Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan is one of the most significant historic chapters in India’s journey of the independence struggle. This is where Mahatma Gandhi commanded the British to leave India on August 8, 1942, marking the launch of the Quit India Movement. Formerly called the Gowalia Tank Maidan, the ground was later renamed as August Kranti Maidan to symbolise this historic event.

Historical place with lovely green garden
My childhood memories ground, used to have school sports here.Loved playing cricket and football here.
One of the few green spaces in the neighbourhood. Has two gardens which are parks with lawns and walking paths for walkers and joggers. One of these gardens closer to the main road side entrance has the Gandhi Memorial Column located in its center. The other garden is mainly recreational with a big lawn surrounding the central fountain and a wide square walking track along the lawn. Towards the inner entrance of the maidan is a newly renovated childrens park, behind which there is another small open playing field. Adjacent to these two is the biggest ground of Gowalia Tank open to everyone, to do anything and play any sport. Right opposite this ground is another smaller ground which shares the entrance to the Fellowship School located behind it. It has a dedicated volleyball corner which attracts some great players and a number of spectators. These two grounds are usually crowded with enthusiastic young and old cricketers, soccer lovers, volleyball players and bystanders.
A good public ground for all and even many practices are held here. Next to fellowship school at nana Chowk. With a number of vendors outside

This ground is very big grond it is mainly used for playing cricket and football we can too play other sports activites Gowalia Tank Maidan is a park in Tardeo, central Mumbai where Mahatma Gandhi issued the Quit India speech on 8 August 1942 decreeing that the British must leave India immediately or else mass agitations would take place.
August Kranti Maidan has been the place to hangout since my childhood. Lets say over 40 years, it has been my go to place.
On August 7, 1942, the All India Congress Committee organized its session under the Presidentship of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, which continued past-midnight into the next day. The venue was the Gowalia Tank Maidan, which was located 250 metres away from Goculdas Tejpal House, the place where the Indian National Congress was established in December 1885. The next day (August 8. 1942), the call for Quit India Movement was given, with the mantra of do or die.
August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai holds a very important place in the history of Indian independence struggle as it was from the spot from where Mahatma Gandhi ordered the British to leave India. The Mahatma’s command to the British on August 8, 1942, marked the launch of the Quit India movement. Earlier, known as Gowalia Tank Maidan, the ground was re-christened as August Kranti Maidan to mark the historic event. The name, August Kranti Maidan loosely translated stands for August Revolution Ground.
