Date of visit: 17th March 2018Erected in 1864, the synagogue was constructed by David Sassoon in Victorian style for the growing population of Baghdadi Jews who had fled from persecution by the governor of Baghdad Dawud Pasha.Sassoons grandson Jacob, in 1884, built the Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue in Kala Ghoda which still exists. In 1940s, 30000 Jews were registered in Bombay alone. In 1948 after the creation of Israel, majority of them migrated there. As of 2017, only 5000 Jews live in Mumbai.Note: For mobile photography, I had to pay Rs. 500 to the caretaker, for which I duly receieved a receipt.
Looks very nice. Can some Jew brother take me inside and explain me the basic principles of Jews and their prayers?
One of the most sought worship place for jewish living in mumbai
Good Synagogue. Big and quite. Prayers dont take place now as Jewish community requires minimum 10 people for the prayers and there are not required number of people.
Beautiful example of Jewish Mumbai. Daily services don’t necessarily start on time. No A /C Can get quite hot inside.
The building with soothing colour (sky blue)thats what attracted me towards it...but couldnt get entry inside the synagogue ( only parsi or Christians are allowed)
This Jewish Synagogue is a hidden gem in the By ulla area which is bustling with offices, banks, schools and street vendors..Great tower and Hebrew lettering made me look back while on a business visit to the next door Axis Bank..Badly needs renovation..Only visiting Jews are to take care as there are only a few staying behind, not re-emigrated to Holy land.
One of the few Synanogues of the city was commissioned by a very renowned amd wealthy businessman of the city Sir David Sassoon... He was a very influential business man who built school, library at kala ghoda, masina hospital and so on...
Built in 1864, Magen David Synagogue (Jewish Temple) is an epitome of perseverance, communal bond and courage to begin a new life. Persecuted by Dawud Pasha, Ottoman governor of Baghdad, Bhagdadi Jewish families fled their homeland and took shelters in various countries. Many came to India (They had trade connections with India going on since Ancient Roman Empire). Built by David Sassoon (Many other structures in Mumbai and Pune including Sassoon Docs of Mumbai and Sassoon Hospital in Pune are built by the same family) at Byculla, Mumbai, this Synagogue today reminds the Jewish Communities to steer ahead of their struggles and start everyday with courage, together. For a curious mind, a Jewish temple built in a Victorian style architecture situated among the Muslim, Parsi and Christian community at Byculla, will break many barriers of prejudices and biases that we have towards a religion and its people. Also visit the Christ Church (built in 1815) that is just stone throw away from the Synagogue.
Good
Good place to know about Jewish culture of Mumbai
This is one of the larger synagogues in Mumbai and pretty famous too. It was built by the Sassoon family and is worth visiting if you are in the Nagpada area near Byculla. Thanks For Reading 📖
The synagogue is situated near the Nagpada bus stop.It is believed to be that Byculla used to have a substantial number of Baghdadi Jews living in and around 18 and 19 century. It is named after Sir David Sassoon , a wealthy Jewish Merchant who lived in this locality .The architecture though has been similar to Victorian architecture, but there has been some indo saracenic styles to be seen .The synagogue is one of the largest in Asia outside of Israel.Sabbath is followed on Saturday , thus the synagogue is off limits to public on that day .
