The Muri Abbey is a complex of buildings dating all the way back to 1064. It comprises of a beautiful baroque church, surrounded by an enclosed cloister and the convent. It also houses a small but excellent collection of volumes on nature and medicine, which includes fantastic printed works of Paracelsus, Albrecht Dürer, and a spectacular volume of the De Humani Corporis Fabrica. It holds many reliquaries, religious jewels and vestments. The full price ticket is 10 CHF and it is worth every penny. An audio guide is available for free in different languages. There are interactive displays all over the place to better understand the history of the buildings and the life of the monks.

The Muri monastery was founded in 1027 by Ita of Lorraine and her husband, the Habsburg count Radbot.It is a former Benedictine abbey and the listed monastery of the former Austrian ruling house Habsburg-Lothringen.The heart burial of the last Austrian Emperor Karl I, who died in 1922, took place here in 1971.Before visiting the monastery, however, you should definitely visit the museum.You will be introduced to the history of the monastery with a very interesting video.Then you get an overview of the most important bishops.The tour then leads through the cellar to the cloister with its impressive colored glasses.Before you go from the cloister to the church, you pass the Habsburg crypt, where the hearts of the Habsburg family members have been kept since 1971The baroque monastery church is one of the most beautiful and magnificent in Switzerland.There are parking spaces in front of the monastery.There is no restaurant in the building.

The abbey of Muri (Kloster Muri) was founded in 1027 by Count Radebot of Habsburg and his wife Ita of Lorraine. In 1032 the Benedictine monks of Einsiedeln founded a school there (the oldest in Argovia). Set on fire in 1300, devastated in the following centuries during the wars between the Hapsburg and Confederates, the abbey was rebuilt in 1532 by the abbot Laurenz von Heidegg and his successors in the following centuries. In 1841, the convent, after 814 years of monastic life, was suppressed. The monks, in 1845, moved to Bolzano in the Abbey of Muri-Gries. From 1953 the Confederation, the Canton of Argovia and the Catholic church of Muri brought the abbey back to its former glory.

Very nicely done, the museum gives a great insight into both the history of the monastery and the everyday life of the monks. The exhibition of the collection of medical history books is absolutely fantastic, a lot has been implemented in a small space!

A visit of Muri is necessary for the historical interest of the place but alas there are very few explanations in French and the audioguides are in German or English. Very beautiful baroque abbey and magnificent cloister with paintings on glass.

Impressive large former Benedictine monastery. If you stroll through the spacious grounds you can vividly imagine how life was here until the monastery was closed in 1841 and the monks moved to South Tyrol - where they now produce wonderful wine in the Muri-Gires monastery.Since the complex is a cultural asset of national importance, it is well maintained.In the integrated Muri Museum you can find out more about the active time in the monastery (for a fee) and guided tours are also organized.

The monastery was worth seeing, the history is clearly explained at the beginning and you can then go on your own exploration tour in the adjacent museum. The garden, a few adjoining rooms, the tombs and the church itself can be visited. Admission for adults CHF 10. The church itself is free.
