All done by hundreds of workers working amazingly hard to keep up the pace. A lot of photogenic places around wih varieties of coloured clothes hanging and columns of water where people are seen washing clothes. Definitely a must visit! The people staying there are extremely polite and helpful. However, I went there with my friend from Switzerland and at the entry-gate we were being asked to pay an entry fees for him. That wasnt the best to witness but nonetheless, the experience there and learning about that place was amazing!

What a contrast between the luxury hotel I am in for the night and the lives of the men that do the laundry for the guests of hotels. They work so hard yet earn so little. Doubtful that the hotel pays them even half of what guests are charged. This was a very enlightening experience into the life of working class Indians
One of the most Iconic place in Mumbai. Oldest (more than 140 years) and still functional. Dhobhi ghat (Washer men place) where these people have an annual revenue turnover of around INR 100 crore (14.7 million dollars). The place is so well known and old that few of the well known movies have been shot here, to name a few, Munna Bhai MBBS and Shootout at Wadala. Place is adjustment to Mahalaxmi train station (few seconds walking distance). The place holds a world record and is equally iconic and awesome as Mumbai Dabbawaalas
Interesting space where the washer men do laundry for hotels and hospitals. Its the largest outdoor open air washing area in the world. You can watch them do their work from a little viewing platform.Train station is close by. The also listed the most important facts about this place on a sign in English.
Dhobi Ghat presents a chaotic scene. However, a closer look brings out the order in the chaos. Lines and lines of washed clothes are hung out to dry in a manner that optimizes both time and space. This is a labor-intensive process, and the washermen, also called dhobis, have a system in place that takes care of washing, sorting, and ironing. A code is written at the back of each garment that allows the correct piece of laundry to get back to its owner. This system is amazingly efficient and one of the main reasons of the ghat’s popularity.
Dhobi ghat is a blend of history and culture prevailing over 100 years. It was initially built to wash clothes of British army. Currently catering to clothes of nearby residential and commercial actives. It has 731 ghats with population of nearly 6,000 people. One should definitely give a visit to Asias biggest open laundry adjoining Mahalaxmi station.
Its largest outdoor laundry in Mumbai, its almost 140 years old, people visit there as a touristical point of view, specially people from abroad, thats look cool actually because of the colours of the cloths, all types of material of cloth and all colour present there, its easy to reach, walking distance from mahalaxmi railway station.
The best to wash your cloth
Brilliance of biggest open-air laundromat adds a breath of fresh air to the environs. Dhobi ghat dazzles due to the daily drudgery of 20 hours put in by 7000 odd washermen who whip-scrub-wash-dye-bleach-press around 100,000 clothes.Despite changeover to mechanical washing, the manual flogging is still a preferred choice and a source of living for the hard-working #dhobis in Mumbai. When you stand on the over bridge of Mahalakshmi railway station you get a clear view of the vast expanse of the colourful ghat. Shutterbugs and tourists flock here to capture the moment on their cams.

Im not sure how the Dhobi Ghats are considered a tourist attraction. I can appreciate the uniqueness of the place and what they accomplish with so little resources. But they are people, doing their laundry, and its considered a tourist attraction. It was emotionally challenging for me to witness the squalor, filth, and unhygienic conditions. I felt so much empathy for the challenges they face. I did not witness a single person smiling. They were not living, only surviving. Pictures are of the electrical room that powers the washers.
Mumbai attracts tourists in part because the slum was once used as a background for Slumdog Millionaire movie in 2008. My friend kept asking again and again that Are you sure? when I insist on going to see the place with my own eyes. The laundry village in the below for example. Im still obsessed with tiny footy alleys, running along the drainaige of a laundry detergent. On top of that, the clothesline spreads to cover the midday sun.Below is some men do washing, children play with each other while mothers iron washed clothes and saree. But they feel good about their lives and want to be respected so I was not allowed to take a close-up photo of them.

Largest slum area in Mumbai
It is a heritage site now and one of the tourist attractions in Mumbai. It is as old as Bombay is and has been serving the cleaning and laundry service industry since long. Millions of clothes and linen are washed here everyday, catering mostly to the medical institutions, hospitality and railways too. You can visit this place and take beautiful photos which earlier was restricted as the washers were not very keen to entertain photography, but now they are more welcoming.
Its Heritage place, most of the foreigners visit this place
This open air laundry is in Mumbai on the west coast of India. 4000 people are employed here but the service is decreasing as the years go by with hospitals buying commercial machines. Over 1,000 people a day are employed by the laundry from dawn to dusk in shifts manually doing the laundry of hospitality businesses in Mumbai. Viewed from street level and crammed into an area next to a busy railway line, these workers seem to perform
SEA SITE AREA GOOD FOR EVENING SUNSET
A must place to see in Mumbai
A sight worth seeing! You can view across the site for nothing from the upper road or you can pay for a guided tour through the complex itself. I recommend the tour because you learn how the whole system works and get to see how the work is done. And where the people live - just steps away from where they work each day.
Very crowded area...
My friend is coming
Very famous place of Mumbai.Once upon a time DHOBIs of Mumbai starts stay there. For them its known as Dhobi ghat. Now its a very famous place and one of the best tourist attraction of Mumbai. Actually this is the largest laundry center of Mumbai. More or less 4500 people works here. They are on demand for their services, and its increasing day by day. Very good place for photography. Good place for study about a life of a normal people, how they fight for their living, how hard-working they are and the most important is they do that hardwork only for saving their family. So its very beautiful, nostalgic in one word its an amazing place.
Very good mumbai wark
Dhobi ghat is a community of washers.Washing clothes and drying in shifts. Brought there together from everywhere in Mumbai. Day and night in all colors, fabric, and type. They do it the traditional by hand washing. Steams of soapy water flow here. With a view of different clothes everywhere. One can see a person drying 50-100 garments in one go.

Human laundry in Mumbai city center, has been in existence for decades if not more, people without literacy manage to wash millions of items every day, laundry there for private individuals and especially for large institutions like hospital factories and the like, there is a tour that can be done for a few dollars And it should be bargained for as well as anything in India, the tour is highly recommended and worth taking two hours to visit the place.
