We were glad to visit a monastery for a change, so far east. But we were disappointed not to visit the main church, see maybe some ancient frescoes, icons... And there is no explanation in English, nothing, not even a little sign/panel or a sheet of paper and no guide speaks English (or German, French)!

Very beautiful monastery. Faraway from Midiyat center. Possible to arrive with minibus( direction midyat-idil) and get off on the highway. Then walk approximately for 3 km.Entrance fee 10tl. A tour guide would be provided. Unfortunately not all parts of the monastery were open.

Amazing Syriac Catholic monastery founded in the year 397 and still functioning. The entrance fee is less than $2 that comes with a guided tour. I even got invited to tea with the Bishop. If this wasnt in Turkey it would be a UNESCO World Heritage site. You need to make an effort to get here but so worth your time. It is a testament to the rapid expansion of early Christianity under the Byzantine Roman Emporers. Saint Gabriel, the founder of the monastery wedged himself between two narrow walls so he could pray for days on end standing. You can see his grave. He was buried standing up. The early history of a religion (Christianity) that changed our world struggling to survive in a newer religion (Islam) that will change our world even more. Do not miss this visit!

Though we were told that there might be accommodation problem depending on when you visit from time to time so please make sure you arrange your accomodation or booked your room in advance if you dont want to have a last minute problem.

Mutlaka ziyaret edilmesi gerekli bir kompleks yapı. Durumu son derece iyi. Çok bakımlı. Rehberlik hizmetini süryani cemaatinin vermeside çok yerinde olmuş.

Avlu bizi kuş cıvıltılarıyla karşıladı. Ağaçların arasında göz kamaştıran mimarisi ve verdiği huzuru buraya aktarmakta zorlanacağım. Rehberlik hizmetini kendilerinin vermesi yerinde bir karar olmuş. Ayine denk gelmemiz ise bizim şansımızdı tam anlamıyla göremesekte dinleyebildik :)Bir kez daha uzun uzadıya ziyaret etmek isterim.
