Such a beautiful place it is, in terms of architecture. I never knew that such a beautiful place do exist in Mumbai. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go inside as they have specific visiting hours. It’s more beautiful inside actually, gonna visit for sure. People doing Mumbai darshan should visit this place which is worth it.
Many visitors to India are surprised to learn that the country has a thriving Jewish community dating back more than 2,000 years. The tour begins with a brief historical overview of the country’s Jewish population and their different sects and will include stops at some of the area’s most beautiful synagogues and historic sites. The Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue is one of the tour’s highlights. It is noted for its amazingly beautiful and ornate interior, and the David Sassoon Library.Transportation and guide are included on the four-hour tour, but food and drink are not, so it’s best not to begin on an empty stomach.
Beautiful place and lovely staff..they allowed a friend and I to come in after hours because I’d come the day before during services, when I couldn’t take pictures. Amazing decoration and lots of great info on boards around the first floor. Took pictures so my mum back in the states could see. enjoy!
The policeman sitting outside asked me why I wanted to go inside the synagogue. According to him theres nothing inside. However, after I insisted on going inside, he asked me to get a photocopy of my Identity Card. Once I got the photocopy and filled in my details I was allowed to go inside accompanied by a staff member. Photography is banned inside the synagogue, but on requesting, he allowed me to click a single photograph of the altar. The synagogue is beautiful. It has a very peaceful and soothing vibe. The light entering through the stain glass windows adds to its beauty. There is a Torah kept in the sanctuary. The staff member explained various parts of the synagogue. There are paper caps for sale, but are very expensive.Even the exterior is very beutiful. The combination of blue and white colours is very appealing and draws the attention of every person walking on the street
This 19th-century synagogue has only a small congregation today. The structure was recently restored. There is no elevator and a lot of stairs on the inside. Inside the building, photography is only permitted with a fee (approximately $7). Interesting history of a small community that was heavily involved in Mumbais commercial and civic life.
Today, only a few people attend this 19th-century synagogue. The building has just been repaired. On the inside, there is no elevator and a lot of steps. Photography is only permitted within the building at a fee (about $7). A fascinating history of a little group that played an important role in Mumbais business and civic life.
Such a beautiful place! It has recently been restored by a popular architect and is a heritage site and a place of worship for the Jews. Entry is restricted to Jews, I guess, unless with special permission, like we had.Its situated in the lane behind Kala Ghoda and is a beautiful structure, both inside and outside. The lane is peppered with other beautiful designer and luxury stores and graffitied walls, making it a picturesque view.
Went on a Saturday but they didnt open the gate saying it will be open on Sundays. Also told us to pay 500 rupees to take pictures, I understand that as the pictures of the inside of synagogue were beautiful on Google and they have the right to ask for the price for such beautiful structure. But when we requested that we will not be in India the next day, still didnt consider and didnt let us in even after we asked to pay. A great opportunity missed just for some arrogant guards, maybe they should have some additional rules for tourists who admire art.
Open for anyone to visit and take a walk into the synagogue except Friday evening and Saturday morning when only Jews are allowed as thats their prayer time. Not at all crowded. Ill say highly underrated places. Worth a visit. Max it will take 30 minutes to see the place in details.
The security man was constantly hovering over me to make sure if I took a single photo I would have to fork out the 500 (??!??!!?) rupee fee, and when I started reading a history booklet provided on a back bench he said after 5 minutes that its for sale and not for free reading so buy or go away. Why so hostile? This is my house of worship and my experience was made unnecessarily unpleasant. A very nice building but the atmosphere is less than welcoming
Beautifully and authentically restored 100 year old synagogue. Happy to know that corporates are backing so many such projects. Well worth a visit. Xerox of ID required. Please check the timings
Went in July 2019. You need a xerox copy of any identification document (PAN, Aadhar, driving license) to go inside. The place is newly renovated (reopened on Feb 2019). Once you go up two flights of wooden stairs, you are greeted with a large prayer hall. The hall itself is huge, peaceful, ornate and has beautiful stained glass with flower paintings above the room lodging the Book of Torah. The room has various Jewish books on display as well as prayer benches to sit on. We had a very informative talk with the Rabbi, he was very sweet.Prayers are held on Friday evening 6:30p.-7:30pm and Saturday 9:30am-10:30am as per the information we received. Ladies hall is a level up from the main prayer hall but general visitors are not allowed there.Entry is free but photography is charged Rs.500 and video is charged Rs.1000.
I had never been to a Synagogue ever and had went on the Opening Ceremony after the renovation and was in awe of it. Its beautifully done, very clean, neat. Must visit once.
