The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National park , it is located in Borivali. Easily accessible through Buses and Rickshaws. It is about 5-6 kms from the main gate and you can either take your own vehicle or local govt. bus. There about 107 clusters of caves of various sizes. They have different formats where some are plane square rooms with gates and then there are some with elaborate sculptures. Govt has tried to get the caves to be in best shape as much as it can. If you climb high enough , youll get birds eye view of the city.मातृभाषा में इसे कांहेरी लेणी कहा जाता है।

Recommed that you avoid this place in the summer cause the heat fills up the caves and you burn up when you visit. These are a heritage site and have various picturesque locations that are a proof to Indias enriching history. Please carry sufficient water as it takes almost 2 hours to visit the different caves. The caves are currently closed (fue to COVID) but worth a visit when they open again..

Kanheri caves (temporarily closed) will give goosebumps to those who are fascinated about old historical structures. Keep your phone away and take time to soak in the efforts taken to construct this rock cut marvel. A walk along the pillared corridors is just breathtaking. Avoid March, April & May because the heat will cook you and your experience. The word Kanheri literally means Black Mountain and so its best if visited during monsoons.Currently this place is closed due to Covid-19. But its a great place and worth visiting once in your life. Entry for Kanheri Caves cost about Rs 20 or so. Do carry extra; Rs 70/adult for National Parks entry

It is one of the most ancient cave complexes in India comprises 109 rock cut caves and situated in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park near to Borivali in Mumbai. Probably, such an ancient and valuable cave complex was not found the required attention by the Authorities and public. They contain Buddhist sculptures, paintings and inscriptions dating back from First to 10th century CE. These caves demonstrate that there were well established Buddhist viharas.

I have visited kanheri caves in 2019. Nice place. First you have to enter in national park located in Borivali East. Ticket price was ₹50 in 2019. National park is boring place which I found , but kanheri caves is an interesting one. Its kind of adventurous , you can go with public buses. , Bst is there which run bus services inside the national park. Buses are very crowded I would prefer you should go with your own private vehicles. Nice place for weekends , for family. If couples then visit on week days that should be preferable. You can see good scenery , powai lake if you are able to see. , Small beauty of borivali or you can say mumbai , visible from their. An excellent place for photography.

Situated inside the Beautiful Sanjay Gandhi national park, these caves are said to be one of the Oldest Buddhist Caves. Even today, the sandstone structures remind us of the period and how the monks would have lived here. There are so many caves - even on the Hill Top and people say, that many are still underground, so the actual number is in-fact unknown. The premises has many water-falls and streams flowing - especially during monsoon, which gives this place a heavenly appearance. If you have a keen eye for architecture-Design-photography - then its a Must Visit!

Which is pretty challenging. There are many caves around here to explore. You’ll be amazed to see them. How well planned the caves were built and the small steps to access them. Inside the caves, there is a large Vihara (Prayer hall) and stupas, buddhist painting and carving on them. There are more than 30 unfinished paintings of Buddha.Entrance to the caves is 5km inside the national park, the kanheri caves are located at a height so you can either take a shuttle or Treak a bit to reach the caves. The caves are carved from basalt rock and date from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri is derived from Sanskrit word Krishnagiri, which literally means black mountain. Visitors can view the magnificent relics of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas and walk along the pillared corridors of the prayer halls chiseled out in the rocky outcrop. Most of you would agree with me when I say  that Mumbai has the ingredients for a hill station as well as a tourist place. It has greenery, sea shores and urban jungle. But other than a commercial center, Mumbai is never considered as a hill station. But if you want to feel like you are in a hill station, then you must visit Kanheri Caves. I know it has been around Mumbai for a really long time, but we never bother to visit it and some of us would not have even heard of it. So if you do hear about it, then plan to visit it and make it happen. I dont have the exact knowledge of how the caves were built and when it happened, but you can get all that information from the local guides over there. The entry to the caves is ₹25 (for Indian Citizens) and ₹300(for foreign nationals). The journey from the bottom to top is a good 1 hour trek, although there are steps to make life easier. For those who are not prepared to hike or those who are lazy, the walk to the top may be a bit tiring. But once you get to the top, the view is amazing. You get a nice panoramic view of the greenery of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park which spans over a wide expanse. If it is isnt quite sunny then it is quite pleasant at the top. Weekends may be a bit crowded, but the crowd is generally concentrated at the lower levels, after that it gets filtered. Its a good half a day outing for a family and a must visit if you are a localite, because we often ignore the things that are most closer and obvious to us.
