advise coming here if you are looking to get away from the crowd. If you enjoy that, you will be greeted by hawkers selling Santa hats and reindeer horns as well as candles. Plus, full police security and barricades for crowd control. They mass is carried out in the field as there are too many people and the main church remains closed.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, also called the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Delhi, is a Roman Catholic church designed by Henry Alexander Medd, who was part of Lutyens team that designed much of New Delhi. One must not miss the two most important celebrations at the church which occur at the time of Easter and Christmas. The church must be visited during the Christmas week to enjoy the tune of jingles and lighted well-decorated trees in the vicinity of the church. One may visit the church between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. On Saturdays the church remains open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. So make sure you do not disappoint yourself by visiting it at odd hours.

The church building was designed by British architect Henry Medd, and is based on Italian architecture. A facade of white pillars supports the canopy, and on each side of the cathedrals entrance porch, there are circular arcaded turrets rising above the roof. The interior has a towering curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches.Behind the marble altar in the apse is a large fresco depicting the Last Supper. To the left in the side chapel is a large crucifix, next to it a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Cathedral Of The Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic cathedral belonging to the Latin Rite and one of the oldest church buildings in New Delhi, IndiaDelhi’s largest Catholic church has twice been graced by the presence of Pope John Paul II.Spread over 14 acres, which includes two schools, the cathedral is the headquarters of the Delhi Archdiocese. Completed in 1934, it was built 70 years after the city’s first catholic church, St Mary’s, near Delhi railway station.Henry Medd, who later became the chief architect to the government of British India, designed it. The red brick structure was selected from eight entries that were judged by a panel which included Edwin Lutyens, the architect behind New Delhi. The church has a massive vaulted ceiling under a towering curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches. The façade has mouldings and cupolas. The dark arches of the entrance enhance the building’s immensity. The altar is domed and of pure Carrara marble. The main fresco of Christ and his 12 disciples (who have green eyebrows and blue hair) is painted by an unknown artist. The artwork shows signs of age but still look glorious. The archbishop of Agra, who also laid the building’s foundation, presented the bell, vestments and altar furniture. On Sundays, hymns are sung on an electronic keyboard and services are offered in more than one language. (If you are lucky like me, you may find yourself in the middle of a wedding crowd.)Lepers and memento-sellers crowd the iron-gate outside. The worshipers thronging Sacred Heart Cathedral during Christmas Eve cause traffic jams each year.Where Opposite Gol Dak Khana, near Connaught Place Nearest Metro Stations Rajiv Chowk/Sardar Patel Sunday mass Summer: 6.30 am, 9 am, 11.30 am, 6.30 pm. The exterior gardens are well maintained and the grotto is worth a visit and a prayer. Do light a candle here if you can- there are vendors selling them outside. The church laid out in the shape of a crucifix is very beautiful on the inside. The Eucharist celebrations here are very meaningful and one must attend them. The priests here are very helpful and go out of their way to assist. The singing at Mass is also really good. Attending a Mass here really fills one with a sense of joy and a sense of peace.
