Walkeshwar TempleWalkeshwar Temple also known as the Baan Ganga Temple is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. The temple is close to Banganga Tank. The temple and the attached fresh water Banganga Tank were built in 1127 AD by Lakshman Prabhu, a Goud Saraswat Brahmin minister in the court of Silhara dynasty Kings. The Walkeshwar temple was originally built by the kings of the Silhara dynasty, who ruled Bombay from the 9th to the 13th century. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century and was reconstructed by a business person and philanthropist from Mumbai in the 17th Century. Pilgrims flock to the temple during the full moon and new moon to worship the deity and are a superb time to visit the temple to witness its reverence in full glory. It is located at 40, Banganga Cross Ln, Teen Batti, Malabar Hill, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400006. The Banganga Tank, belonging to the temple, was also first constructed at this time. The tank was rebuilt in 1715 out of a donation for the temple by Rama Kamath. The main temple has been reconstructed since then and is at present a reinforced concrete structure of recent vintage.Legend has it that the Walkeshwar temple was built by Ram using sand, hence the name Walukeshwar Walu (Sand) Eshwar (God) which has over a period of time become Walkeshwar. The temple is open from 5 a.m to 9 p.m.Photos by Viswas Menon(c) Viswas MenonWrite up compiled by Viswas Menon

The area has many big and small temples.Banganga watertank at the rearside. The waterbody is huge and has ghats all around. It is surrounded by many temples.Priest performing pujas and some having bath in the tank is a usual site. However, cleanliness is not to be seen. The place is highly unclean and any enthusiastic tourist would be disappointed with its condition today. Some ducks are to be seen in the area.Roads leading to the temple are quite narrow so avoid cars.

Particularly interesting is the history of the water tank and the fact that there is a fresh water lake, meters away from the salted sea. The place is really old, so i liked the vibes. Water levels have decreased as compared to earlier. Nearby places are Nehru Planetarium. If youre a Ramayan enthusiast/Ram worshipper, you will like the place.

Good place. Carry some bread pieces to feed the 50 ducks. They also eat coriander I think. The water is constantly filled in the tank by bmc water connection every day and every day drained into the sea. Hence the upkeep of the place is very good. One can even swim in the tank . Monsoon will be great time since the water level is 3 steps up then pre monsoon.

Very ancient Hindu temple. Its believed that God Ram has come here during his wandering days when he was exile for 14 years. He was very thirsty and there was no lake or pond around. He prayed to Goddess Ganga and she appeared there, with which he quest his thirst. That is called Banganga lake. And thats how Walkeshwar is famous for both the Banganga lake and shiva temple along with many small small temples around.

Walkeswar temple is situated on the banks of Babganga. The antiquity of Banganga, the original spring of pure drinking water below sea level, is true. The water had come from Sri.Lakshmans arrow that he had shot into the earth, to produce water at Sri Ramjis request to quench the thirst of the Vanar Sena. This is an ancient site. The water here is clean, good and has never dried up. There are many temples built around the Banganga. The main being the Sivalinga Ramji built with this own hands. The Walkeswar Kasi matt temple stands next to it.Another rare one is the Stri yoni that is placed on the banks of the Banganga . This is Aryan custom of praying to Devis Yoni.Lamps are lit near this rare bimbam(deitys sculpture )The yoni is placed near a very old human form Siva in Trancendental pose.People come from all over to have a drop of water in their forhead from the Banganga and to offer prayers in all the temples around it. This is also a heritage site.I wish the Government would give support to the people who maintain the Banganga and the surrounding temples. This can be a famous site for our tourists and travellers to come visiting. Prince William has visited this site with his wife.
