BEST general manager Jagdish Patil is to be saluted for his drive to increase bus transport in mumbai. I have travelled round the world and apart from Singapore and the UK, I believe Mumbai has the best coverage of urban transport in the world. In the 1950s to 1970s, BEST made significant strides to cover all parts of rural Mumbai. However, at present other modes have taken their toll on BEST services, which has not taken citizens suggestions seriously.Take Andheri East for instance, there is no service to link East to West Andheri so commuters could travel onwards to places like Worli and beyond. Places like Bandra, Goregaon West have buses right outside as you come out of the platforms but for Andheri East to get a bus to Takshila, Model Town or Majas depot you have to travel under the dirty Metro underbridge to catch their bus services. Result – most take autos or cabs and the buses are running half empty. Why did the BEST not send the rickshaws under the METRO and put the buses outside the railway station, so passengers will definitely take a bus that is waiting there. How can you get a passenger to use the bus services when the bus stop is so far, far away. You have defeated the purpose of public transport since all prefer to catch a cab or auto instead. Buck up BEST and make it convenient to connect with other modes of transport.
