We went to Cafe Universal for breakfast. I loved the place. The food was awesome. Service was a bit slow. But we were a huge group of over 20 people so thats okay. I had sandwiches, french fries, and cold coffee. The ambience gives you the typical heritage feel of Bombay. Go for it if you are at Ballard Estate!
You will fall in love with the essence of this place. Old structured restaurant. Food quality can be improved.
I loooooved this place! I recently discovered this place when I was looking to eat a sizzler on a rainy day and was super happy to find this place. Firstly the ambience is really cute. It has this old Bombay Irani vibe. The ceiling with its wooden beams is really great and the tables and chairs are very reminiscent of what old Bombay restaurants used to be. There are drinks available at a reasonable price but it prides itself to be a beer place. The food is very good and quite affordable. We had two different meat sizzlers with cheese and veggies and it was more than enough for three people! Lastly, the service staff was really friendly. Couldn’t recommend this place more for some old Bombay feels and charm!
Best irani cafe around in terms of food, in my opinion. In terms of ambiance definitely the best.
This place is my all time favourite. Its cozy ambience and courteous staff ensures you have a great meal. I really enjoy the Prawns Pecking Rice and the Tandoori Platter. If youre looking for a dine-in thats relaxing and not upbeat, Cafe Universal it is.
They have a beautiful ambience, and decor. They have ample space for big groups as well as singles.Service: Its good. Though personally I have a suggestion they should serve water before it is asked for. Thats one thing they do not do.Food: Quantity wise it is good. Taste is average whether it is their steak sizzler, or mutton pulao. The caramel custard definitely needs work and lacked taste as well as appearance.
You get what you see kind of place - simple cafe to grab a beer and some food before heading out to the town for a night out. It is one of those places where you either end up after partying some place else or you start from here. We usually go as a group, get a beer or two have some sauages and then get going. Clean, good and quick service, clean restrooms and has an old world meeting place kind of a vibe. I have never seen the place crowded , so you can sit and have a chat.
Just at the corner, a lovely restaurant. Ample seating.Still Old Charm and elegant interiors. Very well done up. Restaurant was very clean. They serve both food and drinks (including alcohol). We tried the,1) Meat Chilly (dry, chinese style)2) Mutton Dhansak (Parsi special, rice with gravy)3) Roast Meat Sandwich (Meat Chilly Fry in toasted double decker slice bread)4) Caramel Custard (soft and fluffy, the best Ive ever tasted)The dishes were all super and tasty. Prices was alright.Service was fast and smiling. Lots of foreigners regularly visit this restaurant.
Excellent place for a casual evening meet with friends. Superb ambience in wood, old Irani cafe type round tables also there, unassuming place. Serves great food. Mostly popular for beer and other drinks.Very old joint now renovated. Was Very popular with sailors.
The menu was very limited but the dansak was good
🎇 A historic cafe at the heart of the city of Bombay, what else would you need to get all the vintage feels?📌 Introduced by my sister, I finally visited this beautiful cafe. A peaceful place with open doors and windows, it is a break from all the congested closed spaces with ACs.🍻The food is fine, ordered Chicken lollipops to comments our drinks - quite decent and tasty.🌌The ambience give you a feeling of sitting inside an antique classy place with a big vintage wall clock placed carefully at the middle of the BIG wall.🍾Bottles of alcohol placed as decoratives adds a dash of awesomeness to the whole place.💸Quite high on price, but worth it- the ambience, the booze and the people there.🙋Its in the ground floor, fully accessible to all.🌈 Add ons : Beautiful paintings and curved steel furniture.Do visit once!✅
Cafe Universal has a pretty sophisticated and elegant environment. The staff here is well behaved and respectful. The cafe is located in the midst of Mumbai and hence has a lively feel to it. Their food is also tasty and well prepared. I had went there with my friends to hangout and have a good time . We decided to order two Cold Coffees and one Coke Float which btw is so much more better than any Float I had ever had. For food we went with Nachos and Mushroom Sizzler. The food was hot and delicious. Only one drawback, I unfortunately found a worm in my sizzler and the staff were very kind to not add the sizzler to the bill. But thats a tip, if you do visit a place that has a dim lighting be sure to check your food properly. Other than that I would definitely recommend this place to everyone.
Little to No authentic items in the menu. Place is a century old and kind of poetic. Not recommended if you are there for authentic Parsi food.
I use to love this place a lot, literally start of my love life. However, today most of my favourite food menu was missing. Plus, they charged extra 5 rs on normal water bottle
I recently discovered this place when I was looking to eat a sizzler. Were much delighted to visit such an old legendary cafe running since 1921. Firstly the ambience is really awesome and cossy. It has this old Bombay Irani vibe. The ceiling with its wooden beams is really great and the tables and chairs are very reminiscent of what old Bombay restaurants used to be. There are drinks available at a reasonable price but it prides. The food is very good and quite affordable.I tried their chicken sizzlers it was really good and something different......I also tried fish and chips simple but tasty as pomfret was served........Also tried typical parsi tea which was ok.....Would like to visit this place again to try something new.
