The temple was constructed during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Balbhadra Jain states that a Jain officer of the Mughal army is said to have kept a tirthankara statue in his tent for personal worship. The tent gradually started attracting other Jain army officers, and subsequently, a Jain temple was constructed at the site in 1656.[5] At that time, the temple was also known as Urdu temple (because it was located in an area called Urdu Bazaar) and Lashkari Mandir (laskhar means an army camp). Balbhadra Jain also mentions that there are several legends about the temple. One such legend claims that Shah Jahans successor Aurangzeb once ordered a ban on all musical instruments in the temple. However, miraculously, sounds of drums (nagadas) would be heard emanating from the temple despite inspections from the Mughal officers. Aurganzeb himself visited the temple to see the miracle, and finally, lifted the ban.

Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir (Śrī Digambar Jain Lāl Mandir) is the oldest and best-known Jain temple in Delhi, India. It is directly across from the Red Fort in the historical Chandni Chowk area.Old Delhi was founded by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628–1658) who built what is commonly known as the old city or walled city, surrounded by a wall, with the main street Chandni Chowk in front of the Red Fort, the imperial residence. Shah Jahan invited several Agrawal Jain merchants to come and settle in the city and granted them some land south of the Chandani Chowk around Dariba Gali.According to Jain scholar Balbhadra Jains compendium of Digambar Jain shrines in India, the temple was constructed during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Balbhadra Jain states that a Jain officer of the Mughal army is said to have kept a tirthankara statue in his tent for personal worship. The tent gradually started attracting other Jain army officers, and subsequently, a Jain temple was constructed at the site in 1656. At that time, the temple was also known as Urdu temple (because it was located in an area called Urdu Bazaar) and Lashkari Mandir (laskhar means an army camp). Aurganzeb himself visited the temple to see the miracle, and finally, lifted the banThe present-day temple buildings were constructed after the fall of the Mughal Empire, and date from 1878Balbhadra Jain states that one of the idols in the temple dates back to 1491, and was originally installed by Bhattaraka Jinachandra The Agrawal Jain community acquired three marble idols installed by Jivaraj Papriwal under the supervision of Bhattaraka Jinachandra in Samvat 1548 (1491 AD) for the temple. The main icon is that of Tirthankara Parshva. It is said that the deities in temple were originally kept in a tent belonging to an Agrawal Jain officer of the Mughal army.Other nearby temples include the Gauri Shankar temple and the Naya Mandir. The Gauri Shankar temple was built next to the Lal Mandir in 1761 by Appa Gangadhara, a Maratha Brahman in the service of the Scindia when Delhi was under their influence. In 1800-1807, Raja Harsukh Rai, the imperial treasurer obtained imperial permission to build a temple with a shikhara in the Agrawal Jain neighborhood of Dharamapura, just south of Chandni Chowk. Thus temple, known for fine carvings, is now known as the Naya Mandir New Temple.

A bit crazy, and chaotic feeling.unfortunately the bird hospital was closed when I went. But instead of seeing birds cared for, I saw a drunk man walk up with a bag and dump a paraplegic cat on the ground. The cat tried to crawl to a safe spot but couldnt move its back half of its body (probably run over by a car). The doorman eventually picked up the cat and took it to a garbage pile and put it there where it was less upsetting to see.Oh, and they offer marijuana for puja in the temple.

The temple is build-up of impressive red sand stone. It consists of a Manastambha column right in the front; a small courtyard that is being surrounded by a colonnade and the main devotional area on the first floor. In this temple there are a number of deities, the main deity is of Lord Mahavira who is considered to be the last Jain Tirthankara. This temple also contains the statue of Rishabhanatha, who is known to be the first Tirthankara, and that of Lord Parshvanath. It is a very peaceful and serene place for offering prayers. The temple is composed of detailed carvings and paintworks in the ante chambers. Devotees from across the world come for praying and offering fruits, grains, rice as well as candles. These lighted candles and the glazed paintwork create a serene atmosphere inside the temple premises. There is also a bookstore situated inside the temple complex that contains books related to the Jain culture and religion from all over the world.

Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is the best-known and the most ancient Jain temple in Delhi. Located in the Chandni Chowk area, in the vicinity of Red Fort, the striking building is made entirely out of red sandstone. Originally built in 1658, the temple underwent major modifications and alterations in the later years. Popularly known as Lal Mandir aka ‘Red Temple’, the temple is dedicated to 23rd Jain Tirthankara- Parshvanath. Besides the huge statue of Parshvanath, the temple also houses idols of Rishabhdev, Lord Mahavir and several other deities; the main devotional area is however present on the first floor. The shrine is famous in the city because of the massive avian veterinary hospital behind the main temple complex which is called Jain Birds Hospital. Inspired by Vardhman Mahavir’s message ‘live and let live’, the centre comprises of general wards and ICU and tends to birds and avian patients that need utmost care. Situated adjacent to the most chaotic area of Delhi, the temple is mostly popular for its striking architecture, beautiful carvings, pure gold artwork and frescos. Paryushan, Samvatsari, Jnaan Panchami and Deepawali are the major festivals celebrated at the temple and we recommend you to visit at the same time to be a part of the elaborate festivities.
