It is one of the largest bridges in Bangladesh. It is a special project for the Bangladesh government as well as the people of Bangladesh because This bridge is a testament to how a country with limited resources can achieve its goal if there is determination. It will connect the North and South part of Bangladesh by road. It will benefit about three crore people across 21 south-western districts of Bangladesh. These districts will be connected with the growth centers through better connectivity. They can be used as economic corridors. On the other hand, students from rural areas have to come for higher studies to Dhaka. Critical patients have to be brought to big cities for treatment despite having clinics at district and sub-district levels. The bridge has a total of 41 spans. Its about 6.15 kilometers long. This bridge will be complete around 2022. The construction of the bridge will be a landmark achievement of the government.

A bridge over the mighty river, the Padma, has always been a dream project, primarily because of the vastness of the river and the prohibitive cost involved in its implementation. The project was conceived long ago, but most people considered it to be an impossible proposition as the river is turbulent and its bed in many places highly treacherous. The ball, however, started rolling in 1998-99 when the pre-feasibility study was conducted over building a bridge over the Padma. The construction of the bridge over another major river Jamuna, to some extent, provided an impetus to the efforts to make an audacious dream come true. The project, however, suffered a major jolt at the very inception when the World Bank (WB) had announced its withdrawal from the project making an unfounded allegation of corruption. The WB had pledged substantial funding for the mega project. The withdrawal was bewildering, no doubt, but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had demonstrated unusual courage and firmness when she decided to execute the project with funds from the state coffer. The Padma Bridge is estimated to increase the GDP of the country by more than one percent. It will benefit about three crore people across 21 south-western districts of Bangladesh. These districts will be connected with the growth centres through better connectivity. They can be used as economic corridors. This will create opportunities for employment and income. The transportation system will be improved as movement of people will be enhanced. Supply chains within the country will be connected better. Goods and services will move smoothly from one place to another. People from the south-western parts of the country are also expected to have better access to education, healthcare and other services.

A two storied multipurpose, four-lane road cum single-track rail bridge of 6.15 km long, with separate rail and road viaducts in both ends, having an approach road of 13.6 km is being constructed over river Padma to connect southwestern part of the country with the capital Dhaka. Once completed, it will be the longest bridge in south Asia. Feasibility Study estimated that it would boost countrys Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 1.2%. l;he study is conducted to assess the adequacy of the structure using an independent computer aided simulation regarding load requirement, design criteria, and compare with ultimate load capacity. To calculate independent pile capacity, proposed design parameters and criteria mentioned in detail design were considered. In addition, ultimate capacities of piles were estimated by considering recommended geotechnical parameters mentioned in Geotechnical Assessment-Final Report . Later, a group analysis using Geocentrix Repute was performed to develop a better model of the static soil structure interactions and compared with software package PIGLET that was adopted in detailed design. Arbitrarily selected five piers along the main river crossing were selected- two from Mawa side, two from Janjira side and one from mid-river, and analyzed to check the competency of pile foundation under adapted load cases in detailed design. To ascertain the effectiveness of superstructure, an individual computer aided analysis was carried out using MIDAS Civil. This software package was also adopted in detailed design to develop superstructure scheme. An arbitrarily selected module of from middle portion of the bridge was modeled to analysis superstructure. To determine behaviors of structures under various load effects, the proposed design criteria mentioned in detailed design were considered. The result and analysis of this study suggest that substructure design of Padma Bridge appears to be conservative to a higher degree. Considering ultimate capacity F.O.S. (capacity to load ratio) varied approximately within 1.56 and 3.57 for different load cases.@mohammadjobaeruddin