Excellent place for a quick beer and great Iranian Parsi food! Sizzlers are amazing too!
This place has a nice rustic feel to it. It has souvenirs from different places around the world which add to its ambience. Now on to the food - generous portions, tasty, has a wide variety on the menu from Irani to Parsi to continental. We had ordered fish and chips - really liked, chicken roast fry - was kinda bland and not what we had expected so disappointed with that, and lastly ghormeh sabzi mutton - liked. Was my second visit and would definitely visit again.
I loved the place. Its a normal cafe but the timings of serving specific food is too strict. On the nearby table two foreigners ordered 1 Tea & 1 Coffee at 2.30pm and waiter said that Sorry maam, it will be only served after 3pm. I was a bit shocked to know as the name of this restaurant is Universal Cafe then Tea & Coffee should be atleast available all the time. And the foreigners were disappointed and just went off.I had just went to chill with my friend & to have a beer and some munchies with it over gossips.Too pricey because of foreign attraction.Beer & Quality of French Fries was good. Its a Retro Classic kind of Place. No hard drinks options though.Looking forward to visit again. 🙂
I felt personally this is the perfect place if you wanna catch up on a quick beer and try some exclusive beef starters. They give free peanuts :)Relaxed Ambience.
Very friendly, great menu and super location... x
This is one cozy Irani place. The food is amazing. The choice of drinks is good too. There is a particular warmth to this place and makes it good for a family to hang out too. We ordered one O. M. G Burger between two. We actually exclaimed OMG! the portions are good...! Overall it is a lovely place. Love the food and the decor.
Go for the old bombay charm. Amazing decor.
Came all the way from Navi Mumbai on Sunday (10/01/21) at 7pm.The cafe was closed. As per timing mentioned on Google, the cafe should have been open.Check before you go. The cafe is opened and closed as per wish and fancies of the owner.

Correct location
This place is quite calm and comfortable. Even on a weekend it was peaceful. U can chat over starters n chilled drinks for hours with Ur friends or loved ones.Suitable for family dine outI specifically liked the furniture and ambience....simple yet antique n classy.Food- starters were good but didnt much liked sizzler as it was not as tasty as expected.More options for nonveg loversU get parking easily. The staff is polite and friendly.Overall I liked the place for ambience, drinks n food.Would love to go there again.
The place is beautiful and simplistic. The food is good too and the portion sizes are amazing. We tried the veg burger, garlic and mushroom veg sizzler and Hakka noodles. All of which were quite good. The price is on the higher side though. They have a good collection of local wines which one should definitely try.
Love this place special in the evening ...You can have good time 🕒 with friendsBarbeque items are likely good with drinksNice atmosphere.... Feeling relax after office hours.... 😉
This place has such a lovely vibe! Huge French windows and heaps of natural light — no air conditioning but you’ll still feel pleasant on a hot summer afternoon with a pint of beer by your side! It isn’t noisy. it’s not the food but the ambience that defines this place (:Food 3/5Ambience 5/5Service 4/5
Lovely place to unwind with a beer and a steak. No music so u can chat tomorrow comfortably. Very open layout so you can see directly outside. Very old restaurant so the furniture etc is vintage and classy.
Must visit place in fort (Near CSMT station)Tasty foodGood serviceNice ambianceLittle bite costly but worthYou can have veg as well as non veg with soft or hard drinks
The food and the ambience was lovely.Id come here for a friends birthday party and there was 8 of us who were eating drinking and having fun but the service staff was very cheerful and supportive and didnt make it an issue. Also the sizzlers were way better than most other places Ive been too.The burgers may need a different take on them but you cant expect a lot when at a Parsi eatery.Beer tower prices and quality was great.Overall a great value for money and lovely warm wooden interiors make you feel right at home.
Good Ambiance and food quality and quantity is good
Good cafe. Very nice place to sit and enjoy your drinks. Was not very crowded being a Sunday.
Very good place. Has a nice look to it. Food is also quite great. Vegetable burger and mashed potatoes are a must.
The food is really very tasty. The sizzlers here are good. They dont have much options for desserts. The ambiance is very chilled out and they provide good service. You can go here with friends as well as family.
Amazing food especially cheese chiily garlic toast. Friendly staff... Good services.... Good menu of food and alcoholic drinks.
Best bread pudding Ive ever had!Ill definately go to this place just to get some more. The cafe is spacious, very well ventilated. Good place to sit for a bite or drink peacefully.Food is good. Reasonable rates (for both alcohol and food) and fair portion size. Service is quick and staff is cordial.
Quirky decor, light and airy with great food - especially Prawns Manchurian. Service rather slow though, even when not busy.
Cozy place to hangout with family and friends. The deco is refreshing and young. Clean place. Staff is very friendly. If you want a break from spicy massala food, then the place to be. A little bit pricey.

