Lush green area with tight security around the area. One things is confusing that the Army personnel doesnt let you park your cycle at the front of the statue on the pavement. The board there says that one must not enter into the grassy area however on the pavement there is no such information. Morning sightseeing, weather and all the things were good

The massive, glistening black sculpture depicting Gandhi’s iconic Dandi March of 1931 stands proudly in the heart of the city, easily visible on the Sardar Patel Marg, near Willingdon Crescent. This poetic sculpture by veteran artist and sculptor Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury shows ten Indian people following Gandhi on his path-breaking Civil Disobedience protest, hence the name - Gyarah Murti. I was so excited to see this sculpture, my mom once told about this Dandi March statue in my childhood. A great representation of Dandi March 24-day march lasted from 12 March 1930 to 5 April 1930 as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly. Gandhi started this march with 78 of his trusted volunteers. The march spanned 220 miles (350 km), from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, which was called Navsari at that time (now in the state of Gujarat). Growing numbers of Indians joined them along the way. When Gandhi broke the British Raj salt laws at 6:30 am on 6 April 1930, it sparked large scale acts of civil disobedience against the salt laws by millions of Indians. No parking place available and we cannot stop our vehicles. 5-10 minutes is enough to take photos and visit this place.

Flip a 500 Rupee Indian currency note and you will see an image of Mahatma Gandhi leading ten people on a march. The iconic Gyarah Murti in New Delhi signifies genius of  Mahatma Gandhi, It was a stroke of inspiration to suggest that something as mundane as salt can shake the foundations of the mighty British Empire. The Gyarah Murti statue is an apt tribute to the historic Salt March to Dandi lead by the Mahatma.

The Vast SculptureGandhi’s iconic retinue in the sculpture includes a woman with her head covered following close after him; a cluster of three men including a turbaned Sikh visibly of high pedigree, a Hindu scholar with a topi and an emaciated Muslim peasant; a Hindu man wearing a turban as a mark of intellectual distinction, with a religious mark etched on his forehead; an impoverished peasant looking far ahead, bearing no marks of class, caste or religion on his body; a Christian priest; another woman in a skirt and a young boy egging on a weary old man to travel farther.Rich SymbolismThe portraiture of individuals participating in the Dandi March, and a modern rendition of that event in the past, symbolises the righteous anger of the citizenry. It is not an idealized piece of sculpture but one that contains the great truth about the people who succeeded in overthrowing the mammoth machinery of colonialism. The individuals in the frame are all arranged in a posture of determined forward movement. Gandhi leads them humbly with his head slightly bowed, looking to the ground. The others are pointing towards a distant but approachable destination with hands and eyes. The entire piece depicts and celebrates the spirit of collaboration. The maverick sculptor, with his eye for crucial detail, has represented them all with taut sinews, which shows a tense mood of anticipation and a suppressed exhilaration. Optimism is etched on their faces with hints of smiles. The figures are larger than life. The aim, clearly, is not a simplistic mimesis but an embellished representation of a nation’s idea of the self. There are no flags here, no marks of nationhood, but only a vast diversity of individuals making their way forward together. The Scalpel Behind The StoneThe prolific artist D.P. Roy Chowdhury (1899-1975), has created poetry in stone and on canvas. Throughout his life, he remained an artist who is said to have moved with and among the general public, choosing his figures and models from there. There has often been a lot of discussion about identifying the individuals of the Gyarah Murti group. But it is a pointless adventure, as those faces are recognizable not because they are famous, but because they belong to the common multitude. They are no one in particular, and yet all of us. His realism is mixed with a stroke of imaginative fantasy. He acquired his art and honed his skills under the expert tutelage of E. Boyes, Rabindranath Tagore and Hiranmoy Roy Choudhuri. In 1937, he was honoured by the British government as the Most Exalted Member of The British Empire, and in 1958, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. His litany of masterpieces includes Triumph of Labour and Madras and Martyrs, among memorable scores of others. This rendition of India’s political past does not fail to inspire awe despite the present day political climate being most unpromising, inspiring nothing but raw cynicism. So the encounter with the Gyarah Murti happens perhaps at an opportune moment, representing a moment of single nationhood before it got ideologically divided. Come witness the glory of our nation right here at Gyarah Murti!Where | Gyarah Murti - Near Willingdon Crescent, Sardar Patel Marg

I have drove past this beautiful statue several times. We cannot miss this fascinating statue when we travel from Delhi airport to Karol bagh or India Gate through SP Marg. We can see people taking selfies in front of this statue, which looks more beautiful when illuminated in the night. This statue represent Dandi March which was leading by our Rastrapita Mahatma Gandhi and this movement started with their fellows and lacs of freedom fighters on those days. Must visit place on 15 August or 26 January . Must you can feel how could they fight for us to British army No place for park your vehicle .One of the oldest structure, which represents the Dandi March by Gandhi ji, its been totally mesmerizing structure and represents how we fought with Britishers. The place is very soothing and reminds us the British Era. Its just on Sardar Patel Marg. One time visit is recommended. An iconic place in Delhi. You find this also in the currency notes if 500 denomination. If you are looking to go up close and click pictures guide can do that. In fact theres a small parking lot next to it. Being in a high security area not sure if you can move around freely in the vicinity as the boundary touches that of the presidents house. But worth a stop if you happen to be in Delhi