Visited on last Sunday. This is one of the oldest Synagogue in the Mumbai. Built in 1884 by Jacob Elias Sassoon. A non Jews also can visit this Synagogue. Recently there were some renovation work and now it looks so beautiful. This is also popular place for tourists.
It is a very beautiful place with a comforting, peaceful and welcoming feeling. A true sign of Indias diverse culture and the rich heritage of Jews
Stunning place, full of a loving, giving energy. As for the Rabbi... a very wise, kind soul connected to the Divine.Highly recommended.
It was a beautiful place. The architecture was old but beautiful. It has an aura of its own.
The biggest Synagogue that many have come across. It faces the west, and is beautifully restored in White and Blue post 26/11. It now has full time security, and only Jews are permitted entry. Understanding the architecture of it is truly amazing and the fact that its been built by the Jacob Elias Grandson of David Sassoon in the name of his father Eliyahoo. Its an adorable structure right in Kala Ghoda and must be a must visit on the list of every Mumbaikar !
Loved our visit. Guarded well maintained.
While the outside is run down, interior especially the ark are great. One sees the Sassoon influence and Silk Road/ British connections. Alas, except for a book of Jews in India, not great gift items. Thanks For Reading 📖
Steeped in history, it hides within some very quaint alley ways at Fort. Its a must visit spot for anyone who is interested in Mumbai citys history and heritage.
Sadly the Synagogue is only open one (1) day a week, hence I cannot review the interiors. This is rather idiosyncratic considering that this is an iconic structure with history, that should be shared with the public.
Good place and good people, enjoyed the friday eve prayer.
Very beautiful from outside, i havent been inside because entry was closed
It is a place of worship for Baghdadi Jews. (There is a similar synagogue in Byculla) It is 135 years old (1884) and has been renovated recently. David Sassoons (Remember the library on the main road!) two sons dedicated this to his memory. The two landmarks for this place are Rhythm house and Kyber Hotel. Visitors are allowed from 10AM to 5PM. The prayers take place on Friday and Saturday evening. The main priest reads out the Torah to the congregation. Its beautiful blue is a real attraction. The coloured stained glasses inside are a feast to the eyes.
Its one of Mumbais beautiful synagogue and its more than 100yrs old..
Its a prayer place for Jews,Well maintained place.Interior design ,decoration is excellent in line with the trend in those day when it was built.
Great place to visit. Excellent spot for photoghraphy and also a peace full environment
The place is historical and was made by the Jewish pioneer of the city, the area Kala ghoda has many monuments dedicated to art which gives one the sense that it was valued very much at a certain time and played a big part of the culture of the people living there.Alot of photo opportunities lie there if youre looking for a shoot especially the synagogue and the black horse statue there. The synagogue sells the holy scriptures and attire to all and also hosts Jewish prayers every Sunday which is for the Jewish people.
Small but good place. Staff extremely good. It needs some restoration. you need your identity proof
Famous as the blue synagogue, it was in a run down state. Has been recently restored, the façade, artwork, has been restored to resemble the original decor as closely as possible. A beautiful synagogue in the heart of kala ghoda area, an amazing cultural gem of the jewish community in Bombay. Visited it as part of a guided tour.
Kneseth Eliyahoo is a Jewish Synagogue. It was recently restored by an architectural conservation firm Abha Narain Lambah Associates.
A stunning (restored) and iconic Sephardi shul, with warm people and beautiful services in the Bhagdadhi tradition. Siddurs in English and French if needed. A hidden treasure in Mumbai.
Very nice placeA must see in mumbaiGood architecture and interior
This place has been renovated and looks great.
Originally built by the sasson family, and was lately restored to resemble its beautiful past
One of the very few synagogues in our country. The place has tight security hence please inquire about the timings before visiting the place.
Beautiful Heritage structure... security all the time... to visit the place an identity proof is compulsory... in secluded location...
Beautiful structure with good color scheme..
Just renovated in what is said to be the original colours... Well worth a look
Beautiful synagogue! Security is tight, but for good reason.

Nice place, I havent seen such place in my life
Simply beautiful. Great restoration.
Nicely preserved the architecture.
Impressive building, friendly people, a bit expensive though.
Amazing variety and taste but a bit expensive 😋

Beautiful historic synagogue and well-maintained center of Bombay. Photography inside the synagogue costs 500 rupees. Plus free entry in passport presentation.
I was there on Shabbat and in addition to the prayers there are also Indian-style meals - free for Israelis and Jews of the world. Close to the tourist area of Kibla. It is highly recommended ! Wonderful and welcoming hosts!Active only on Saturdays.