Very nice. Cozy place. Prompt service. Food fairly good. Quantity good. Quiet most probably because Sunday evening. Very Airy. Enjoyed. Close to my College GDC.
A must visit as it will transport you back to an old Bombay era. Try the Parsi dishes and sizzlers from the menu. Most are pretty decent! Amazing place for a relaxed old school type brunch/lunch/dinner with family/friends.
I always liked this place until our experience of yesterday evening. We ordered few appetizers and beer including Budweiser and White Owl (ACE).We didnt notice the MFG date of the beer at first, since we always had a trust this cafe serves quality food and drinks. However, at the time of billing, we noticed that the beer White Owl was outdated and was already expired. Even after raising the concern with the Cafe owner, he showed no courtesy not to charge us for the expired beer and took the full amount instead.I am for sure going to avoid this place in future since we have lot of options near to Fort area. This place isnt recommended at all now.
Absolutely fantastic food here!! Especially the Thai curries and garlic naan. Lovely staff. Sam is particularly friendly and nice. The Thai red curry is THE BEST curry around. Highly recommended this place.
This restaurant is located just 10 mins walking distance from the CST Local Train Station📍They serve many dishes which vary in styles. They also serve alcohol with a full bar available. The decor is really something you can look forward to, the ambience is very peaceful & calm gives you a sense of relaxation & they have an ancient/old but beautiful feel to it.The prices over here could be a bit high but the food taste & quantity makes up for it.What I had:-Starters:-✓Cheese Balls🍡🧀✓Chicken Chilly Boneless (Dry)🍗(PS: The starters were filling enough to keep us full)They even have indoor & outdoor seatings available, which could accommodate quite alot of people. The service was good had a great time visiting here👍
Cafe Universal has an old world charm and ambience due to the fact that its interiors are spacious with high ceilings, large doors that let in natural light and the fact that it is located in a 100 year old heritage building. It is a popular place for late evening beers, and snacks. Many foreigners also visit the place and that gives it an international feel to it. It is accessible as it is on the main road. But that also means that there is no parking facility and finding a place to park is almost impossible. It is also not a place for taking family with young children as the clientele mostly enjoy their alocoholic drinks and beer. The food varies from good to average. Service is prompt and the staff is attentive.
The cafe has a beautiful ambience typical to colonial south Mumbai cafes. There is a parking lot outside which makes things easier. The food could be better but the place has a nice warm feeling perfect for a relaxed meal over drinks.
Best lime soda I have ever had. Service a little slow at times.
This place stands out for me mainly due to its art nouveau décor, something that you rarely see in Mumbai, which has far more examples of art deco.In terms of food, this establishment rests firmly in the Irani Café category, featuring a menu starring the usual suspects. I would strongly recommend the tried and tested one two combination of a cold glass of beer paired with a piping hot burger. The OMG used to be one of our standard orders, three (or four?) juicy meat patties stuffed into a burger that can only be held together by a steak knife. Order at your own risk. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but this is Ballard Estate, and its a nice place in a nice area. Overall its a nice place to grab lunch with some friends.
Irani cafe... Will give feel of old 80s and 90s cafe showed in movies... Ambience is good.. Staff is very humble.... Must visit during eveningsss... Good place to catch up with your loved ones or buddies... Must visit..
A great spot to grab a couple of drinks near a CST station area. A short walk away from the station, this place offers decently priced drinks and food with a chilled ambiance (non AC only). The food is Parsi cusine and continental mainly. A nice place to catch up for a few drinks and a meal near CST station.
The ambience etc is nice but food was just about average. Ordered kebabs and the mutton kebab was just not edible though the chicken one was comparatively better. Chinese starters were ok so ordered Chinese mein course as well. Again just about edible. Wouldnt really recommend this place to anyone. Best avoided though it seems to be popular with many people coming on weekends.
Nice experience. The helper Vasu was a nice person. The food they serve is good. Service is good as well. No frills - Old Irani place, off the city coast at Ballard Estate.
A place which boasts of being in service since 1921... The fact that it has stood the test of time is in itself a testimony to the success.... The ambience and the food makes up for a great place to hang out with friends or colleagues after a tiring day!
Lovely place for lunch beer and desserts. Loved the fried rice and prawn starter. We ordered cheesy toast for starter and the chicken Manchurian was okay.
Beer pitcher is a go to beverage when in a group. They give you complimentary cheese bites along with it. Fries have masala sprinkled on top. Overall a good cozy place to visit in Mumbai.
This place is located near RBI in South Mumbai. It is a typical Mumbai open air cafe (does not have air conditioning) which makes it a perfect place to visit during monsoons for some tap beer. The place is neat, clean and aesthetically done up. The food also is very good here.
A legendary place in mumbai ....... superb food..... great burgers....... not recommended for a vegetarian person....... overall a great experience........
Excellent place... Absolutely cool on a very hot day.. the kheema was scrumptious with the warm bread and chilled beers... And the ambience is magnificent... A must place to visit...
Very nice and delicious food served. Courteous service. Economically priced.