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) invited the pre-qualification tender for the project in April 2010. Construction of the bridge was expected to commence by early 2011[8] and be ready for major completion in 2013 (and complete all sections by late 2015[9]).After allegation of corruption by some people associated with project preparation the World Bank withdrew its commitment and other donors followed. The Government of Bangladesh then decided to fund the project from its own fund.[5]China proposed building the bridge on the build-own-transfer (BOT) basis by investing $2 billion or 70 percent of the project cost. Four companies—China Major Bridge Engineering Company, Daelim-L&T JV and Samsung C&T Corporation—purchased the tender papers. But only the Chinese company submitted their financial proposal on 24 April 2014.On 17 June 2014, important progress had been made in the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge. A construction firm, China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd, has been selected to construct the long aspired bridge on the river Padma. The 6.15 km bridge, costing an estimated ৳91.72 billion (US$1.1 billion).Overview of Padma Multipurpose Bridge ProjectDesign Team :- The detailed design of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is being delivered by a team of international and national consultants headed by AECOM.[10] The team comprises AECOM, SMEC International, Northwest Hydraulic Consultants[11] and ACE Consultants, with additional assistance from Aas-Jakobsen and HR Wallingford. The Project comprises two phases. Phase 1 of the Project includes the Design Phase leading through procurement action to the award of construction contracts. Phase 2 is the Construction Phase. Phase 1 of the project commenced on 29 January 2009. A dedicated Project Office was set up in Dhaka in March 2009. Detailed design of the main bridge was carried out in AECOMs Hong Kong office. All work carried out by the design team was carried out within the framework of AECOMs Quality Management System (QMS) which is independently accredited to AS/NZS ISO 9001. The QMS is designed to control all project work undertaken by the team. A project-specific Design Management Plan was established at the outset of the project, In March 2009, the Government of Bangladesh requested AECOM to accelerate the design with a view to ensuring construction could be completed before the end of 2013. This necessitated the mobilization of additional personnel within the design team. Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) established an internationally recognized Panel of Experts comprising five national and five international experts to review the design at regular intervals. In addition, an Independent Checking Engineer, Flint & Neill, was engaged to review the design criteria, specification and drawings produced by the design team to ensure the design meets the project requirements and to undertake an independent check of the detailed design of the main bridge and river training works. A key feature of the detailed design was the integration of Bangladesh counterparts into the design team, which allowed the successful training of a significant number of Bangladesh personnel in all aspects of the project and the subsequent transfer of the high level of technology involved in this large and complex project.[12]

The Padma multi-purpose bridge in Bangladesh is located about 40km southwest of the capital Dhaka, across the Padma River (the Ganges), and a straight line distance of about 150km from the mouth of the Indian Ocean. After completion, it will become the main traffic artery connecting Mawa and Janjira. The project is contracted by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group. The project includes the construction of the main bridge of the bridge, highway approach bridges and some railway approach bridges. The total length of the project is about 7.7 kilometers. It mainly includes: the main bridge with a total length of 6,150 meters across the Padma River and the double-layer steel truss concrete composite beam main bridge, and the approach bridge with a total length of 3679 meters on both sides. The project was designed by the American AECOM company. Many new technologies were used in the design and construction of the bridge. These technologies are the first applications in the world, and have high requirements for safety, environmental protection and occupational health by international standard.Since the start of construction of the project, it has solved the employment problem of surplus labor in the surrounding area to a large extent, and promoted the local economic development. After the completion of the project, Bangladesh’s north-south highways and railways will be connected and a new transportation artery will be formed, which is conducive to the transmission of north-south power and the development and utilization of tourism resources. Furthermore, it will end the history of the local people relying on ferry transportation for thousands of years with a dramatic improvement of the transportation efficiency of north-south flow of people and logistics. According to preliminary estimates, it will bring about 1.2% growth in Bangladeshs GDP every year.

The two-level steel truss bridge carries a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single track railway on a lower level.[4] The bridge with 150.12 m (492.5 ft) long 41 spans, 6.150 km (3.821 mi) total length[3] and 22.5 m (74 ft) width,[5] is the longest bridge in Bangladesh, and the longest over Ganges in terms of both span and the total length.[6] The highest depth of pile of this bridge is 122 metre, which is highest among all other bridges.[7] Padma Multipurpose Bridge, when commissioned, is expected to boost the GDP of Bangladesh by as much as 1.2 percent.[
