The Zero Mile Stone in Nagpur stands testimony to this distinction that was awarded to the city by the colonial rulers. As of today, this stone stands tall and acts as a constant crowd-puller. This stone consists of a pillar made from sandstone. Four horses adorn the pillar giving it a distinctive look. The four horses are representative of the four cardinal directions. Tourists can be often seen engulfing the pillar and appreciating this historic monument. It has withstood the changing tides of time and stands majestically, spreading awe among its numerous spectators.

Nagpur is precisely at the centre-point of India and the zero mile marker is located here. The distances of various cities of India from this location is engraved on the milestone. This is a very historic location, however it feels as though this place has not got the recognition it deserves and looks and feels neglected. We need to treasure our national monuments and preserve and promote them as it is being done around the world.

Zero Mile Stone is a monument built by British during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1907 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The Zero Mile Stone consists of a pillar made up of sandstone and another small stone representing the GTS Standard Bench Mark, and four stucco horses that were added later. The height of the top of the pillar is 1020.171 feet above mean sea level. In 2008, The Times of India undertook to maintain the monument for the next 5 years.Contrary to the popular belief, there is no verifiable evidence that it is a monument locating the geographical centre of colonial India in the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra,  or that the Zero Mile Stone was erected by the British to use this point to measure all the distances. Nevertheless, the city of Nagpur lies geographically center to all the four major metros of India, viz. Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi.

This is a historical landmark in the city of Nagpur and is believed to be the geographical centre of India as the distances to other Indian cities were measured from this point during British rule. The place consists of a sandstone pillar to represent the zero mile marker and the symbolic statues of four horses installed next to the pillar. The place is open 24 hours and can be visited quickly while riding through the adjoining street also. The place need better maintenance to preserve its historical significance.

The large edifice can be made a little more prominent with proper signposts but all in all, as an outsider, i was happy with the information provided. Any travel enthusiast would be fascinated by this.

Known as the centre of Nagpur and all over India this Zero Mile Stone and the surrounding area are not in well maintained conditions. Currently it has lots of bushes to the surrounding. The tree branches are also falling on the erected Stone. As it is historically and geographically important place it requires special attention. Though it is place in a small area it could be developed to a worth seeing tourist place. Lit up lights can be installed surrounding it so that it could be seen beautifully during night. If possible small water fountain can also be installed to attract visitors. The area may be developed to a small park with well maintained grass on the floor.

A ten feet tall milestone that was built by the British a hundred plus years ago. This is claimed to be the geographical centre of India but no elaborate explanation could be found during my visit here. Some locals say that this milestone was built after a survey conducted by a British official and his team who surveyed India by walking all the way. This monument is on the road side and there isnt much of importance given to it. It is surrounded by a low circular wall and its area is just around 1000sqft approx . Very small importance given for a historically and geographical prominent place.

The zero mile stone of Nagpur is located near the road to Reserve Bank Square in Survey No 282.The period of the column is not mention on it. However, there is another stone nearby that indicates the standard benchmark, or elevation above sea level, and the year 1907 is mentioned on it. It appears, therefore, that the Zero milestone may have been constructed during this period. The column is constructed from sand stone; the base is circular and its diameter is 7.90 metres. Atop the circular base is a hexagonal column 6.5 metres in height. The hexagon is of side 1 metre each. Each face of hexagon has distance to various places mentioned on it, which are as follows:Name on Stone New Name Distance From Zero Mile StoneKowtah *Kawatha -62 Miles(Towards South)Hyderabad *Hyderabad -318 Miles(Towards SouthEast)Chandah *Chandrapur -125 Miles(Towards SouthEast)Raipore *Raipur -174 Miles(Towards East)Bhundarah *Bhandara -38 Miles(Towards East)Jubbulpore *Jabalpur -170 Miles(Towards NorthEast)Seonee *Seoni -79 Miles(Towards NorthEast)Chindwarah *Chhindwara -83 Miles(Towards NorthWest)Baitool *Baitul -101 Miles(Towards West)While mile stone of National Highway No 7 indicates distance to two extreme end of it as follows:*Varanasi -729 Kilometres(Extreme North end)*Jabalpur -273 Kilometres*Kanyakumari -1600 Kilometres(Extreme South End)*Hyderabad -485 KilometresSources:MTDC &Edits by me
